DIY Spray Booth.

Post by ChubberLang »

I have been reading about DIY spray booths catching fire/exploading etc. Wanna know what you fine chaps think about it?

I know maybe some of you guys may have a graphic air or others but my budget is quite tight for that bit of kit with everything else I need for the hobby, airbrush etc.

By trade im an appliance engineer and recently replaced a cooker hood for a customer. I took his old cooker hood away which works and I have striped it down to clean. Thats as far as I have gone then I hear these stories flying around so not sure what to do. I don't know what type of motor it has as of yet. I wanna make it work buy if its a risk then i'll give it a miss.

Thanks guys! :thumb1:

A DIY spray extractor needed to have a shielded (I think) motor so the flammable vapours don't ignite.

That spray booth linked is,ok for the money,I had one before the graphic air, but it's only ok and I wouldn't recommend it for cellulose based paints. You will also still need to wear a respirator as it only removes some of the particles not the fumes themselves.

Before you ever reach ""Explosion Atmosphere"". in your DiY spray-booth! You will have to be a very unlucky person! And use very flammable products! (EA) is only reached with a very specific amount of oxygen and Atomised flammable product. Actually harder to do than said!

I used Lacquers and Acrylics in mine no problem! I don't have an external motor
Like mentioned above cuz they are pricey! I just used a normal "high CFM" bathroom Fan and so far so good! :thumb2: it works for me! Emphasis on (for me)

Don't read too much into it or you will never build it! Unless you are going to use extremely volatile stuff like Gasoline to clean your paint brush ? I wouldn't do that ! Normal thinners and cleaners should be fine! And please don't spray directly into the fan! If you have an exposed motor Brushes.

just use common sense and have Fun! But remain safe!

For the longest time (because I lived in an apartment) I just used empty kit boxes to build a hood then had standard 4" dryer hose connected to the top with a clothes pin. The hose ran to a multi-speed window fan the pulled everything outside. It worked great for what I needed it to do. I don't use enamels or flammable solvents in any of my work so the fan catching fire isn't really an issue. I still inspected it once or twice a month to see if anything hookey was going on.

This isn't the best picture of one of the hoods but it's a rough idea.
The white blocks that are in it are just pieces of styrofoam and have nothing to do with the hood.

I currently have a plastic storage box about 2 1/2' by 2' that I'm planning on fitting an extractor to. I only use acrylics too.

I was thinking of doing something similar. Any idea what volume of air the fan needs to move to handle airbrush and also spray cans.......
