To give my eyes some rest from the PE works on my Churchill AVRE, I decided to enter a second entry.
These figures are given to me a while ago by a fiend of my in NYC. Thanks Dave
The figures are awesome, and great detailed. One of the figures is holding a "Bangalore" witch had a important role on the beaches of Normandy. I will tell more about that later.

The box with the barricade set was in my stash forever, so this would be thee perfect time to use it.

This kit comes with a small decal sheet. Need to figure out what markings to use.

I'm planning a small vignette of the beach. The shore line to precise. Well... that is if the water effects will work.
It's going to be max 10x13 cm....

Yeah... the water will be a challenge indeed...
But I did some practice and it will be a shore, not a whole sea so maybe I can pull it of this time!

I think it will all be seen in the faces of the figures.. Painting them right is crucial.
But no blood gore tho.. I know the water was turned red from all blood, but that's a no for me.

Update 1

Hi guys, and welcome to the first update of this "Ohama beach" vignette.
I'm planning a shore line for this vignette, something like this:

First things first, the figures.
These guys need a lot of cleaning up, but nothing to bad.
Just the usual seems and flash.
I started to pin the heads. Normally I would do that for making it easier to paint the heads, but this time it's for making sure the heads stay on. Huge gap where the neck would be, so filling required.

The "Bangalore" guy needs to carry that long thing, but the position of the arm and hand is of.

Some info about the "Bangalore:

A Bangalore torpedo is an explosive charge placed within one or several connected tubes. It is used by combat engineers to clear obstacles that would otherwise require them to approach directly, possibly under fire. It is sometimes colloquially referred to as a Bangalore mine, bangers or simply Bangalore.

It has been estimated that the modern Bangalore torpedo is effective for clearing a path through wire and mines up to 15 m (49 ft) long and 1 m (3 ft 3 in) wide.

Per US Army FM 5-250 section 1-14, page 1-12 "b. Use. The primary use of the torpedo is clearing paths through wire obstacles and heavy undergrowth. It will clear a 3- to 4-metre wide path through wire obstacles."

This is the original position of the arm..
He would drop it for sure!

So with a candle I heated up his arm, and bend it in the correct position.
Down side is a huge gap at the back of his arm.

Liquid putty took care of that.

Now he will not drop the "Bangalore" anymore.

All figures cleaned, assembled, filled and sanded.
The poses of these guys are amazing... just like the box art!

Better view..

Now, while the figures are waiting to be primed, I made a start at the vignette..
I'm going to use this nice piece of wood.

Sanded, and gave it 3 layers of antique stain.
Toped it of with a 4 coat of floor wax (future)

Masked of the Beach, time to get messy

A nice wood glue glazing... easy for a ex Bakker... lol

Added the beach sand. ( play sand with some beach sand piment)

Diluted wood glue with a drop of dishwasher soap. The soap is for making it easier to let the glue flow into the sand.
If not used, the glue will float on top of the sand for a while.

And applied it on the sand.

All being wet, I brushed in the wrinkles in the sand that would be left in the sand on the shore line by waves.

Putted the anti tank barrier on top, to see how it would look.

Speaking of such, primed the anti tank barrier or "hemmbalk" black.

Painted it dark brown, and with the paint still wet, applied old rust pigment.

Applied 2 more rust pigments, (standart rust and fresh rust) and soaked it with rust streaks.

And here it is on it's place...

That would wrap it up for now guys!

This little vignette can be emotional.
I'm trying to paint emotion in the faces of the figures (witch is a pain) and i'm keeping this vignette simple.
It will tell the story of the massacre that happened on those beaches...
The water turned red, and those poor guys lost a lot of friends...

I'm hoping to reveal this vignette june 6th, but I can't promise that..

Thank you for all great comments guys, it makes me want to turn this vignette into a gem. I hope...

Figure painting time!
Everybody has it's own way of painting figures, his own style.
So do I, and I'm not going to make this a long story about my figure painting.

Let's start with the faces...

I always start with the eyes.
I paint white with a drop of sunny skintone for getting a of white.

Then I paint a Dark brown line on the face to help me place the eyes straight.
They kinda look like a kiss lookalike now...

Then I paint the iris and pop in the pupil.
The eye lids were paint a slightly darker at the top, and the lower eye lids are painted lighter.

The faces received dark lines for the shadows, and light lines for the high lights. (top of the nose, cheek bones)
All faces are painted now.

And I made a start at base colouring the uniforms.

The flamethrower received a upgrade from copper wire. I cut of the plastic fuel lines.

Time to make the gun slings.
My way, easy way

I use masking tape.
Paint it in the colour I desire,
Fold it double,
Cut it at the size I want,
Apply it to the gun..

All figures painted.
These figures do have great poses, but were a bit low on detail, so I tried to paint them the best I could.

Now, I did had some decals with division markings, and I have chosen for The 1st Infantry Division.

The 1st Infantry Division of the United States Army is the oldest division in the United States Army. It has seen continuous service since its organization in 1917. It was officially nicknamed the The Big Red One after its shoulder patch and is also nicknamed The Fighting First. However, the division has also received troop monikers of The Big Dead One and The Bloody First as puns on the respective officially-sanctioned nicknames. They stormed the beaches on D-day June 6th 1944. It is currently based at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Decals added..

Now back to the beach!

After the sand dried completely, I applied a amount of Vallejo still water.
Just enough to make the sand "wet"

I practice some waves from Vallejo water effects on a piece of glass..

I coloured a bit of water effects with artic blue and green, this will be the shore line.
Also I drilled holes in the base for the figures.
I have to do that now, for some figures will be standing in the water, and I can not drill holes in the water later.

Now the hard part, and scary part...
Applying the waves with Vallejo water effects...
I just used a popsicle stick for this task.
I tried to make a rising water effect, like the water really comes on shore.
It's white now, it will dry up clear. Then I need to make the white foam on top of the waves...

Excellent, Frans. For such a simple piece, its going to be very atmospheric. The expressions on the faces are perfect. A cross between "Right! Here we go!" and "Oh crap! Here we go!"

I learned a couple of things from this thread already, apart from you being a master modeler, those being;

1) How to paint eyes on figures, starting with the eyes first then working outwards from there. Makes so much sense than the way that I would have done this, which would have been to paint the face first followed by the eyes last.

2) That you can buy "Water Effects" product to create those realistic waves forms with, including the "frothy sudsy falling onto the beach foamy stuff".

Hello, And welcome to my final update of this build!
Final? Already?
Yes... This was a small build, and I wanted to keep it simple.
Just to show that you can make a great scene with a few figures and a prop.

So lets start with finishing the water shall we?

With the Vallejo water effects being dry now, I made a start at the water foam that's often been seen on the shore line.
I use for this task Vallejo snow and foam.

First I did dry brush the shore line with some white paint.

Then, with a stiff brush and sponge I applied the foam. I did not covered the water completely with foam, I let the water shine trough for I thought that would be more realistic. I did not brushed it on, I put small dots on it.

At the beginning of the shore, I applied a few layers of foam to get a bit more depth.

Some foam on this guys boots applied. I also took Vallejo still water, and brushed it on the platoons boots for a wet look.

I'm happy with the outcome of the shore line. It's the first time i'm using this technique, so no complaints so far!

From above the water is clearly visible.

And that rounds up his final update guys!
I'm not going to reveal it just yet.
I've got some final touch ups to do, and then I will go over to the reveal section.

But I can promise you that this little vignette will be released on June 6th!
I thought it would be a great Idea to reveal this vignette on D-day 70 years later to remember one of the most audacious and heroic wartime operations in the 20th century. All 156,000 Allied soldiers that made liberation of Europe possible.

So I will see you guys June 6th in the evening for my reveal
