Hasegawa 1/48 Kyushu J7W1 Shinden "Magnificent Lightning"

Post by TommyKillander »

Hey Guys!

Instead of running away to the local hobby store (or the Internet) and buy a new kit for this GB, I thought that I might take something from the stash. So I grabbed the J7W1 Shinden "Magnificent Lightning", since it fits the name criteria and is an awesome looking aircraft.

The kit

Background

The Kyūshū J7W1 Shinden (震電, "Magnificent Lightning") fighter was a World War II Japanese propeller-driven aircraft prototype with wings at the rear of the fuselage, a nose mounted canard, and pusher engine.

Developed by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) as a short-range, land-based interceptor, the J7W was a response to Boeing B-29 Superfortress raids on the Japanese home islands. For interception missions, the J7W was to be armed with four forward-firing 30 mm cannons in the nose.

The Shinden was expected to be a highly maneuverable interceptor, but only two prototypes were finished before the end of war. A jet engine–powered version was considered, but never even reached the drawing board.

Image

The construction of the first two prototypes started in earnest by June 1944, stress calculations were finished by January 1945, and the first prototype was completed in April 1945. The 2,130 hp Mitsubishi MK9D (Ha-43) radial engine and its supercharger were installed behind the cockpit and drove a six-bladed propeller via an extension shaft. Engine cooling was to be provided by long, narrow, obliquely mounted intakes on the side of the fuselage. It was this configuration that caused cooling problems while running the engine while it was still on the ground. This, together with the unavailability of some equipment parts postponed the first flight of the Shinden.

Image

Even before the first prototype took to the air, the Navy ordered the J7W1 into production,[9] with a quota of 30 Shinden a month given to Kyushu's Zasshonokuma factory and 120 from Nakajima's Handa plant. It was estimated some 1,086 Shinden could be produced between April 1946 and March 1947.

On 3 August 1945, the prototype first flew, with Tsuruno at the controls, from Itazuke Air Base. Two more short flights were made, a total of 45 minutes airborne, one each on the same days as the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki occurred, before the war's end. Flights were successful, but showed a marked torque pull to starboard (due to the powerful engine), some flutter of the propeller blades, and vibration in the extended drive shaft.

Image

The two prototypes were the only examples of the Shinden ever completed. After the end of the war, one was scrapped; the other was claimed by a U.S. Navy Technical Air Intelligence Unit in late 1945, dismantled, and shipped to the United States.

The sole surviving J7W1 was reassembled, but has never been flown in the United States; the USN transferred it to the Smithsonian Institution in 1960. Its forward fuselage is currently on display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center annex (at Dulles Airport) of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC.

Hey Guys,

Finally got some time this weekend to put the sprue-cutter into this kit :bash:

Starting with the cockpit. There's no aftermarket (AFAIK) for this kit so we will have to work with what we got here.
ImageIMG_20170527_093202 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

I decided to "spice up" the cockpit tub a little bit by scratchbuilding a radio. There are very few pictures available of this rare bird so I guess that my imagination has to fill in the missing parts
ImageIMG_20170527_124619 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

ImageIMG_20170527_132259 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

The cockpit is painted with XF-14 J.A Green and the seat is painted with XF-11 J.N. Green. Not the best choices, but on that later...
ImageIMG_20170527_163909 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

The Instrument Panel didn't have any decals for the dials and indicators, but showed some nice details so I decided to try to drybrush. First I painted it with XF-85 Rubber Black and then I drybrushed the surface with XF-19 Gray and I added some highlights to the edges with a few strokes of XF-2 White.
ImageIMG_20170527_171457 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

Assembly and glosscoating of the cockpit preparing for washes. I expected the cockpit tub colour to darken a bit, but it didn't. The seat on the other hand went almost black... :wall:
ImageIMG_20170527_171533 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

ImageIMG_20170527_171717 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

Applied Tamiya Black Panel Wash. I would probably got better results with an oilwash, but I didn't have that at hand.
ImageIMG_20170527_185551 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

I added a couple of drops of Tamiya X-22 Clear to make the meter show a little more
ImageIMG_20170527_215411 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

....and I remembered to add a noseweight - Yay! :thumb2:
ImageIMG_20170528_101212 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

The upper front plating with the 30 mm guns and and the canard wings... this aircraft had a really cool design 8-)
ImageIMG_20170528_110133 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

Next up is joining the fuselage halves.

My impression of the kit sofar is that it's a very old kit (tooling from circa 1988) with OK details, good at the time I guess. The fit seems really good.
But the fuselage and wings have raised panel lines - I didn't notice it until I started to build the kit actually
I will not sand down and rescribe the panellines, just saying! :wtf:

Anyway, with no aftermarket and raised panel-lines this will be a "retro-build" I guess

:cheers2:

That's a nice looking cockpit...working on those tiny details makes me cross-eyed so I'm always impressed when someone does them well.

I was planning to build it completely OOB, but I got all excited when I found a webpage with pictures of the rear cockpit compartment :P

Yeah, It's a pity that I can't understand the written text, but the pictures are nice.

Okey, had a nice friday night watching the Live stream - life could be worse
ImageIMG_20170609_201446 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr
I started to work the seams on the fuselage....

Well, things suddenly turned worse, when I sanded the seams of the fuselage. I tried to preserve the raised panellines by using a scalpel and slowly scraping the raised part of the seam (there where quite lot of flash on the edges). This caused some indentations in the plastic that I couldn't remove by sanding, so I had to fill it with some CA-glue and leave it overnight.
ImageIMG_20170609_222811 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

So I continued today and had some progress.
ImageIMG_20170610_232236 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr
I found out that the easiest way och dealing with the seams where to use a small diamond file to remove the raised part of the seam and then sand it down with a Ultimate thinny sponge sander and Ultimate buffing stick. The buffing stick is actually very good to use on a model with raised panellines - it doesn't remove any material from the raised panelline, it just polishes the surface :thumb2:

This is a tricky seam, I had to sacrifice some panellines to be able to sand that properly. It's not finished yet.
ImageIMG_20170610_232255 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

I also had a couple of soft glue-joints (the seam is lighter and does not disappear when you polish the surface). It's impossible to make it go away by sanding and polishing, no matter how much you try. The seam is weak and will erode, causing a visible cavity. I deal with this using CA-glue as a filler and sand and polish the seam again.
ImageIMG_20170610_232639 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr
I will leave it overnight to cure.

:cheers2:

Intresting looking plane
Can't say that i know it but i never been into Japanese planes (i know the Zero  )
It all looks a bit backwards with the engine in the back and the elevators up front
But at the same time it makes it looks cool
Keep up the good work

Thanks Tomcat64 :)

It's not a horrible kit, but dealing with the seams (and preserving the raised panel lines) are complicated and timeconsuming - but I'm OK with that since I'm not in a hurry.

I proceeded with cleaning up the small parts.
ImageIMG_20170616_172003 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

The spinner has an interesting eggshaped design. I need to clean up the seams between the spinner cone and the backplate.
ImageIMG_20170616_174835 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

It turned out nice I think. There is a small seam left, I haven't decided yet if I should fix those or let them be...

Hey Guys!

Got myself some time today at the bench after a fun but hectic weekend.

My plan was to assemble the wings and put them on the fuselage - but I managed to mess everything up by knocking the Tamiya Extra Thin bottle over and it poured under the wingsection on the cutting mat :eeek: :bash: :bash: :bash:   :wall: :wall:

ImageIMG_20170618_201229 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

The underside of the wing is lost - I will never be able to make that look good.... :( :violin:
ImageIMG_20170618_201251 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

ImageIMG_20170618_201937 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

Topside might be possible to salvage, or atleast do some damage-control.
ImageIMG_20170618_202008 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

I have been very careful not to touch any part that is soaked with TET, I'll just let it dry up for a week and after the styrene has hardened I will try to sand and polish the surfaces.

So, guys, temporary halt of this project for now. I won't bin it, but my plans for it have changed drastically...

I have primed the other parts with Ultimate Black primer and will continue with the detailpainting tomorrow.

Yeah, maybe it's a full moon thing or something similar... I *always* screw the cap on when I leave bottles at my desk (I have knocked over my MIcro Set/Sol bottles a couple of times), but this time I missed it.

Maybe I need to invest in one of these from Geek Design (local Swedish manufacturer)

I think I can make it look good enough - it's not completely ruined.
But I must admit that I lost a little bit of my mojo for the build.

I have continued with the undercarriage, while I wait for the wingsection to sober up....

ImageIMG_20170620_210002 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

I decided to use this circular cutter to make some mask roundels for the wheels.
ImageIMG_20170620_211659 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

It worked out OK, but I couldn't cut the smallest roundel, so I had to dig into my box of saved masks and decals. I never throw away anything that is left after I have completed a build

The result after spraying XF-85 - Not what I expected at all : :shifty:

So I had to touchup the rims using very diluted XF-85 (it should be like a wash). I just add a drop on the side of the tyre and it will flow along the edge and flood it. I then touchup the spots that are not covered properly.

Hey Guys!

Well... after leaving the wing to recover from the TET Offensive a week ago, I have started to carefully sand the destroyed surfaces with my CMK and Ultimate sanding sticks. I was possible to even out the roughness on the top side, without losing too much of the details.
ImageIMG_20170622_201652 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

I polished the surfaces with a Ultimate buffing stick.
ImageIMG_20170622_201958 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

Bottom side was another story, though... But I won't loose my sleep over this; shite happens - just cope with it.
ImageIMG_20170622_205049 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

Mating of the wingsection and the fuselage went without any problems at all. It's a small seam on the bottomside, but that is easy to fix.
ImageIMG_20170623_112556 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

It's just the vertical stabilisers and the airscoops left to assemble and after that it's Primer Time :thumb2:

Hey Guys!

I have continued with the assembly today.

After bending the pitot tube a couple of times I decided to remove it from the wing. I will scratchbuild a new one and put that on after I have done all the sanding and buffing of the seams.

ImageIMG_20170624_102246 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

The vertical fins have a surprisingly bad fit - up to now everything have been really good (in terms of fitting of the parts). I use a strip of styrene to fill the gaps and I will sand and fill the seams on the topside after the glue have set complete. The bottom side on the other hand, well.... let's not talk about that.

Hey Tommy, no need to talk about it as well, the same happened to me last week with my wing and a bottle that tipped on to it as well all over my Scifi SIG naboo starfighter, the same as you aarrggggg! I would say check it out, but no need to make you feel as bad as I do. I kind of just started but was doing a bit of LED design, that was part of that wing. Well done to continue your effort tho! It does knock us down with mojo, but its how we make it better and yours is looking very nice. I think your helping my mojo as well knowing we are not alone. I will watch :pop: because it is really coming out so cool and what an amazing plane your building. I never heard of the Magnificent Lightning. Ive read this entire thread too! :thumb2:

Thanks Tony :)

I think that we are definately not alone spilling glue :D

I was lucky that most of the damage where on the botton side of the wing, so I decided to keep on going to complete the build. But I have learnt to double-check that the screwcap on the glue bottle is tightened between every time I use it

I will probably buy the Zoukei-Mura 1/48 Shinden kit (or maybe the 1/32  ) and build this model again, because I think it's such a beautiful and strange looking aircraft.

Hello!

I've been sanding and buffing every seam now on the aircraft and it is starting to look presentable.

I feel that it's time to close up the cockpit and prepare for paint....

First I scratchbuild the glass for the gunsight using a piece of PET plastic. I have a collection of different sizes that I have "harvested" from different blisterpacks and other transparent packaging material.

Masking of the canopies. Instead of using a sharp hobbyknife to route around the edges I decided try a new method (well... it's new to me!)

I use strips of maskingtape and leave out the rounded edges.

ImageIMG_20170626_214216 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

I use small dots of Maskol to fill the corners. It will be interesting to see if this works....

Yes, it's a quite unusual look aircraft, it doesn't look like a 1940's design...

I will use an ink-pen to add detail to the guns, I think.

Awwright... I have scratchbuilt the pitot-tube using a 0.75 mm styrene rod and a short piece of guitarstring.

Thanks Scott!

Since I'm a lazy Son of a Beach I try to get masking sets for my builds - in most cases they include masks for wheels. The trick with the "wash" is great to get a nice hard edge around the tires, ofcourse given that there's a protruding rim that separates the hub and the tire :)

I got the suggestion use die-cut "dots" of masking tape for the corners, but I didn't have the right tool for that.

Did some painting today.

First the metal colour for the engine. I decided to use a darker metaltone so I grabbed the Vallejo Duraluminium from the paint-rack.
ImageIMG_20170628_204508 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

After that it did the characteristic yellow/orange ident markings on the leading edges of the wing and propeller blades.

First I put on a pink base (XF-2 White + a couple drops of XF-7 Red).
ImageIMG_20170628_205647 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

After that I coat it with XF-3 Yellow.
ImageIMG_20170628_210925 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

Last step it to mix 90% thinner and 10% X-26 Clear Orange and spray that on top of the yellow. Thin layers until the yellow gets a tint of Orange.
ImageIMG_20170628_212923 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

I'll leave that to dry overnight and I will mask the yellow stripes tomorrow. I'm happy with the progress this week :thumb2:

The prototype had some issues with torque pull, due to the powerful engine and the 6 blade prop during its maiden flight. This thing could shift some air!

Thanks Scott, I'm happy that you find it useful.

I make a "near-full" strip of the airbrush between each paint. Take off the nozzle and needle, clean everything with a papertowel, cotton bud and airbrush cleaner. I have done it so many times now that it's done within 2 minutes using a minimum of ABC. Before that I had a couple of incidents with bad spraypattern and clogged nozzle due to dried paint residue.
I hate stuff like that, so now I always clean the airbrush thoroughly. I don't care if it's a bit OCD, I need to be sure that my tools work properly :D

Yes, I was lucky that only the bottom side of the wing was affected, also the Hasegawa styrene was good quality and didn't erode so much. But if you look at the pictures the bottom side was completely soaked and the surface was like jelly :eeek: :o

Okey...

After having a fit over the latest shenanigans of Photobucket yesterday I have calmed down now..... :D

I have switched all the the pictures in this thread over to Flickr and I'm all set for continuing, so here we go!

The prop have been masked; it has a yellow tip on the back and just a yellow band on the front.
ImageIMG_20170629_211459 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

Since I'm going to have a go at blackbasing, I have covered the yellow overspray with Black XF-1
ImageIMG_20170629_215024 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

ImageIMG_20170629_194046 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

So here we go.... I'm starting with the prop and the landinggear doors....
ImageIMG_20170629_225546 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

After that I coated the prop with higly diluted (1:9 ratio) of XF-9 and thinner
ImageIMG_20170629_231225 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

ImageIMG_20170629_231713 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

I'm not sure what to say about this.... When building up the paintlayers with thin coats of paint the prop looked like crap... :( :shifty: And I basically had to lose all transparency to make it look decent... So I dont know.... :?

After spending a day trying to analyse this I came to the conclusion that I probably didn't marble-coat properly: :geek:

- The surface should be grey with a random pattern of darker grey and black, not the opposite.
- Also grey marble-coat will obvioulsy work better with grey topcoat.
- If I want to add variation I should probably have used yellow and possibly red mottling over the marble coat for the prop.

...so my approach for the rest of the build will be to use marble coat on the IJN Grey bottom side and I might skip it on the topside and use post panelshading instead.

Oh its looking really nice Tommy. Yea I was on PB for a short while and switched to Flicker very fast. Seems so much better and the post text is easy to get rid of fast when you get used to it.

As far as (OUR) glue spills. I made a small holder with sprues (keep in mind I did this twice) and this little sprue contraption has saved me for a while now.

Image

It was easy to build, I just picked a 3 to 4 inch square from my sprue collection, then put 4 walls around it. the square walls were about 1-1.5 inches high and thats it. Very hard to tip over. Used testers tube glue for strength. Extra Thin glues does not work well as can be imagined. Took me just a few minutes to do. Let it dry tho for a day or more.

That prop tho is coming out so great. Your kit is as well, such an interesting bird. :thumb2:

Thanks Tony, but I have actually ordered the laser-cut bottle-stand I showed earlier in the thread

Ok, I had a new go at the black-basing thing again... I have decided only to use this technique on the underside of the aircraft - if I fail totally it's not the end of the world...

ImageIMG_20170701_204423 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

ImageIMG_20170701_205512 by Tommy Killander, on Flickr

That took nearly three hours(!)

I ended up using higly diluted XF-19 for the blend coat (~9:1) thinner paint ratio.

I have no idea how this will look...:

I will leave this overnight so the paint fully cures and tomorrow I will mask the underside and paint the topside. My plan is to use XF-70 for that.

Maybe I'm overly anixious about it, since it's the first time I try it :shifty:

I have studied a couple of black-basing How-Tos and it seems that I'm not too far away from what I see there.

I reckon that glosscoat, different types of weathering and flatcoat will have great impact on the final outcome. This shouldn't be an exception.

Thanks DrSprue - yeah it must have been an awesome experience, this short film-clip doesn't have any original sound, but I love how the factory personell basically carries it out to the airfield on their hands. It's like a Miyazaki movie :D
