I used to sell paint for living. Aluminum is a different animal than other metals. The Klear acrylic or even an oil base may not stick to aluminum. It probably need a waterbourne bonding primer or an etch primer. The problem is I don't know of any that are clear. If the dull coat does not work try Dupli-Color Adhesion Promoter. This is an adhesion primer for automotive surfaces. I use it as a clear primer for my models and it has worked on photo etched parts as well, brass and aluminum accept paint in roughly the same way. Just remember it's not the end of the world, it's just an inconvenience. :th: I hope it turns out OK and and hope I was able to help.
Mike's advice sounds good mate. The other alternative may be decaling the stripes, it's already a gloss surface. Any in the kit? There may be an aftermarket set about or could be a case of custom printing.

Either way, good luck Bud, you'll sort it.

:cheers2:

Ok. Just read back through- You've got the under fuselage stripes, if they work you just need the wings.
I've got some for the wings the only problem is they are tamiya's I to be honest I DONT trust them lol

AWWW CRAP!
I saw the shots and it looked like it was the foil coming up!!! :eeek: :eeek: :eeek:
I damn near died.
The paint you can work around. There has to be a way for paint on foil... I have books on this. I'll look it up. :thumb1:

Right guys after trying matt varnish which didn't work I tried just straight paint and to be carful and here are the results.
To make sure the foil didn't pull of I got rid of the stickyness by tapeing it to my hand and removing it a few times.
Image
I was going to use post-it-notes but the were too low tack.
Image
This is it half masked
Image
Image
And here we are with the masks off
Image
Still pulled in a few places
Image
Image
Image
And from the other side.
Image

So that's where I'm at I'm going to leave it as is for the mo as I'm working in Portsmouth next week so I'll take another look at it when I get back if I think I can touch it up I'll leave it if not I'll remove it again and try something else.

Again thanks for the encouragement guys.

Now, I'm not a squeamish bloke, but I winced and had to look away at the first set of photos - all your hard work! :eeek:

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but I'm really hoping that the paint takes and it's a matter of touching it up, you deserve a break after all the time and effort you've put in - either way, it looks like an absolute winner to me just as it is!! :th: :th: :cheers2:

Right guys I need your help the paint hasn't taken again I want to give it one more try then it will I'll try the decals the invasion stripes are tamiyas so I'm not sure how good they will be.

I thinking of trying humbrol enamel as it's slower drying and drys harder it SHOULD stop rubbing of and I was wondering what you guys thought I've got next week to get the stripes done then I'm on holiday and will then only have a month to sort so any help or advise would be great.

Thanks

I don't know about enamels- could be hard to remove if it goes wrong. What about something like an Alclad primer?

Just an idea mate.

Good luck.

Thanks for the idea mate but I'm not that happy about using Alclad with little ones around a know enamel is not that good but it's a safer bet that Alclad.

I'm not a paint expert but spent time working in the automotive industry and i know they used self eching primers to paint aluminum. I think you can find some in auto parts stores in rattle cans but im not sure its safe to spray indoors...keep at it this is an amazing build so far.....you will sort it out just a small set back

Hopefully I've sorted it the car needed a new down pipe and cat convertor (£200) and while at the garage i saw this.

I've tested it on some scrap card with foil on and it seams to be ok I'll up date the thread when I try paint on it.

So I got the stripes and anti-glare all squared away.

So now I can get on with the rest of the build so next will be a gloss coat. So onwards and upwards

Well as it stands it had two gloss coats and ill be tackling some of the detailed painting and then the decals so not much more to do hopefully.

Right guys last update before I go on holiday.

And it out with the decals.
Image

And there she is
Image

I've only done the major ones tonight but you get the idea.
The went on like a dream well except for the nose band but I got it on near enough straight I was going to try and paint it but with the paint being delicate I decided to use the decal.
Image

Well that's it for now I'll do all the smaller ones on my return

Right guys sorry it's been a couple of weeks but I'm back to this now.

Tonight's update I deal with the canopy. Reason I've left it to now is I didn't know how I was going to tackle it with foil or paint but I thought I got this far so I'll try it with foil and if it didn't work I can always paint it.

So to start I had to mask the canopy
Image
Using on straight edge I line the masking tape up

Image
Then with a cocktail stick it get burnished down.

Image
And with a new blade

Image
I cut along the edges

Once it all masked I dipped a cocktail stick in the metal glue
Image

And spread the glue round where it's needed the tape will stop it going on to the glass where it's not needed
Image

The foil then goes over this and again it burnished down
Image

And again it's cut with a sharpe knife.
Image

So when finished your left with a canopy with metal supports
Image

Image
And with the canopy put in place not glued I might add. I also finished the decaling tonight

Image

Next will be a gloss coat or two then. Then I'll do some detail painting.

Again as always thanks for looking.

Lovely stuff, Nige. She looks the business! :th:
Perfect timing for me as I'm about to mask the canopies for my build and picked up a couple of tips from your post. :cheers2:

WOW, what an amazing build and very inspiring
May I ask the foil material source and details
I found the cement source, but no details on a source for the foil and its thickness??!!
Thanks, Scott

Hi Scott thanks for the comment. The foil is just normal kitchen foil from the supermarket the cheaper the better as it thinner. You can get special foil simply called bare metal foil which has glue already apply and you just cut and stick it BUT it can be expensive and if it goes wrong there is not much you can do where has my method you can peel it off and with water or IPA to clean it off and start again. Hope that helps mate.

Great info, thanks for that.
I found a good PDF resource on doing this but it used the self adhesive version and I figured it would be easier to bugger up.
Again great build and techniques, I am so impressed with the skills demonstrated on ISM :th:
I am partial to Mustangs, that was my car in my avatar in front of my driveway.

Hi guys back with an update sort of lol

Well I thought my build needed something extra so I thought I'd make a base for them starting with the mustang

I want to do a hard standing that would fit in with my WWII build and the more modern jets I'm doing at the mo.
So I opted to go with concrete slabs and these is how I started to get the effect I wanted (please bear in mind it's the 1st time I've tried this lol)
Image
A bit of card some sandpaper different grades and some PVA glue.

I taped the edges with masking tape so it's double thickness

The sand paper was devided into 5cm squres

Then cut up and placed on the card to see what it may look like

The glued with PVA

To make it more realistic I tore one or two to make it look as if the slabs had cracks

And after some weight on the base to keep the sandpaper flat here is were I'm at.

Once it's dry I'll trim and prime it and start painting and weathering it. Hopefully it will look ok.

Again as always thanks for looking.
