Airfix 1/48 Spitfire PR.XIX S31

Post by JonMW »

When I saw that this kit came with Swedish decals I thought it would be a nice entry to this SIG. The kit looks nice with some nice details, also picked up a PE set for the cockpit from Maestro Models.

Have started working on this, it's a really nice kit with good detail and fit. First thing I did was to cut out the hatches for the camera compartment as I plan to have them open.

Started working on the cockpit next, most of the molded in details where removed using a chisel. Also started to add some of the PE parts.

Image

With the cockpit painted and the rest of the PE attached I dry brushed a bit of silver to add a bit of ware.

Finally I added a wash using MIG 502 engine oil, oil paint.

Got the fuselage and wings together, fit is pretty good, the wing leading edges didn't need any filler at all and the fuselage didn't need that much.

Thanks!

Have gotten some paint and the decals on, used Vallejo PRU blue followed by Aqua gloss. The decals went on without any problems.

Have also started working on a few other bits and pieces like the exhaust. Started by marking the center of each pipe using an old airbrush needle as a center punch. Then used three different size drills to enlarge the hole and thin the walls.

Final update on this. Have added a dark dirt wash and flat coated everything in Model Master acrylic flat.

The canopy on this kit is not the best, there is a bit of distortion and if you want to display it with open canopy you need to cut of a bit of the fuselage and use a really thick part with even worse distortion. The problem is that the center part is too thick and you can't place it in the open position. To solve this I vacuum formed a copy of the center part. First I used some clay to make a block for the canopy to sit on, this way it's easier to get sharp edges on the vacuum formed part. Then it's just a matter of heating the plastic sheet, placing it on the vacuum form machine (small box) and turning it on (vacuum cleaner). Cut out and paint, turned out pretty well.

Have also added an oil dot filter using Mig Faded navy blue and Faded UN white. First just dampen the surface with odorless turpanoid, then adding a bunch of dots and finally using a damp brush streaking it in the direction of travel.

Cool casting and a beauty of a build. I keep trying the oil dot filter but, sadly, no success.

:cheers2:
