Hobby Boss 1/48 F-105G Thunderchief

Post by Willem »

A quick kit review.

Nice bit of box art, with a 105G on overwatch while a pair of 105Ds peel off to hit a target.

Image

Age 14+ yep, check. Actual model may vary from image on box- Hope not, I'd be annoyed if there's a Stuka inside.

Image

Couple of schemes on the box sides.

The instructions fold out into one long, double-sided sheet and look pretty detailed with colour call-outs if a little bit busy.

Sprue map at the back.

A full colour paint instruction for the two schemes illustrated on the box sides.

On to the plastic. Eight sprues of light grey styrene and one clear sprue in a separate bag.

Image

Main fuselage parts. Lovely engraved detail with lots of rivets. This will build into a big bruiser of a model.

Image

Clear parts are very clear with good raised frame details.

You get the full engine in the kit so lots of options to super detail and display.

Decals, often a bit of a let down on these kits. These look a bit thick and shiny to me especially on the stars and bars and the blue looks too pale. All decals are in register. The stencils aren't really legible at this scale but there are lots of them and you get decals for the cockpit instrument panels should you want to use them.

Looks like a nice kit to me. There are options to display the engine, radome open, gun bay open, re-fuelling probe etc. I'm a bit wary of the decals and I'll probably look for some aftermarket but that's just my opinion. Think I paid about £26 for this kit so lots of plastic for the money.

So, hope this review helps someone who may fancy a classic American jet. This kit now goes back in to the stash ready for September's Vietnam GB. Looking forward to building it. :th:

Looks like a nice kit, mate....particularly impressed with the mini paint conversions chart providing alternative manufacturers color numbers!

Nice kit - I've built one before. The main issue is the rear fuselage joint - it's a simple butt joint, which kept springing apart, so if you are not showing the engine i would strengthen the joint with some sprue next time.

Thanks for the advice. I'll watch out for that when I build it.
