SLT50-3 ''ELEFANT'' Tank Transporter. Revell 1/72
SLT50-3 ''ELEFANT'' Tank Transporter. Revell 1/72
I thought i would do something more modern for a change, so this is my entry into this SIG.
First a little history.
To replace the first generation tank transporter then in use, as well as to be able to haul the armoured vehicles then in service (among them the Leopard 1 Main Battle Tank), the German Army asked Faun GmbH to develop a new all-terrain heavy tractor, and in parallel Krupp was asked to develop the tank transport semi-trailer.
The result was the SLT 50-2 tractor and the 52-ton SaAnh semi-trailer. The combination was first tested in 1971. The first production combination was delivered in April 1976. Some 324 were built up to 1979, in one series, by Faun (tractor) and Kässbohrer (trailer, under Krupp license).
To be able to cope with the newest versions of the Leopard 2 MBT, the vehicles were upgraded from 1994 to the standard SLT 50-3. This modernisation program was completed in 2000, and it is expected that the vehicles will be able to operate until 2015.

Re: SLT50-3 ''ELEFANT'' Tank Transporter. Revell 1/72
Onto the kit I will build.
The instruction manual is formed into a book which is 30 pages in total.
This is split into 3 sections, the first 15 pages are for the tractor unit and the trailer. The rest is for the PzH2000 and the FENNEK.
There are 2 sprues for the trailer unit (but I only took a picture of one).

SLT50-3 ''ELEFANT'' Tank Transporter. Revell 1/72
I started with the chassis of the tractor unit as the instructions suggested.
Some parts had to be taken off the sprue very carefully otherwise i could have broken them in half. But thankfully after going to SMC 2014 I managed to find small saw blades that fitted onto my scalpel. So this this did the job.
There were no flashes to remove, so everything was crisp and clean.
Once I made this up I decided to base coat the interior of the cab ready for painting (before assembly)

What a delightful kit, a nice mix of land vehicles, gotta love these multi-subject kits! Even if one is bad, the others can still make it price worthy

This is an an update that should have been done earlier in the week, so here it is.
Main focus on this was the cab and the large pack behind the cab. Very little or none at all of flash. Needed very steady hands to place some parts on like the wing mirrors.
The roof of the cab is not glued yet as I need to touch up the interior

Re: SLT50-3 ''ELEFANT'' Tank Transporter. Revell 1/72
Managed to finish the tractor unit completely late last night. Everything went together well with no problems at all.
Hope to get this undercoated within the next couple of days, and while this is curing I will get on with the trailer unit.
