M50A1 Ontos The "Thing"

Post by Hokum »

Ok I've not started yet but I'm just putting my thread here for when it starts... With any luck tonight!

Ok on with what I'm working on.

The boxed tank.

The Ontos is an unusual AFV, designed for the US army then rejected and picked up by the USMC.

The design was based on the T55/56 chassis and had common transmission with the equally weird M56 Scorpion Tank Destroyer.

The Ontos mounted 6! 106mm (really 105mm) recoilless rifles which allowed either fire in rapid succession, single fire or all at once. The resulting output was the equivalent to 6 M48 Patton tanks firing at one. The drawback was low armour and once fired the rifles had to be reloaded externally meaning the tank had to pull out of line or to cover to reload.

I'm going to base my tank and possible diorama on this image.

I guess we'll see how it all comes together!

That's a menacing looking piece of machinery that I've never seen before? Enjoy building her mate and good luck :)

Cheers :cheers2:

I like the look of this, a very unusual looking vehicle. It must have been quite something when all 6 guns fired at the same time. I will follow this with interest.

Strange you should mention that...

"During the Ontos’ testing at the Army’s Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, all six guns were fired at once and the backblast was so great that it knocked bricks out of nearby buildings and shattered numerous car windows."

Opening the box..

The scary stuff... I've never built with PE before...

The first part done, the suspension.

Ok, I've almost finished the Universal carrier now so I can get back to this. I'll be starting on the upper chassis tonight.

Well i'm awaiting some parts (crew the driver mainly) as need to scratch a seat and get him in the right position. I also need some parts for bending the photo etch I've done one bit but some of the exhaust cover are thin and need some kind of clamp.

Image

Here is the partly built top section. I've modified the drivers hatch to be open.

Delays delays delays!

It took 4 weeks to get the crew figures! I ended up getitng them form Ebay after my local model shop faffed about for too long.

But here is the current status. Hull completed.

Can't wait to see how this comes together mate! It certainly does look a little bit different than your normal Patton  . Good luck! You did a great job with the PE compared to my first try  .
