Hobby Boss 1:72 Bell UH-1C "Huey"

Post by Radzy »

Howdy,

There was a game in old times called Gauntlet... One of the characters you could play was Warrior. If he was low on health he used to say "Warrior needs food! Warrior is about to die!"
I can paraphrase it with... "Modeller needs glue! Modeller is about to be bored :D ". There's my 3rd entry for GB build (hopefully I will finish all of them... but I'm still waiting for Hasegawa Mig-17/Mig-21 combo ... but postman is late :) ).

If we talk about Cold War Era and those bold machines of early jet era we think... Migs, Sabres, F-4s, F-5s, -14s, big bombers, superfortresses, tupolevs... whoa tons of stuff. But then we sit down watching Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Forrest Gump, Japanese Gojira movies, Terminators, even A-Team and all these tens of movies that share one common thing:
They all starred a workhorse of American Army, the piece of cra... art that was build in numbers exceeding 15000 !

[courtresy of Wikipedia]

So there was no option not to build Bell UH-1 Iroquis family heli.

The biggest problem with UH-1 is to .. what to say to keep it short :) There were so many versions of the helicopter which entered service in 1959. I think that US Army used all letters in alphabet to name all the variants :)
Generally it was introduced as medevac aircraft to directly support soldiers on battlefield but it's versatility quickly turned it into combat transport, gunship or many other roles (also those in domestic aviation). It was mainly used by US Army, JGSDF and Australians. Many variants are still operational (even few weeks ago I saw one of commercial versions still flying over Madrid, Spain).

So this it... I must have one of them on the shelf. And my choice was HB 1:72 UH-1C gunship version.
The model itself is very nice, but as with Mi-4 ... instruction lacks directions for internal painting... C'mon HobbyBoss wakey, wakey !! :)
Model seems to be easy though and hopefully build will be flawless.

Some pics of the model box and "unspoiled" interior:

I will shortly present short kit review of this model.
So,
Keep calm,
Build Models
And
Stay tuned (eating cookies :D ).

This thread was dusting for too long.
As my Mil Mi-4 is almost ready... well it's time to give it some refreshment :)

Here comes:
Update #1

40 mins only Today, but I managed to finish he cockpit and ready it for painting. It's really nice and easy to build kit. Not much to clean inside, just little sanding where elements were attached to sprues.
Again really great details from Hobby Boss, they really know how to make a noobie modeller happy :)

Without too much meaningles chatter, few pics. I dry fitted interior to show you guys how nice it will look :)

I need to paint whole interior before I proceed.

Cheers,
Radek

Such an iconic bird too.
That canopy will be interesting to mask.
Did the kit come with precut one?

Unfortunately not... And the aftermarket ones are virtually impossible to get within reasonable time...

So the only things left are own masks... and patience, lots of patience and tamiya's masking tape :D
But it doesn't look that bad - there aren't any round clear parts (like it was in this Mi-4) and with triangular or rectangular shapes should be much easier. Especially that I already have some (bad) experience :)

Thanks guys for support :)

Friday's evening intoxicated by Tamiya's Extra Thin vapours I bring you ...

Update #2

Finally I managed to paint the interior... It took me quite a time to research correct colours, but finally I decided to go for the large bench in "cargo compartment" and painted it with Interior green colour. Front seats got leather belt coloured ... cushions :D
Again used some silver to simulate scratches and sepia acrylic wash from Vallejo to weather interior a little bit.

After short struggle to put the hull together I sealed the hull. I must admit that so far the build is a real pleasure. Not much sanding, no flashes, parts fit almost pefectly. I added small weight in front of heli just in case :)

So here's all paints and stuff I used so far:

And now some progress pictures:

That's all folks for now. Any feedback welcome as always :)

Cheers,
Radek
