Hobby Boss 1/48 P-38L-5-LO

After a 35 year hiatus, returned to scale model building in November 2013. Mostly military aircraft kits, the F-14, F-16, and Harrier series being my favorite jets, along with the F4U Corsair, and the A6M Zero variants for piston aircraft. Other scale model interests include Star Trek, BSG, and sailing ships. When I returned to modeling, I watched many, many, many modeling video out there getting back up to speed. I started posting videos of my builds as a way to give back to the modeling community. Hope you enjoy the subjects presented and derive some enjoyment and knowledge from them. Thank you.

Hobby Boss 1/48 P-38L-5-LO

Post by TonyCnyc »

Hello all,

My recent build of the Hobby Boss 1/48 P-38L-5-LO "Easy Assembly Authentic Kit".

Lives up to it's moniker as an easy build. Very nice details and great fit overall.

Only fit related issue I had was the seam between the top and bottom. There is no gap, but will need some sanding/polishing to smooth out the transition, and maybe a little bit of re-scribing. Nothing serious, but if HobbyBoss had made the break along the panel lines it would have been a much better way to go in my opinion.

Can't speak to the kit's accuracy. I'll leave that to others more in the know about P-38s. A couple things I did noticed: 1) the leading edge wing landing lights are modeled solid with the rest of the wing; should have been at least a clear part for it. 2) main landing gear tires have wrong thread.

Some of the color call outs and decals are questionable or incorrect. Definitely check your references on those. The decals themselves laid down beautifully and conformed nicely to the surface details, with no silvering.

For 20-something US I would recommend this kit. Some of the issues can be easily adjusted with some scratch building and aftermarket decals. Also a good kit out-of-the-box for those new or returning to scale modeling. Others may prefer a kit with more options (visible engine, gun bay, positionable flaps, for example), or more accurate shape/details for their particular P-38 they want to model.

Thanks for watching.
