My Visit to RAF Museum, Hendon, London on 11.30.14

Post by UKguyInUSA »

Hey guys,

During my last day in the UK, I visited the RAF Museum Hendon, London last Sunday, November 30th, before flying back to the states on Monday night.

Here's a slide show video of all the photos that I took whilst there. I hope it serves for good reference for anyone making models of any of the aircraft depicted within.

In the late 70s I lived close enough (44 Waverley Grove) that I could ride my bike over there. After a visit with my Grandfather I always got in for free, Granddad had flown a couple of different planes in WW2 and they let him hop into some of his old chariots.
They used to have huge (4' x 8'?) dioramas in 1/72 of WW1 desert scenes with armoured cars.

Many thanks for these Martin, really nice set. Hendon is up the tube line from me but I don't go often enough. Always love it when I do. Great that the Sunderland now has a big glass wall bringing light in. Shame the Vulcan still has to sit like a naughty school child facing the corner. But its probably the only way it could fit!
What strikes me, though, is how faint those panel lines are on many full scale examples. I wonder, should I become a volunteer and help out, with a bucket of white spirit and a tub of burnt umber? Or maybe that's how they should be...

And the Graham White Hangar full of WW1 and earlier is great too.

Cheers :cheers2:

Hello Forbes, when I last visited the museum as a teenager, I remember the large dioramas, along with a great gift shop with lots of models in it. Both of those memories were no long present within the museum, but, the admission is free now, like most museums in the UK.

What did your Grandad fly in WW2?

Cheers, :cheers2:

Hey Will, thanks for watching and glad that you liked it and you're welcome for the time I put into it. I'm a retired Engineer now, and I enjoy making models and videos to fill my free time. :)

Sweet! Both beautiful planes and both important role players in WWII. If I had to pick one out of the two to fly as a WWII Pilot, it would have to be the Mossie.

I'm grateful for your Grandad's service, bravery and courage to his country :) :thumb1: :thumb1:
