1/48 Special Hobby Fokker D XXI

Post by JonMW »

My plan for this GB is to do a Fokker D XXI in Finnish winter camouflage. This year it's 100 years since the Finnish independence, so I thought it be fitting to do a Finnish build.

Probably time to actually do an update on this. I haven't been working too much on this, it has some fit problems so it has taken some time to get the internal frame together and straight. And the instructions isn't the most helpful.

Image

But I got there in the end. I found some actual drawings of the Fokker D XXI that I printed to scale and could use to tweak the frame to the right shape.

Next the cockpit was painted in a light grey, detail painted all the details and then finally gave it a dark brown oil wash.

Now it's just a matter of getting the fuselage halves together, which will need a bit of clamping and probably some filler.

I have to admit I didn't even know this plane existed until I saw this thread!

Great work on the fiddly framework Jon - that could so easily have ended up twisted in all sorts of ways.

Look forward to seeing this unusual subject develop now :pop:
Cheers, Neil

This thing has been fighting my all the way, it really isn't the best kit. The wing roots needed a lot of filler and sanding and the canopy is too narrow (or I put too much stuff in the cockpit). So I heated the canopy and spread it a bit to make it fit better, still not perfect.

Then I saw that the canopy isn't really centered on the fuselage.

But right I just want to get this done, so I spent some time and got it painted in XF-13, MR Paints Viggen black, MR Paints Light gull grey and XF-3. Still not sure what to use for the winter camo, so will have to think about that.

Thanks!

I've had a bit of a push to get this done before the deadline. I had a bit of a set back and had to repaint part of the camo as the winter camo turned out crap. But got that done and then added the decals.

Got the reset of the parts attached.
