1/48 Eduard Mig21-MF ProfiPACK

Post by SiDennis »

This is going to be my entry into the Cold War group build. I was saving this kit to do the Egyptian Air Force paint scheme (as on the box), but as its not Cold War I will be doing the Soviet paint scheme.
This build will have a few firsts for me, first entry into a group build, first time using Photo Etch and the first time using Vallejo paints.
Looking through the instructions, i think I am going to build it with the air brakes in the open position, this will involve some chain drilling and filing (better not get this wrong as it's what i do as a job on real sized aircraft).

Phots of whats in the box!

Will try my best to keep this updated with phots and waffle.

Am hoping to get it completed on time as i have just been promoted with a posting within 3 months

Anyway, am not the greatest of modelers, but am really going to give to my best, lets hope it all goes according to plan :thumb2:

It's a bit slack at work at the mo, so have completed the ejection seat. Nearly went cross-eyed doing the Photo Etch

When my eyes return back to normal, will start on the air brakes.

Many thanks for all the kind comments guys :th: really appreciate it.
Quick update, I have done the cut-outs for the air brakes, it went ok, will have to see what they look like once I get some primer on them.
After quite a few attempts, I managed to get the cockpit colour as close as I could to the Photo Etch, I used Tamiya flat yellow XF-3 and Tamiya sky blue X-14 at a ratio of 4 parts blue to 1 part yellow.
With any luck I should have the fuselage together over the weekend, will post phots.
Phots below.

Quick update, cockpit all finished, am really chuffed with it. Carried out a dry fit of the fuselage, had a gap of around 2mm aft of the nose wheel bay :wall:
A lot if filing later, have managed to close the gap.
Hoping to get the fuse together tonight, will post photos of it tomorrow night.
Phot of cockpit.
Sorry about the quality of the phots, had to use my phone :th:

"Not much of modeller" you say Rocky... Your too modest mate it's top draw. Anyway you'd better get a wriggle on, you've got a months worth of work on them damn stencils alone......
Yes.. It is supposed to look like that!

Pit's looking good mate, nice shade of green you got there.

Can I ask why you had to cut the airbrakes out? Are there PE replacements or parts to allow you to position them open?

Once again, thanks for the kind words guys.
Lysion, I mixed tamiya XF-3 flat yellow and tamiya X-14 sky blue. I took some time experimenting, managed to get it near enough the same as the photo etch.

Joesdad, thanks mate, have not been doing it that long, I consider myself quite the novice when I see some of the fantastic work you guys are producing on here :th:
And yes I do need to get a wriggle on :o am moving house and starting a new job on the 6th of Jan :wall: looking forward to all the decals though

Gav0909, it gives you the option of air brakes open or closed. If you go for the open option you have to remove the closed air brakes which are moulded in the fuselage, more work but I think they look better open.

Right, big update, after a week or so not really getting anything done due to work commitments and the wife and kids giving me grief
I have finally made some progress.

Got the fuselage together, wings on (slight gap at the wing roots tidied up with some Milliput), all the little aero bits on and stuck the masks on that came with the kit .

Primed everything in Vallejo grey primer, painted the underside, lots of masking up and painted the camo scheme on the top.

Really pleased with it so far, next is to get the exhaust shrouds painted with Alclad and lay down 2-3 coats of Klear and get started on all the decals :wall:
