Tamiya 1/35 Panzer II Ausf. F/G

Post by Lee »

This will be my first 1/35 armour...... :wtf:

I'm going to do the G version, which has the extended radio antenna and the extra stowage (I think!) box on the rear of the turret. I won't be doing the figures, they're going in the spares box, I may do the commander though, see how I feel. I got the Eduard photo etch set too as it looks like it could do with a little pazaaz...lol.

What do you think about this kit (especially in terms of the tracks)?
Does it worth the money?

I wonder how many units Tamiya produced of this kit? I see them everywhere. I'm glad that model builders are still making use of this vintage model. Looking forward to seeing them all built up. :cheers2:

Saw one at Telford and was sorely tempted but SWMBO :naughty: has banned me from buying anymore models until i've built some. But for it's age it looks very modern.

Well, serious lack of time has meant that there is no way I'm going to get all the etch done in time. Really grips my S*** that I don't have a lot of time to model any more these days!

So, I'm going to go for the F version now without the etch. Hopefully, it'll still look good :(

I have used the wrong grey! It's too light, I picked up the wrong bottle out of the ones I was testing (very annoyed!), but too late to change it now. So, onwards...

Hopefully get some filters on tonight....

I paint my models always slightly lighter than they should be because the washes and so on tone down the paint a bit. It will become darker so i don´t think thats a big issue. Camo looks great!

So, sat looking at the Panzer this morning and noticed I hadn't done anything with the exhaust! I've never had to rust anything before so this is my first time at rusting, be gentle.... :wtf:

I tried to use a couple of colours to give the rust some tonal difference, then hairspray over the top...

Image

It doesn't look too bad, but there's definitely not enough dark rust or variation (lesson learned for next time)...
Image

A very thin coat of grey...

Image

Image

Then went to work with a reasonably stiff brush very lightly. I out a very thin coat of grey on so, not much effort was needed....

Image

Image

As you can see, none of the tonal variance has come through at all, which is a little disappointing. But I'm now going to purchase a rust set from somewhere for the next one :) I'm hoping that the Ultimate rust wash will make a difference as well as I'll also be mixing that with the dark dirt to get a little darker rust effect.

Then I did the tool handles - Nothing special... :(

Image

Image

Then added some smoke on the rear vents, some small rust/dirt spots here and there around the body and a few other odds and sods done. Now ready for gloss coat and decals :D

Got to say I'm really enjoying this, you armour guys have a new convert :th:

Got a little done today. I'm trying my hardest to get this done before the deadline, going to be a close thing through.....lol

This is my first attempt at rust streaking so, please be gentle. I've still got to do a few different washes to do, but it's not far off now!

Let me know though if you think I've over done it or done it wrong. Constructive criticism is more than welcomed :th:

Thanks guys...

Well, final update. Looks like I will get this done on time....!!! I know right...

Put the final wash on (Dark Dirt) just to dirty the PzII up a little....

Image

Image

Image

Put the tracks on - what a PITA too....
You can't see it, but I've used three washes on them and dry brushed the edges in silver. They look really effective, but the camera's not picking it up :(

Image

Image

Just got to do the headlights, another wash (dust/light dirt) and matt coat then it's done. I really want to do a small base for this, but don;t have the time before the end of the SiG so, will do one at a later date....

REALLY enjoyed doing this.... "D
