AMT 1/25 '57 Chevy Bel Air Street Machine

Post by JonMW »

So as if I didn't have enough projects I thought it was time to start another one. This is AMT's "new" tooling (1998, the old one is from the 60s) of the '57 Chevy Bel Air. AMT released two versions of this kit, one stock and this Street Machine version. The difference is quite big between the versions, different engines, frames, rear suspension and floors at least there might be more. I think this is one of AMT's best kits, there is some nice crisp details, it builds up nice and there are some nice extras in the box. The biggest downfall of the kit is the wheels that looks really bad, way too small for being modern wheels, the size might have been good if it was some nice classic street wheels and tires. Also the steering wheel and brake discs are not the best but usable and the trunk lid is a bit too thick but the is easy to fix with some sanding. Enough of this and on to some pictures.

The body, nice and straight, there are some light sink marks that needs some filler.

Image
Will need to strip the chrome, it's not too bad but the bumpers has some big seam line that needs to be removed.

Image
The glass is ok, but there is some small scratches that needs to be polished. I might end up vacuum mouling new ones,I think that will look a lot better.

Image
Decals, tires, rear lights and the extras, some chrome foil for the body and spark plug wire.

Image
Some parts that I had in the parts box. The rear tires are from a Revell 41 Willys Street Rod, the front ones, the rims and the valve covers are from a Revell 71 Stars and Stripes Corvette and I have no idea where the hood scoop is from. I might try to find some other exhaust headers as well.

Image
Did a quick mock up of the body and wheels, I'm not sure if I will use the hood scoop or not.

Oh man is this gonna be a great build! I wasn't really feelin the box picture but with those fat rear tires and those wheels it's gonna look mean! I think you should definitely use the hood scoop. :th:

A bit of background info.

The '57 Bel Air was the last of the "Tri-Five" chevys. The Tri-Five name has been given to the 1955-1957 Bel Air model and lower models based on the same chassis. It was a important step for the american cars at the time. It was the first car from Chevrolet to a over head valve V8 engine as standard. The engine was a high compression short stroke 265 cid design using a two-barrel carburetor giving the engine a power of 162hp, there was also a "power pack" option that had a four-barrel carburetor with 180hp.

Image
The Tri-Five chevys

The '57 Model

The last of the Tri-Five Chevrolets introduced several changes, including the large tailfins, "twin rocket" hood design, even more chrome, tri-color paint and a choice from no less than seven different V8 engines. While in 1957, Ford outsold Chevrolet for the first time in a great while, years later the used 1957 Chevrolets would sell for hundreds more than their Ford counterparts. As the horsepower race continued, Chevrolet introduced a new version of their small block, with 283 cubic inches of displacement and 245 horsepower. They also introduced a limited number of Rochester fuel injected 283 engines that produced 283 horsepower, the first production engine to achieve 1 horsepower per cubic inch. For all intent and purposes, this made the 1957 Bel Air a "hot rod", right off the production line. It was available with manual transmission only. The base 265cid engine saw an increase from 170 to 185 horsepower as well. While not as popular as the previous year's offering, Chevrolet still managed to sell 1.5 million cars in 1957. Even now, the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air is one of the most sought after collector cars ever produced.

The kit and my plans

As this model is of a street machine version of the Bel Air it has a big block chevy that is bigger then 454 cid. It has a four link rear suspension and a racing fuel cell in the trunk. My plan is to change from the modern Corvette wheels included in the kit to some more classic looking american racing wheels and Mickey Thompson tires for the rear. I will also change some other parts like the valve covers for a bit more classic look and I need to dig though my parts box and see if I can find some more classic racing parts that I can use.

Image
Sort of the look I'm going for, except I will use the stock interior and a more stock looking color.

So first bit of progress on the '57. I started out with the engine.

Image
All the parts for the engine assembly, I stripped the chrome from the air cleaner with some oven cleaner.

Image
The chrome valve covers that came with the kit will be replaced with a pair of Moroso covers that was also stripped of the chrome.

Image

Image
Quick mock up to check the fit of all the parts. I had to cut the locating tab for the starter motor off as it placed the starter motor to low on the engine block.

Image
And everything painted, the engine block was painted in Testor Chevy engine red and the gearbox in Tamiya X-11.

Image
The valve covers where given a coat of Alclad pale gold, the intake manifold in dull aluminium and the carburetor in a mix of the two.

Still need to add wash of MIG oil and grease stain mix and a light dry brushing just to add some depth to the engine. And then it's just the wires left.

A bit more work has been done, the engine is almost done just need to add the remaining plug wires, throttle linkage and alternator wiring.

Image

The engine was given a wash using the Mig oil and grease stain mix and Ultimate light dirt and the gearbox a wash with the Ultimate dark dirt.

Image

For the alternator bracket I used a bit of 0.5mm solder

Image

Bend it to shape as seen from the front of the engine and flatten it using a pair of pliers with smooth jaws

Image

And cut to length and bend to shape so it fits on the head and alternator, for the final touch I also added some photo etch bolt heads.

Thanks!

Finally an update on this. Took a bit of a brake from this to finish my 100 years of bomber build, so now I can get back to this. The frame is pretty much done, the frame is painted in Alclad black base and most of the other parts in various shades of Alcald.

Image

The rear suspension was painted in Alclad chrome and then hand painted in Tamiya clear blue, clear red and clear yellow.

Image

Also finished the engine using some crank case breathers from Mr Model.

Image

I have also started on the interior. The floor was painted in red as this will be the main interior color. To add a bit more to the floor I added some flocking.

Image

The first thing was to apply pva glue to a section of the floor.

[URL=http://s272.photobucket.com/user/jonwah ... 0.jpg.html
Image[/URL]

Next the flocking was spread over the area and pressed into the glue. The flocking I used is from Model Car Garage, there are other brands as well and they work in the same way.

Image

I added two layers of flocking as the first was a bit uneven.

If it's the AMT batmobile is it a nice kit? My local store has about 10 of them in stock but not sure whether to pick one up or not

Thanks for the comments!

Time for a small update, the interior is almost done.

I started on the sides of the front seat that needed covering in Bare Metal Foil.

Image
The part in question.

Image
BMF chrome

Image
Started by cutting a piece a bit larger then the part to be covered using a brand new #11 blade. If it's not a brand new blade it might rip the foil. I usually don't use the 5 mm at the edge of the sheet as the glue is not really good at the edge.

Image
Put the foil on the part.

Image
And using a q-tip to conform the foil. The bmf is really good at stretching and conforming over complex surfaces.

Image
The excess where cut off.

Image
The door panels where painted the same red as the floor, black and clear coat for the trunk area and then brush painted flat black for the inserts on the door. After this it was given the same BMF treatment as the seat parts.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image
The trunk has a fuel cell in the kit that was used, I added some scrap PE parts as hold down straps for the fuel cell. The NO2 bottle is from Mr Model and to finish everything off I added some AN fittings and AN lines.

Image

Image
The interior as it stands now, just missing the dash board and the other door panel.

Thanks!

Time for a big update, this will most likely also be the last update before the final reveal. The body has been painted, cleared and polished to a decent finish. I started by putting some Vallejo primer on and sanded it smooth using Micro-mesh 2400 grit cloth. For base coat I used Zero Paints black in a mist coat followed by a covering coat. this was then sanded smooth and a third coat was put down which was polished using Micro-mesh 3600 grit.

Image

For clear I used Zero Paints 2k clear. when it comes to getting a hard, gloss clear coat, 2k clear is the best. The bad thing about it is it's not too good to breath and you need a spray booth and a mask. The really god thing is that it hardens to a really solid hard surface that can be polished. The instructions call for 2 part clear 1 part hardener and 10-30% thinner, I usually use about 20% for the first coats.

Image

I used my old trusty H&S Focus with a 0.4mm needle for the clear.

Image

I started with a really thin misty coat

Image

After waiting about 15 min a second light coat was put on. This ended up a bit to heavy, it shouldn't have been this glossy.

Image

This was then left to dry for another 15-20 minutes. The reason for this is to let the first and second coats have some time to become tacky as this will help so that the last heavy coat won't run. For the last coat I mixed a new batch of clear adding a bit more thinner (about 2 part clear, 1 part hardener and 1 part thinner) to make the final coat go on smoother.

Image

After letting the clear harden for a few days it was time for some polishing, I used the Micro-mesh set using the 3200 to 12000 grit cloths and Zero paints polishing compounds.

Image

This is the right ride before any polishing, it's pretty smooth but there are some dust particles in it that needs to be removed.

Image

After wet sanding w using the 3200 cloth, this was only used lightly to remove the dust.

Image

And after the 12000 grit

Image

And after the first of the polishing compounds.

Image

This is what it ended up looking line after all three compunds

Image

To remove what was left of the compound in the panel lines i sharpened a cocktail stick to a flat thin flat end and ran it down the panel lines.

Image

Image

I found that there was a problem with fitting the interior in the body with the windows in place. So I had to cut off the lower edge of the windows, this will not be seen when the car is done.

Image

And the finished interior, I added a PE steering wheel from Model car garage. The instruments where dry brushed in white and then a drop of 5 min epoxy was added to simulate the glass.

Image

Image

Image

This is what it looks like now, just need to add all the chrome bits and add some wires in the engine bay.
