It's been a while since I've posted an update. Mostly because I forgot to link it from Youtube to the forum... DuuuH!!!!
There's this video and the one that I'm processing now. I'll post that when it's finished.
As soon as I'm done typing this I plan on taking some pictures too.
I've been so busy around the house I keep forgetting what I'm doing haha.

Don't laugh Ian.... but none. :eeek:
This and the BF109E4 are the only flyers that I've done since I was a teenager.
Neither are finished yet. The 109 only has the fuselage together and the cockpit done.
I'm a complete noob haha.

You're a brave man Dan haha.
I think that I'm almost done the construction now, just the landing gear and maybe dressing up of the engine with some plumbing and greebles.
The gold paint is due to arrive tomorrow so hopefully I'll be all set for painting too. :th:

Loving watching the videos on this :th:

One thing I will say though, the mr surfacer, you may have to get rid of it where you have sanded the gaps and left mr surfacer either side, I know it may look/feel smooth but the alclad will show anything through It.

Thanks Paul, I wouldn't have known that. I was planning on going over her again with the polishing stick anyway before I went at her with the alclad. Now I know to concentrate on the surfacer. I probably won't use that again on a plane. There's a white putty that everyone is on about that I might try out.

Damn straight Lee planes are definitely harder.. Well harder for me anyway. The discipline is totally different and I have to get used to it. It's like learning to drive in the UK after driving in NA your whole life.

Yeah Gav... I need my head examined haha.

You ideally need to use both mate, use the white putty first to fill the gap then mr surfacer to finish it. Best tip I can give is to run masking tape either side of the seem that needs filling, close up to the seem so that any filler placed in the gap fills the seem fine but doesn't go everywhere else. Once dry pull the tape of and you only have a small amount of filler to remove.

I also find it better to dab the mr surfacer on rather than paint it on as again there's less to clean up. :th:

I discovered the tape trick about an hour after I did the last seam... Doh!
I already knew about the mr surfacer trick. Ya have to watch it with the higher viscosity stuff though it will start texturing if you dab too long. :th: :cheers2: :cheers2:

I finally got some work done on her.
I'm about to turn around and hopefully do some more... hopefully.

Here's the latest vid on her, once I sand down the filler I put on her last night I'll take a few pictures.
There's not much to look at, at the moment she's just all black primer.
(Alclad primers... a bit stinky... but NICE!!! WOW!!!...Paul.. you Da'Man for putting me on to this stuff!!)

Here's the pictures of after the first coat of primer.
I've just finished constructing and adding the landing gear so assembly is complete and all that's left is paint.

So I'll give it one more quick coat of primer and then I'll see if I can figure out how to sand it. Then I'll start the base coats.

I'm ssoooo sccccaaared.

If it looks this good in a stinky colour, it should be really smart after a top coat, and completely whiffy.

That primer looks like it's really fine, all the details are showing up nicely already.

It's looking great so far, mate. They were beautiful looking machines in that gorgeous gold. I've had a few issues with gold paint lately and wonder if I should've used a darker undercoat instead of white?

Oh, that photo of you with the gasmask reminded me of this -

That's an awesome T-shirt. :th:
As for the gold, I've been told that the secret is thin coats and build it up. I haven't heard anything about a base coat causing a problem.
I'm planning on a black alcad primer as the base with the gold on top of that.
Hopefully that will work out.

I think the main difference is I've brush painted mine and you'll be spraying. I have another project on my desk requiring a brass finish and I'm having the same issue of the white showing through too much so perhaps I'll try a black undercoat and see how it looks.

I saw that shirt on a web site about lowered Volkswagens. I'm not a fan of lowered cars and I don't have a VW but I love the shirts! Have a look here - Gesenkt

Finally... I got something done on the F86!
The first coat of gold on her. I was going to use the Alclads to finish her off, but after an hour and a half of practising I couldn't get the finish to the point that I'd be willing to spray it on the plane. It's not that the paint it crap... it's the user. I'm not used to that type of paint, and it's a metal finish... pretty much the hardest finsh that you can go for on an aircraft.
So I put the Alclads aside and went with what I know, which is acrylics. Vallejo Model Air Gold was the winner.
At first I tried to use the VA thinners but it was spitting an clogging the brush. I wasn't about to spray that near the plane after I spent 2 hours sanding the bumps out of it. So I used the little bit of Ultimate Thinner that I have on hand and that did the trick.
The stuff sprayed like silk.
I was very happy with the finish of the first coat.
So later today I'll give it a light sanding with some micro mesh and give it a second coat.
Tomorrow I'll do the details and trim painting, then gloss coat her.
I'll let her sit under cover for two days then it's decal time.
I'm hoping that next weekend will see her safely on the shelf.
:)
