#10 Revell 1/144 B-2 Spirit

Post by TommyKillander »

Hey Guys!

I was a little bit unsure if I had the time to join this SiG, but I had a look at the kit yesterday and it seems like a quick build ;)

Boxart:

Background:
The Northrop (later Northrop Grumman) B-2 Spirit, also known as the Stealth Bomber, is an American heavy penetration strategic bomber, featuring low observable stealth technology designed for penetrating dense anti-aircraft defenses; it is a flying wing design with a crew of two. The bomber can deploy both conventional and thermonuclear weapons, such as eighty 500 lb (230 kg)-class (Mk 82) JDAM Global Positioning System-guided bombs, or sixteen 2,400 lb (1,100 kg) B83 nuclear bombs. The B-2 is the only acknowledged aircraft that can carry large air-to-surface standoff weapons in a stealth configuration.

Image

The B-2 is capable of all-altitude attack missions up to 50,000 feet (15,000 m), with a range of more than 6,000 nautical miles (6,900 mi; 11,000 km) on internal fuel and over 10,000 nautical miles (12,000 mi; 19,000 km) with one midair refueling. It entered service in 1997 as the second aircraft designed to have advanced stealth technology after the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk attack aircraft. Though designed originally as primarily a nuclear bomber, the B-2 was first used in combat dropping conventional, non-nuclear ordnance in the Kosovo War in 1999.
It later served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya.

Okay..... sorry for the slow progress on this, but I have had a really busy summer and also a glitch in my building mojo...

But now I'm on vacation - things are starting to level out and feel more relaxed :thumb2:

So let's get started!

This is the first time I see that instructions mention ejection pins... so I better remove them then...

Image

The canopy looks like something the cat have dragged in.... +1mm thick misty plastic that does not fit the fuselage.
Image

I did my best to polish the surfaces, but I soon discovered that the plastic was contaminated with dust (or possibly airbubbles).
Image

After som consideration I have deiced to build the aircraft gear up; I think it will show the shape of the aircraft better and I don't have to mess with landing gear and bomb doors ;)
So I have to reinforce the attachment point a bit to make this work.
Image

So let's continue to look at the rest of the parts:
Image

Image
But, no one promised me a rose garden (Revell seldom do that) :D

Let's call in an airstrike with sprue-glue and fix that!
Image

I'm halfways through the top side of the fuselage and most of my sanders are depleted at this point
Image
So I will order som new ones and I will also see if I can get my hands on the Begemot decal-set for the B2, since I have been warned about the decal sheet.

Image

Stay tuned!

Okay.... let's continue with the styrene-torture

All the ugly raised panellines and other overdimensioned stuff will be sanded away (I'll admit that some of that is thanks to Collaterla Damage Dept.). But I will probably not rescribe any panel-lines, since this is a 1/144 scale model. Looking at photos it's hard to see them even at close up range. On the other hand I can change my mind until it's time for primer.... ;)

The nose section and windshield are sanded down vigourosly and all seams are filled with CA-glue and sanded down again.
Image

Seams at the motor gondols is filled after the sprue-goo have been sanded down.
Image

Things are starting to look more decent now after 3 rounds och CA-glue and sanding. The goal is that the windsheld shall be totally flush with the fuselage. After that I will start polish the windshield like crazy :D
Image

I need to figure out how to make paint masks for the canopy that are really crisp
Image

Yes, it's an awesome looking aircraft.

I watched the documentary about Jack Northrop "The Wing Will Fly" the other day.
The man dedicated his life to the design concept of flying wings, but his designs where never put into production. In the end of the documentary there is a very touching scene where he gets the opportunity to see a model of the B-2. He passed away shortly after that.

Hey Guys!

So the build continues with some more crazy stuff

Trying to fix the closed up landing gear and bomb doors - it does not really fit and there is no support for attaching the lids :?
Image

Image

While the glue is curing, I decided to start on a simple base. It's made from 10mm MDF board
Image

Image

Image

Image

And I need a pilot and mission commander in the cockpit!
Image

Image

Image

Image

The Dudes!  :shifty:
Image

Decal for the IP
Image

And I attached the 1.5mm tube into the fuselage for the brass rod

Cheers!

We're in the pipe, five by five :D

Time to install the cockpit and mate the fuselage halves together

And we can also attach the "side-wings" (I have no idea what they are called on a flying wing design)

Re: #10 Revell 1/144 B-2 Spirit

Post by TommyKillander »

Okay!

I need paint masks but there aren't any available for the Revell 1/144 scale kit... So if I can't buy them I'll have to steal them instead :wtf:

Well it's not really stealing, since I'll have to do a lot of work so I will call it "reuse" instead

There are no paint masks available for this kit, but there are a couple of masking sets for 1/72 scale models, like Monogram or Model Collect kits.
I have found the basic Eduard and New Ware mask sets that has canopy masks - which is what I'm looking for.

I use the Eduard CX504 mask set and rescale it for 1/144.
Image

Since I have invested in a Silhouette Portrait I will just grab the CX504 from the Internet as a low resolution image, pull it into Silhouette Studio, convert it into vector format, rescale it to 1/144 and cut my own mask set. Simple as that.

I reality I had to reshape the contours, since the Model Collect and Revell kit does not have the same shape of the windscreen, but after som tinkering and trial'n'error I finally got it choochin'
Image
This is not the final version - I have done some more improvements afterwards

New Ware also have a RAM mask, but based on the amount of work to get the canopy masks to shape, I'm not convinced that I will go through the process of rescaling them from 1/72 to 1/144. We'll see.... maybe I'll do it.

Anyway, the upper side is more or less completed now. I haven't decided in the rescribe thing, though...

Next step will be to fill and sand the underside.
Image

Revell your are so funny....  :violin:

Marketing and Legal Dept does not have a clue what scalemodelling is all about...... :D

Hey Guys!

I's been a good day at the bench, had some good progress on the B2

I made a first round of filler, decided to use Tamiya Putty because it's easier to sand than sprue-glue (I haven't used this stuff for years)
Image

And after a couple of hours drying I did some intense sanding it looked liked this, good enough for me :P
Image

And I decided to rescribe some of the most prominent panel-lines, using an old airbrush needle and some Dymo tape as guide.
Image

And after that I hit it with Ultimate black primer.
Image

Image

Image
I'm very pleased with the topside, there are only a couple of misses that I need to fix.

...but the underside looks horrible, but I will only fix the worst cavities. :shifty:
Image

I'm very pleased with the progress sofar; I will soon start painting it, I think.

The Begemot decal set in on it's way, so I hope it will arrive early next week.

Hello !

I have basically spent the whole the day making RAM paint masks from the New Ware kit.

I used the same process as the for the windscreen masks, but it took a lot of more effort to clean up the drawning because the RAM masks are much more complicated. I have basically redrawn every one of them, except for the L/R mirrored ones, where I only needed to do one and make a mirrored copy of that.

Image

I will print and test-fit them on the model tomorrow :thumb2:

Thanks a lot, Scott :)

Yeah, I worked for many years as a electronics design engineer and I spent most of my working time at a CAD-station, so I'm pretty comfortable sitting in front of a computer. The Silhouette Studio software is half-decent, but it cannot be compared to a professional CAD software...

I hope that the filling-and-sanding-days will soon be over for this model.... ;)

Thanks Nige :D

About the masks; I will check that they are correct first but after that I will figure out some way to make the .studio3 file available, so that someone with a Silhouette cutter can grab the file and make their own copies. I might make a YouTube video on the topic, but I haven't decided on how to approach that yet.

Hey Guys!

I have fixed the underside of the B2 and the base aswell, so I primed them again with Ultimate Black Primer. The spoons will be used for some paint experiments ;)
Image

RAM masks have been cut and it's looking promising.
Image

I found a couple of small errors, so I will fix that and make a new set.
Image

I also spent some time fooling around with the base and I made a first attempt at the RAM-paint; my idea is to replicate the soft metallic sheen by first put down a metal coat with some tonal variation in. After that I coat with highly diluted grey paint.
Image

I used Vallejo Metal Colour "Pale Burnt Metal" and "Exhaust Manifold"
Image

I used Gunze H337 for the grey RAM colour.
Image

I spray one pass too much with the blend coat  So it got just a tad too grey...
Image
I might fix that after I have cut the next set of masks... ;)

So, it's been a busy day at the workbench - vacation is the best cure for a low build mojo :D

I fixed the RAM paint masks so they fit better (atleast on the upper side) - call it cheating but the bottom side will not be seen so much :shifty:

So, let's start by plugging the air intakes and exhausts
Image

We apply a metallic base coat - added some diluted X-23 Clear Blue also because Im crazy and it's Monday :wtf:
Image

RAM topcoat using Gunze H337 - this time I got it right I think... ;)
Image

Mask application in progress...
Image

Upper side done - just need to mask the leading edge of the air intake lip
Image

Done!
Image

Bottom side sone also
Image

Back in Black!
Image

Next step will be to apply a marble coat - I have no idea how to do that in 1/144 scale   :shifty:

Yeah, it's coming along nicely. I hope to have the paintjob done during the coming weekdays and with some luck I might get decals done too. I'm waiting for the Begemot decal sheet to arrive.

I have chosen the a/c #82-1068 "Spirit of New York", so I will use decals for that individual.

Hey Guys,

I have spent a lot of time at bench yesterday and today thinking about the FS36118, i.e. Gunship Gray :P

Image

Image

Image

My conclusion:  :eeek: :bash: :wall:

My approach will be to start with blackbasing and marble coat and then use FS36118 as the blend-coat. Afterwards I might add postshading to adjust details. That's the plan.

So I start with the marble coat on the underside. I used highly diluted XF-80 for this and sprayed it at a low pressure, ~10 psi.
Image
The result was OK, but not what I had in mind. But it took me 3 hours so I will not redo it :shifty:

Next step was the blend-coat using Gunze H305
Image

After that I continued with the top side, I used XF-83 for this which is a little darker than XF-80.
Image

Image

Finished!
Image
Practice makes better (not perfect). I'm more happy with this...

I have also replaced the 1.5mm brass tube that I used as a pillar for the stand with a more sturdy 6mm acrylic rod. The brass tube was too flimsy ;)
Image

But the new 6mm hole in the base does not look so good...

But I was thinking of repainting the base anyway so I primed it again with Black Ultimate Primer...
Image

Right now I'm a bit stuck, because I need to have the decals to check the colours before I want to proceed with the top blend-coat and finalising the post-shading

Let's hope they arrive tomorrow!

No package from postie today

But life is too short to sit waiting for the postman to show up, so I decided to go ahead anyway!

So first I removed the masks from the underside and as I suspected the colour was too bright and light :shifty:
Image

So I applied a drak grey filter using highly diluted XF-24 (9:1 ratio)
Image

Image
That's better.

So next up is the upper side, which I am more concerned with since it will ofcourse be more visible ;)

Gunze H305 Gunship Grey
Image

Removed the masks - the RAM looks better on this side but if is still way too light.
Image

Image

So I applied the Grey filter here too.
Image

Next up is the exhausts
Image

Image

...and I fixed the stand - now it looks better!
Image

And that is where I am now - I will proceed with painting the exhaust heatshields tomorrow.

And hopefully the decals will show up

Only just caught up with this - Tommy this is amazing work!

I've been lucky enough to see the B-2 fly a couple of times and it just looks like something from a sci-fi movie - especially nose-on.

Don't know if this helps at all as a reference (probably a bit late now) but here's the one I saw last year

Thank you, Neil :D

Reference pictures are always welcome!

Speaking of reference pictures... I have been thinking a lot about how to recreate the heatstaining on the exhausts

Image

The best approach I can come up with to make a stencil to use as a guide - I don't trust my airbrushing skills enough to do this freehand... :bash:

Image

I made a couple of passes with XF-55 Deck Tan, XF-57 Buff and finally a thin stroke of XF-9 Hull Red and this is the result
Image

I'm very concerned of overdoing it, so I'll leave it like this I think :shifty:

Next up is gloss-coat to prepare for the decals - THAT WILL HOPEFULLY SHOW UP SOON  :pistols: :bash:

Sorry, for over-reacting

Hey Guys!

I'm preparing the model for the decals now, so I have started to put on the gloss-coat.

I'm using Gunze GX-100 thinned with Mr Color Levelling Thinner (ratio 1:3).
Image

So, I'm basically dead in the water right now until the decals show up :ooops:

Well well, there are other models to build meanwhile ;) :thumb1:

Yeah, I do too - but I think that I will make the deadline

Okay, started with the decals today and I got the underside finished.
Image

Image

And I started with the top side just to check the colour and everything seems OK

Was the decals worth waiting for ? The answer is best described with this clip

Hey Guys!

I have continued with the decals today.... there are a lot of them and they take some effort to align properly (I have to place the walkways in a certain order so they meet up correctly) - and the decal film is really thin :)

Image

Image

But the decals are really top notch! :thumb2:
I managed to wrinkle one of the walkways quite badly, but I just added a drop of water and fixed it with a toothpick.

Furthermore, I took the wrong walkway decals next to the refueling cap (on the top of the fuselage dorsal) and I had soaked it in Micro Sol already so it had set really well into the surface when I discovered my mistake... :o

But I just added some Micro Set and a lot of water and carefully lifted if from the surface using a soft brush. Both decals survived the transplant and I could move them.

I had silvering on a couple of places, but that was easy to fix using my ursual trick; puncture the carrier film using an needle and soak the decal with Micro Sol. After the surface have dried up a bit I press the decal with a piece of paper. This requires a bit of practice since it's easy to lift the decal or rip it.

:cheers2:

Hello!

I have continued to set the decals today.

Here's most of them done - just 54 NO STEP stencils left to do
Image

But after a while that was completed too ;)

And here's a shot on the stand.

I'll leave until tomorrow before I continue with the glosscoat and weathering.

I'm very pleased with the result sofar and the Begemot decals was a pure joy to work with.

Yeah the shape of the aircraft itself does not offer much detail and in 1/144 scale everything is so small anyway. But I have tried to add some variation to the surfaces using blackbasing technique and the decals. I will keep the weathering to a minimal, I think.

Just a short update ;)

I have put on two coats of GX-100 thinned with MrColor Leveling Thinner (1:1) ratio to seal the decals. I was a little bit worried about using too much MLT, since I have heard stories about laquer thinner "eating" decals :eeek:

Image

Can't praise the GX-100 (and MLT) enough - it seems to cure much faster than Tamiya X-22 :thumb1:

I will leave it for 24 hours now and after that I will continue with the weathering

Hey Guys!

Final leg of this build....

I did some very light weathering of the panellines with black oil. I also tried to smooth the heatstains on the exhausts a bit; first with pigments, but that didn't work at all, so I used gray oil which I drybrushed around the edges of the paint.
Image

Everything was coated with Micro Satin diluted with IPA to tone down the glare a bit.
Image

...and the windshield masks where removed...
Image

:wtf: :bash: :bash: :wall: :wall: :wall:

DISASTER!!! :eeek: For some reason the IP cover had collected a massive amount of dust :violin:

I have no idea how that happened, but the prime suspect is the Tamiya Putty - I normally only use spru goo to fill seams and that is rock hard on the inside but the Tamiya Putty is brittle... or maybe it's just dust that have been finding its way into the model somehow. It does not look like paint and the primer was black anyway....

So what now.....? :

I need to sleep on this - it might be possible to pry loose one of the bomb bay doors and drill a hole into the cocpit compartment and use compressed air to clean out the inside. Or I will just leave it as it is and put it at the back in my display cabinet

Anyway here's a couple of pictures. I will take better photos for the reveal later this week ;)
