Hey guy's

Here is my entry for this group build.
It is the P-51D by Zoukei Mura in 1/32 scale.
Since everyone is building the Tamiya version, i decided to take a different approach.

Very crisp parts with excellent details.
Panel lines are brilliant.
The manual is really nice, with some excellent reference shots of what the steps should look like.

Some info about the North American P-51D Mustang:

The Mustang was among the best and most well-known fighters used by the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. Possessing excellent range and maneuverability, the P-51 operated primarily as a long-range escort fighter and also as a ground attack fighter-bomber. The Mustang served in nearly every combat zone during WWII, and later fought in the Korean War.

Origins:

In 1940 the British approached North American Aviation to license-build Curtiss P-40 fighters for the Royal Air Force. North American offered to design a better fighter, which flew as the NA-73X in October 1940. Production of the aircraft -- named Mustang I by the British -- began the following year.

Mustangs for the USAAF

In the summer of 1941, the USAAF received two Mustang Is under the designation XP-51. Although flight tests of the new fighter showed promise, the USAAF did not immediately order the Mustang. After the personal intervention of Gen. Hap Arnold, however, the USAAF retained 55 Mustangs from a British order. Most of these became F-6A photo-reconnaissance aircraft, which equipped the first USAAF Mustang units, the 154th and 111th Observation Squadrons in North Africa in the spring of 1943.

In March 1942 the USAAF accepted the first production P-51A fighters. Although excellent at lower levels, the P-51A's Allison engines severely limited performance at high altitude. The USAAF employed P-51As in the China-Burma-India theater, where most combat took place at low altitude.

In April 1942 the USAAF ordered an attack version equipped with dive brakes and bomb racks, the A-36 Apache. A-36s entered combat in June 1943 and served in North Africa, Italy and India.

A Winning Combination:

In the fall of 1942, Mustangs in the United States and Great Britain were experimentally fitted with British Merlin engines. One in the United States flew a remarkable 441 mph at 29,800 feet -- about 100 mph faster than the P-51A at that altitude. Mass production of the Merlin-powered P-51B and P-51C soon followed (nearly identical, North American produced the "B" in Inglewood, Calif., and the "C" in Dallas, Texas).

In December 1943 the first P-51B/C Mustangs entered combat in Europe with the 354th Fighter Group "Pioneers." By the time of the first U.S. heavy bomber strike against Berlin in March 1944, the USAAF fielded about 175 P-51B/C Mustangs. Along with P-38 Lightnings, these P-51s provided sorely needed long-range, high-altitude escort for the U.S. bombing campaign against Germany.

"Bubble-top" Mustang
The P-51D incorporated several improvements, and it became the most numerous variant with nearly 8,000 being built. The most obvious change was a new "bubble-top" canopy that greatly improved the pilot's vision. The P-51D also received the new K-14 gunsight, an increase from four to six .50-cal machine guns, and a simplified ammunition feed system that considerably reduced gun jams.

The P-51D arrived in quantity in Europe in the spring of 1944, becoming the USAAF's primary long range escort fighter. The versatile Mustang also served as a fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. Few Luftwaffe aircraft could match the P-51D -- by the end of the war, Mustangs had destroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft in the air, more than any other USAAF fighter in Europe.

P-51Ds arrived in the Pacific and CBI theaters by the end of 1944. In the spring of 1945, Iwo Jima-based P-51Ds started flying long-range B-29 escort and low-level fighter-bomber missions against ground targets in Japan.

Continuing Development:

North American eventually developed a considerably lightened Mustang, which became the P-51H. With a remarkable top speed of 487 mph, it was 50 mph faster than the P-51D. Although it was in production before the war ended, the P-51H did not reach frontline units in time to see combat.

With the last of 555 P-51Hs completed in 1946, the production run of the Mustang ended with over 15,000 of all types built.

Cruising speed: 275 mph
Range: 1,000 miles
Ceiling: 41,900 ft.
Span: 37 ft.
Length: 32 ft. 3 in.
Height: 13 ft. 8 in.
Weight: 12,100 lbs. maximum

The version i am going to build:

This plane was flown by Capt Fred A Munder in the summer of 1944.
Captain Munder was flying in the 381st Fighter Squadron, 363rd Fighter Group.

The 363d Training Group has its origins as the 363d Fighter Group, being activated on 1 August 1943 at Hamilton AAFld, California. The original fighter squadrons (380th, 381st, 382d) trained with Bell P-39 Airacobras at Hamilton and other airfields in California and served as part of the air defense force.
The group moved to England in December 1943 for duty with the Ninth Air Force. At RAF Keevil, the group was re-equipped with North American P-51 Mustang in January 1944 and entered combat in February. Squadron designations were changed to 160th (A9), 161st (B3) and 162d (C3) Fighter Squadrons and assigned Fuselage Codes. The group escorted bombers and fighter-bombers to targets in France, Germany, and the Low Countries; strafed and dive-bombed trains, marshalling yards, bridges, vehicles, airfields, troops, gun positions, and other targets on the Continent.
The 363d supported the D-Day invasion of Normandy in June 1944 by escorting troop carriers and gliders and by attacking enemy positions near the front lines, and moved to the Continent at the end of June to take part in the Allied drive to the German border.
In the two weeks following D-Day, the 363d experienced the most fruitful period of its service in the European Theater of Operations when patrols over France brought it actions with a total of 19 confirmed victories. However, a similar number of Mustangs were lost, albeit mostly to ground fire.
During operations from England, the group was credited with 41 victories but lost 43 of its own aircraft in the process.

Captain Fred A Munder has flown 82 missions, but did not score any kind of kills.

Doing the engine right now.. And when i put the sump on the 2 crankcase parts i glued together, it sounded: CLICK

Now that's a sound we all love.

Great entry with a seems to great kit , I recently saw the Zoukei Mura site and all the models and complements to them (figures , PE's , resin parts are simply to be :drool:

I but a carrier base for my Tamiya Corsair and some US Pilot figures and they are so great !

Wish you a nice build and congratulations for this choice , very nice

Well, we arrived at step one.

The crankcase and cylinder liners assembly.
All went together ok, but you have to make sure everything is lined up correctly for the intake manifold.
The prop gearbox is also fitted with a free to spin prop axle.

Making it come together:

The crankcase is made up of 2 halves and a sump.
The liners are eache 2 parts with a seperate came cover.

Here we have the complete engine block:

Now it's on to the watercooling assets and the ignition harness which need to be sprayed in aluminium.

Beginning with the fiddly stuff on the engine..
These water and fuel lines are really fragile.
When the glue is dry, i will sand that thingy off it.
The supercharger is also done.
It is build up out of 13 parts... :eeek:
Don't mind the dust, did some sanding and it shows on the picture. (Not to see with the naked eye)

It is an awesome kit.
Allthough next time, i would pick the Tamiya.
This kit is really overengineerd.
For instance the supercharger is made up out of 13..!! parts..
That's just.. insane.
Tamiya has gear bay's and gun bay's
This one has those, and even the tanks in the wings..
It has the complete plumming for the oil and water radiators in the belly. It has ignition harnesses, oil pipes, fuel lines, etc etc..
It even has wiring harnesses for the instrument panel and all that.
Ultra realistic. but you'll never ever see it once build.
Shame actually.
(Sure you can build her as a frame without the skin, but i don't like the looks of that)

So bottom end is:
Want a 1/32 Mustang that will snap together like a dream without too much crazyness? Get the Tamiya..

I know that some brands like to over do it at times
Bronco does it too on some kits like the sws
You have to look twice before even glueing some parts
but i do armor most of the times so i don't think i will get a big tamiya mustang
i like the looks of it but it not really my thing to build
and my skills with painting and weathering aircraft is not so good so i wouldn't do such a kit much justice and that would be a shame
i already have some expensive kits that i build before and now start thinking of repainting them and make them look good
but keep up the good work

Thanks.

I always build my kits back in the days as the came.
No filling, no weathering, nothing.
Just glue, paint, decal and done.
This is basicly the first plane on which i will spray the outide completely in alclad..
I will try to do some weathering (Not to much though, the plane was in a quite good condition without too many flying hours)
We'll see what comes out :P

Did some minor work today.
Still waiting for paints and stuff to be delivered.
Also ordered another tip for the H&S, Should make cleaning 10 times less time consuming.

The engine and tank are in a flat black first coat.
The engine will now be sprayed in gun metal varias details will be picked out in brass and aluminium.
The cockpit will get all the detail picked out.
The cockpit floor will be painted in wood, after which it gets a gun metal finish and hopefully some nice weathering detail.
The floor behind the cockpit, and all the parts for the tank and bulkheads will get a finish in Tamiya's XF4
The seat will get a brown leather cushion with nice seatbelts.

Well. All the paint from the floor and bulkheads is stripped off in oven cleaner. The primer didn't work and peeled. (Damn you vallejo..!! )
So I can start over again.
I will take a couple days of rest first though.

Dude that is a real bummer
But if i may put in a suggestion : go for ak primer it is a bit more expensive as it comes in a smaller bottle but it is so much better to use
But the best is to step away for a few days indeed before you want to make it fly for real

Sorry to here about the paint troubles buddy.
Could it be you forgot to clean the plastic before painting? Can be really greasy some times.

Anyway, great save :clap: . Looking nice now.

What have we done today.

Well, I just finished masking the front bulkhead + oiltank on the Mustang to paint 2 straps in aluminium..
Took me almost 45 minutes..

Build the wing spars and the 2 wing tanks and filled the seams.

Also masked the cockpit floor. so that can be painted in wood color,
Then i have to do the woodvains in a darker shade..
Then give it a clear orange layer so it looks like varnished wood..
And then i can begin the preperation for the wearing..
Also build the oil and water radiators, sanded all the cutting spots and filler down.
And now everything is ready for either primer or paint.

I have found using a toothpick - or cocktail stick - for the fine details works better than a brush. You can sharpen the ends sanding them to a needle point. I use them more than brushes for the fine stuff. Just a thought.

Good one about the toothpick.

Last couple of weeks i barely did anything due to lack of interest, good weather, 24h or lemans, etc.
Yesterday did a couple of things.
Now i have to wait for the micro sol & set i forgot to order to finish the cockpit.

Started with the cockpit floor.
Gave it a spray of Tamiya wooden deck tan, mixed with vallejo mahogany.
Once dry, finished with Vallejo transparent orange.

I then masked up the front, to spray the rear in interior green.
Also did some detailing on the cockpit sides and bulkhead (Which now has the straps in alclad)

The fuel tanks have there black coat and now need detailing.
Finished the engine carriers in aclad for their base and covered them with tamiya XF4. (XF4 not on pic yet due to battery being drained)
The radiator mount is also done in alclad, and the radiators are gunmetal.

To the Modeller that is building the P-51 Mustang Skyczar:

My name is Terry Munder. I am one of three children of Capt. Fred Munder, pilot of the P-51 Skyczar. My older brother, (who was also a USAF fighter pilot), recently discovered the interest in our Dad's aircraft. We have been searching the internet and found a lot of history regarding the Skyczar, including a picture of it with Dad sitting on the wing., My brother discovered that he has the original photograph and a lot of other photos of Dad and his various aircraft. Just to add a little history, Dad was a career Air Force officer, attaining the rank of Colonel, retiring from active service in the late 1950's. His flying career spanned rotary aircraft like the P-51 and jet aircraft like the F-84 and F-89. Dad rarely discussed his flying exploits, but I believe my brother retained his flight log, some military papers and numerous pictures.

I am not a "modeller", and if fact, I'm not even sure how to spell it, but I would be interested in seeing a photo of your completed P-51 model. You can contact me directly at [email protected]

Terry - I think most of us would enjoy the real history of this bird. What a wonderful chance to combine scale modeling with the real thing!

Never thought i would see a reply like that.

Finally some work on the Mustang again.. Next up is the instrument panel and cockpit decals.
Gave everything a wash and clean.
Think the wood came out very nice.
Little wear, not to much (Plane wasn't that old)
