1/48 Eduard Hellcat MkII

Post by JonMW »

Thought I would do another Hellcat for this GB, this time using the really nice 1/48 Eduard kit. The kit comes with PE and resin wheels.

Image

Image

Started building the cockpit. The molded in detail that will be replaced with PE was removed using a chisel and then sanded smooth. All the parts where primered in Ultimate black.

Image

I then painted the cockpit in aluminium, followed by a couple of coats of chipping fluid.

Image

The cockpit was painted green and then using a damp brush some of the paint where chipped off.

Image

Finally I started to add all the PE.

Image

I also managed to make a small mistake by throwing a cellulose thinner soaked piece of paper on the fuselage. Of coarse the kitchen roll melted into the plastic and removing panel lines and rivet details.

Image

So instead of sanding it down and adding all the details I decided to cut the rear part off the second fuselage to use as a plug to cast a new rear part in resin. I used an oil based clay to cover the inside of the part, placed it in a box of Lego and poured in some silicone.

Image

Image

Image

When the silicone had set I flipped it over, removed the clay, added a coat of clear and poured the second half of the mold.
Image

Image

Then it was just a matter of casting a new rear. The new part is one section longer then it needs to be so I could cut it off and make sure the joint was straight and with out any gaps. I added a sheet of plastic to the inside of the fuselage to strengthen the joint.

Work on this have been really slow, due to trying to get a lot of other projects done. But now it's time to get something done. Finished the cockpit by adding PE seat belts and the PE on the inside of the fuselage. Finally adding a dark brown oil wash to the whole cockpit. Got the fuselage it needed a bit of filler, probably more then it should due to my resin rear half not being perfect. There is still a little bit of sanding left and then start the rescribing.

My sentiments exactly. Cockpit looks awesome but the repair on the tail made my eyes pop. Great stuff.
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Thanks!

I've made some more progress on the Hellcat. Got it painted using Tamiya XF-24, XF-62 and Mr Hobby H74, then clear coated it using Aqua Gloss and applied the decals.

Image

Image

I then applied a second coat of Aqua Gloss, now I had some reaction with the gloss coat and the Micro Set or Sol. The gloss coat went flat around the decals.

Image

So I lightly sanded the decals using the Ultimate polisher and applied a new coat of clear, this time using X-22 and leveling thinner.

Image

Just waiting for the clear to dry and then it's time for a Dark Dirt wash.

Nice work... that repairjob... amazing!: :

I remember that I've seen the same problem with Micro decal setting solution and Aqua Gloss too. I'm pretty sure it's the Micro Sol that causes this and I have started to clean the decals (and the area around it) with distilled water and a cotton bud after the decals have dried, before I put on the Aqua Gloss.

Great job sofar, keep it up!

We can't get too many hellcats :)

I am really good at the screw up/destroying parts, not so hot at the repair or in your case REMake. Holy $¥!+
If I may ask what green are you using for the internals?

Yes you may ask, now if I actually remember is a different thing. I think it's probably Vallejo Model Air 71.094

Final update on this, have been doing a little bit of weathering. Started with an oil dot filter, using blue, yellow and light grey.

Image

I then added some small chipping using a fine brush and sponge with Humbrol silver.

Image

Image

Image

I thought the paint was a bit too uniform and the grey a bit too dark. So I mixed about 4 ml of Tamiya X-35 semi gloss clear and 5 drops of XF-55 deck tan and used it to lighten the center of some of the panels.

I should really get on with my master plan to win the lottery and just build kits 24/7 so I can get this good.
