Airbrush spray booth

Post by bobbewieter »

Hi there,

Just wondering if any of you guys have some experience in building your own spraybooth???

The ones you buy look rather expensive to be honest.

Any tips or stories etc are more than welcome

Greets,
Bob

Hi Bob,

I purchased a cheap spray booth and have had it for 8 months and it's served me very well - http://www.airbrushheaven.co.uk/product ... uct_id=658

I agree some can be very expensive but this one was really cheap and I've had no issues. It's ideal for me as I have limited space.

Also, the service I've received from this company has been first rate every time.

Hope this helps,

Pete.

I bought one - but
i saw somewhere how one had been build
they used a large storage box
cut a hole in the base to house an extractor fan from an old cooker hood and vented it to the outside
i think they used a cooker hood filter - seemed to work well

I bought one off ebay, but I could have easily made one for less than half the price.

I built my spray booth. Well, actually two. The first one is out of cardboard box and using 4 CPU fans to draw out air. That didn't last long since it is so humid here. The box soon disintegrated. The one I'm currently using is simply a big plastic storage box. For the fan I chose a squirrel cage kitchen fan just to be on the safer side that the fume won't explode. I cut the mounting hole on side of the storage box so that the box can act like a downdraft booth (downdraft requires less power than side draft). At first I also mounted some LED strips to provide the lighting. However, due to the lack of metal cooling plate, the LED modules soon burnt out. So I found some ultra slim panel lights with build-in cooling plate to mount on it. At the back of the side I also pasted a strip of Velcro tape so that I can tape a backdrop paper on it.

So, my spray booth can act as 1: a spray booth, 2: close the cover after finish as a drying box and 3: as a photo booth with backdrop paper.

Sorry about the big pictures. I'm still trying to figure out how to post pictures from google+....

v2.1: With LED strip, you can actually see part of the fan and the hose at the bottom of the picture. But it didn't work out fine since the LED was burnt out and the glue doesn't stick to the side of the box too well (also due to the heat of the LED)

As a photo booth:

Four panel lights on three different switches to control the lighting level. I built the light frame out of acrylic boards.

check out BadGrendels and ModelManTom on Youtube
They have both built very good size spray booths and the videos give some really good tips, even if you are building smaller.

There are some questions you have to ask yourself.
For the price of 2 or 3 kits you can get one of the 'portable' spray booths which work well, how valuable is your time building one?
If you want uber cheap then a box with a pc fan and some ducting is about as cheap as you can get.
What size do you want the booth, your largest subject plus a bit more.
Do you spray acrylics, lacquers, enamels? as the more toxic paints mean you will it to be more efficient
How far do you have to run ducting as that can change the effectiveness of the booth

hope that's not to much info but as you may have guessed ive been thinking about building one and the amount of info out there is overwhelming sometimes

Hey Bob;
Yes, I just built one out of 1/4" plywood I had in the garage. The only thing I bought was the bath fan. May have to upgrade that tho to a higher CFM. I did find an old range hood fan that I may try to install in it some way or another. I used more plywood to replace a basement window and put a dryer vent in there for venting..
No one said it would be easy, only that it would be worth it..

I bought a second hand hood that's suppose to go over a stove in a kitchen. Cost me 10 euro's.
Placed it on its side on my workbench, so with the bottom facing you. Placed some some plates off white MDF on the side and above, creating a booth. Put a hose on it and hang that out the window when painting. Later I want to make a hole in the wall for the hose, is a bit nicer in winter and when it's raining..

Here you can see it in the back, sorry no decent photo.

It has 2 engines and 4 different speeds, so you can adjust it to your needs. Even has light in it.

So, 10 euro's for the hood, maybe 15 euro's for the MDF and some screws.
Oh, and i put the lighting against the "roof" off the booth.
