McLaren MP4/4

Post by JonMW »

So finally got this one done. It started out as a Tamiya MP4/4 from the beginning of the 1988 season. As I wanted to build it as the car Senna used in the Japanese GP where he took the title I used Model Factory Hiro's conversion kit. This replaced all kit parts except for the body, floor, wheels, tires, mirrors and rain light. To add a few more details to it I used Top Studio's drive shaft kit, cockpit kit and antennas, as well as some generic resin connectors and wires. The decals came mostly from a Museum Collection sheet with a few extra taken from the MFH one for special Japanese GP ones, carbon decals where added from Studio 27 and Scale Motorsports.

There where a few problems with the fit of some of the engine parts that I didn't expect from a MFH kit, they usually make really nice well fitting kits. But I guess it's because it's so many small parts in a really tight space. This led to another problem, the body don't fit perfectly on the chassis. It's hitting something but I'm not sure what, I might be able to just push it in place but as it will be displayed without the body anyway it's not that big of a problem.

The main body colors are Zero Paints Brilliant White and MP4 red. The red is a really good match for the color used by McLaren from 1976 to 1996 but a bit hard to paint and to photograph. This was then covered with a few coats of Zero Paints 2-pack clear.
