[WIP] C-47A "The Voice" 1/48

Post by peppie »

For the Vietnam GB, I decided for a C-47, AKA the Dakota.
And it's a biggie.

First let me start by introducing him.
The box.
Image
And the sprues.
Image
With, despite there is a civilian version on the box, a group off para's.
Image
Some detail.
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
The glass.
Image
And the book.
Image

Only thing missing now, is the stickers.
Since the set that came with the kit was unusable, old and yellow, I started
looking around for something else. US and Royal Airforce were easy to find,
but have all been done before (also by me), so I wanted something different.
Then I found these.
Image
Image
Very colourfull and something I had never seen before.

It's nice to find a set like this, but it's also nice to have the story behind
this. So I went looking on the WWW and I found 1 website with the story, including
a whopping total off 3 pictures...
It's a bit off a long story ,so I'm going to give you the short version:
In the early 50's, communism came running from China towards and into countries
like Korea and Indochina (Vietnam). The Americans, who did not really like that,
decided to call upon the good people off Korea to stand up against this.
Seeing a lot off people were living in the jungle, where they had no radio or
television, the Americans used airplanes and helicopters equiped with powerful
loudspeakers to achieve their goal.

The French gouverment, in those days the boss in Indochina, saw this, thought it
was a good idea and decided to try the same. After some failed attempts with
a JU52, which was to slow (easily shot down) and to loud (nobody could hear the
speaker), found out they did not have the right equipment.
In 1952 they asked the Americans to lend them one off their specially equiped planes.
The Americans agreed and send them one off their C-47a's, called "The Speaker"
Image
A plane which had done allready a lot off missions over Korea.
There only were some comditions:
- They could only use it over Indochina.
- They could never use it for transporting American crew or staff.
- It should bear French or Vietnamese signs.

They received the plane on the 3rd off december, The first mission was on the 4th
off December and the plane was returned on the 20th off december.
In this time, the plane had flown 14 missions.

As you can see in this picture I found (the only one), the French painted the underside
and part off the sides Black, and put French markings on it. Also you can see some off
the Vietnamese text.
Image
On the right, you can just see the rack with the speakers, just like on the next picture.
Image
Here you can see the speakers clearly, with on the left the "tub" that went over it.

And here the last pic I have. It's the inside off the plane during a mission.
Image
In this picture you can see a guy talking "live" into a mike. Later they changed to
recordings, so there would not be any bacjground noice from the plane into the mike.

The whole story you can find here:
http://www.psywar.org/voicesfromheaven.php

So, it flew in Vietnam, but does it qualify for this GB? I don't know, you tell me.
I'm going to build it anyway.

Enough talk, time for some action.
Started by cutting all the parts from the sprues, that I needed before glueing the
body shut. Oh, and also the enginecovers (No, I don't know why...)
Image
Image
Scribed the lines between the small flaps (sh#t, I'm bad at naming parts) to make them
stand out a little bit more, and rounded each corner a little bit to give the illusion
that they are loose from each other. Later found out that in real, these things are
dead straight. Hey, just call it artistic...
Image
The whole shabang ready for some primer.
Image
But first a little dryfit off course.
Image
Looking not to bad on first sight.
Some Vallejo primer.
Image
I forgot, before primer I glued in some bulkheads.
After drying, some interior Green.
Image
Well, something that looks like it anyway. Unfortunately I don't own the complete range
off colours off any brand, so I have to make do with wat I have.
Image
Image
After that, I added soem yellow to the green and started to brighten up here and there.
Image
Very difficult to see on the pictures.
Some flat black.
Image
And because I have no decal, I used a silver pencil for the gauges. Looked nicer
in real life....
Image
After some chipping and a wash.
Image
Image
Image
On teh picture off "the Speaker" I discovered some extra small windows just in front off
the side windows. So with the help off some drills and a small file, these were created.
Im going to fill these with woodglue later, to create glass (my first time).
Image
The tubs were the wheels go in. Decided I'm going to display this one "in flight",
so with the wheels up, so I'm not going to detail this much.
Image
Oh, almost forgot these pics, some extra colour in the interior.
Image

Sorry, I don't have so many pics off the interior. Sometimes when I'm building,
I forget to take pictures.

Untill next time.

Me like bit out of the ordinary  , for size look a few pictures up. You can see it lying on my cutting mat, there's inches on it, and for the more educated people centimeters

Part 2.

A small update.

______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________

Let me start by saying I'm sorry I don't have more pictures off the interior.
Reason for that is I build the interior OOB and kept it simple. Everyone who has
ever build a Dakota, knows that once you close the fuselage, nothing off the
interior can be seen anymore.

Anyway, let's go on.
As you can see on the picture off "The Speaker", one off the windows has been
replaced by a panel.
Image
So, before I glued in the windows, I made a mold off the window that I wanted
to block.
Image
Stuck it to some styreen plate and cut it out.
Image
The styreen was a little bit to thick, so I sanded back the glass to get the panel
flush to the rest off the hull. Glued in the windows and after that the panel.
Image
Here you can also see the two litlle windows on the left finished.
Now it was time to close up the hull. So everyone, say bye bye to the interior :hi: .
Image
Fit was not to bad, almost no gaps. Only problem was the difference in height off
the two halfs. This has to be taken care off. Worst thing was the panellines going
across did not meet up.. Nice one :bash:
Image
Same problem on the belly where a hatch didn't meet up. Ah well, we will get to that
later, first the glue must dry.

Next step, the middle piece off the wings (sorry, forget how to name this  ). As you can
see, the support beam doesn't fit so nice.
Image
And yes, I forgot to pant these parts off the tubs. Going to sort that out later.
Anyway, with some force the beam went in.
Image
Waiting for the glue to dry, I glued the wheels.
Image
I always do this with the extra bits still on. After the glue dries I cut and sand
away those bits. This way you prevent getting a step between the two halves.

In the mean time the middlepiece dried, so time to get on with the wings.
Now, I know wings have a "special" shape so they create lift, but I'm pretty sure
this isn't the shape they are supposed to be... :wtf: .
Image
Image
A little bit bad to see with the black plastic, but believe me, there is a gap.
Seemed like the bottom pieces were crooked, but the top ones were ok.
Decide to glue them together first and the see what I could to fix this. So with
a lot off glue and some force....
Image
Lucky me, the bad half bent to the good half, making the end result look not to
bad. Even nice.
For the wings I use the same technique as with the wheels. First I glue them together
and then I take away the extra material. Off course I always do a dry fit before
glueing, to check for pieces that are in the way. Like this time the locator pins
that were really off.

Next step, first with a rounded knife taking away the worst edges, caused by the
difference in hight.
Image
How that turns out, I'll show you in the next part off my build.

______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________

The fit off this oldie is not to shabby up to now.
Learned something today. I allready knew that a bad thing about raised panellines
is that it doesn't look so nice. But what I didn't know, up to now, is that they
make it impossible to sand without destroying them completely....
And what I don't know is; how am I going to restore them?:

Questions or comments? Yes please.

Peter.

One off these monsters is enough for me..
That one is on my list also, but after this one I sill have 4 Italeri Dakota's to build. Yes I know, I'm a bit off a Dakota fan. Gladly these are all 1/72 though

Part 3

Kinda busy with work lately, so I haven't had much time to work on this
monster.
Also, the fact that it has raised panellines, doesn't really stimulate me
to work on this kit. Problem for me is: a) I can not work on two kits at
the same time, and b) I can never get myself to bin a kit.
So, I will finish it, eventually...

______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________

Oke, where was I.... Oh right, the bodywork.
After glueing the hull together, I started to scrape away some hight differences.
Image
This off course, damaged a lot off the vertical panellines.
Image
En a panel here and there.
Image
Image
After this I started filling some seams and gaps.
Image
And some work on the wings. This also shows you the size off this baby.
Image
Came across this...
Image

A ftiend off mine gave me this, some tape used by the guys who install central
heating and stuff. It's thick alu tape with a sticky back side.
Image
Perfect for doing these kind off things.
Image
It's got backing paper on it, so this works really easy.
Image

Got a bit tired off filling and sanding, so time io do some other jobs.
I want to present the plane flying, so gear up. Kitmakers probably don't
want you to and don't ad this possiblity to the kit, so you will have to
adjust soem things yourself to make this possible.
Step 1: remove the top part off the gear.
Image
Dry fit, the fork fits behind the wheel, but only just.
Image
Now I'll have to find a way to connect it, but first this.
Saw on pictures that the axle is a hollow pipe, so I sanded the ends
flat and drilled them out.
Image
Image
Not really good to see with the black plastic but believe me, the holes
are in.
And since I had the drill in my hand, drilled out the air intakes and made
the "legs" on the side off it smaller.
Image
Image

Since I haven't figured out yet how to place the wheels in a upright position,
I started working on the tail wheel. They want you to glue in the wheel
between two half legs. This means first painting and the glueing and since I
don't like this way off working I decided to do something different.
Cut off the litle legs, glued some round evergreen inside the wheel (the
original hole was quite big) and drilled a hole 0,6 mm. Drilled the same size hole
in the legs, and voila.
Image
Image
Image
This way I can paint the wheel and the leg separatly and then assemble with only
a little bit of glue.

The props.
When you look at c-47's on the internet you find that there's not really one colourscheme
for them, they are all different. Completely black, only the blades black, cone silver, cone
chrome en so on.
Seeing I just bought the highgloss black basecoat from Alclad, I decided to try this on these
parts and make props with chrome cones. Sprayed the complete props in the base coat,
Because they say it's some kind off primer.... right?
Image
Nice smooth ground for the chrome later, and the blades are already black. Also used
the same stuff to primer some other parts.
Image
Did the wheels to, this gave some problems later..
Anywho, going on with the props. The blades are allready black, so on with the yellow
tips. Came out pretty good I think.
Image
Only when I touched the tip later with my finger, the yellow came off.
Ok.... so the Vallejo doesn't stick to the basecoat...
So, only one thing I could do..
Image
Just to be sure, an extra coat off Alclad grey primer.
Image
Then first the yellow and then the flat black.
Image
And then finally, the chrome.
Image
And to finish them completely, some gloss, decals, and after taping up the
cones, a layer off matt.
Image
They are finished.

Unfortunatly I also painted the wheels with Vallejo, silver like on the
photo's where you can clearly see that the wheels and gear are painted and not
bare metal.
Image
Off course this also came off, so they had to be redone with the gray primer
as well. Painted the tires and gave the wheels a wash.
Image
The tires can do with a wash as well, but I decided to do this later.

Also thought off a way to place the wheels. From Evergreen, two sizes off pipe,
that fit into each other.
Image
Drilled the wheels and placed the smaller size in to the wheels. Some short pieces
off the bigger pipe over the smaller pipe and fixed them with some tape.
Image
Put some superg;ue on the thicker pipe and tried to place it with the wheel, so I
could see what I was doing. Sadly the thinner pipe also got stuck in the glue
(off course).
Image
Not a big problem. This way I can slide wheels over the thinner pipe later, and then
place the fork. Same principle.
Sadly no picture.

On with the body. Befor proceeding with the sanding, I thought it would be best
to close the body and tape up the glass.
To start with the front window. Monogram says you can easily glue it in place
after the two halves off the body are glued together.
Image
Believe me, this will never work.
Image
After some thinking, I could only see one solution, cutting it in half.
Here you can see the glass with the extra free airbubbles inside. Ok....
I don't know what to do about this so I decided to leave it like this.
Image
Taped up the glass and glued it in place with the fabulous Gator's Grip, removing
the excess glue with a cotton swab, swiping the glue into the small gap in the
middle.
Image
Image

Now I have no more excuses..... I'll have to start on restoring these panellines.
Not something I'm looking forward to. That's why I postponed it for this long.
First step is to spray a layer off gray primer on it, because the black plastic
makes it very hard to see.
Image
And then, as always, some more problems come to the surface.
Image
Oh, and before the primer I removed a panelline that was going across the front door (?)
and closed up some holes I drilled for the antennas that are not going on (my bad).
Image

Amd this is how far I got up to now. Also did some work on the engines but I can't
seem to find any pics off that, sorry.

______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________

And now I'm sitting here staring at the body, trying to figure out the best way to
restore the raised panellines. Man, no more raised panellines for me in the future.

Thanks for watching.

Comments or tips, yes please

Great update mate.

For the panel lines try putting some tape either side of the panel where you want it then use primer to build it up with light coats or I've heared it done with thin strips of tape or decals weather it works I affriad I dont know because I just normally recribe all the panel lines.

Sorry I can't be of any more help.

Thanks guys, also for the tips on the panellines.
I guess I just need to stop thinking about it and go and do it (the panellines).
JayCub wrote: I woul be reluctant to toss a kit out myself and I have complete admiration for your perseverance with this build
Thanks, I must admit there were some times I wanted to give up. But something in me stops me from throwing it in the bin.
I guess it's something about a waiste off money or something, after all we Dutchies are like the Scotts off the main land
To be honest, I find I really have to push myself to go on with this build, where normally I have to stop me from being in my mancave all the time.
But I'll get there........ eventually

They are static discharge lines or wicks that bleed off the static that is built up on the wings during flight.
