2022 Group Build Subject Suggestions

Post by Tomcat64 »

Following on from @Twokidsnosleep's Friday questions about Group Builds we thought we'd open up the thread for next year's suggested subjects while the subject is still fresh in our minds.

So as usual please feel free to suggest any subjects you'd like to be considered for GBs or SIGs and we'll then put up a poll of those that generate the most interest.

We'd also be interested in knowing how long you think the ideal GB/SiG should run for.

:cheers2:
Cheers, Neil

I'll wade in with a couple of suggestions to start with
  • 2022 is the 40th Anniversary of the Falklands conflict so maybe something around that - I guess this would be primarily aircraft or maritime builds
  • I mentioned in the Friday question thread about the possibility of a 1/48 build - although that may be too broad
  • And I'll also throw in my regular suggestion of a Scandinavian theme
Cheers, Neil

A few ideas I've had:
  • Anything from the Vietnam war.
  • A vignette or diorama with only figures.
  • Anything Italian

I'd go with Rob's suggestion of the Vietnam war and even the Korean conflict which gets even less attention than Vietnam.
WW2 any countries except the main players so USA,British,Russian and German are excluded.
WW1 build

Love a few of the suggestions

here are the ones I like :
- anything Italian as it's original and could bring anything from airplanes to cars.
- something from the Faklands wars as it's being the anniversary it's good idea I think.
- Scandinavian subject, again it would be bring a large inventory of things to do from rally race cars, to Finnish planes with German markings and armored vehicles.
- vietnam war
- korean war, because as said it doesn't get much attention

How about a "Dirty" theme? You can build whatever you like, BUT it has to be weathered. I would love to see some realistically weathered cars or trucks.

How about combining the two to expand the available subjects? Or even throw in the South East Asia theatre from WW2 if we wanted to widen it further?

One more from me
  • Military Support - so basically unarmed military transport, reconnaissance, recovery etc. Could be ground, air or maritime from any period

Scorpion tanks were involved in the fighting on the Falklands, and Black Dog makes a couple of 1/35 Royal Marine figures kitted for the Falklands.

Maybe stretch things a bit and let the car guys in too - include black Porsche 928S4's if they have "H982 FLK" as the license plates. (Top Gear reference).

Some nice themes already mentioned.
How about:
* An Inter-war theme - anything you like that flies, rolls or floats as long as it dates after 1918 and before 1939.
* Cold War Naval - should stretch everyone
* Science Fantasy - pretty wide open field.
* Another "Out of comfort zone" - only criteria is you build what you normally don't. I liked the poll idea where others vote for what you build, appealed to my (admittedly warped) sense of humour!

I like the idea of a set scale too. Be interesting to see what we go with. :D

it's True that focusing on a battle or event is a great subject with the narrative to it. It adds to an end with the subject at hand and what you want with it.

    - automotive (any scale, period/year, civilian, military, racer, etc.)

    - think small (1/144 or smaller model)

    - space travel (real or science fiction)

    - figures (two or more any scale or period)

    - rotor wing (anything helicopter)

    - open wheel (anything without fenders or enclosures: F1, F2, F3000, Indy, midgets, dirt buggy, military, etc.)

And the last one would be any yellow French observation balloon used in the first world war that was active during the second offensive and survived an arial attack, in 1/35 through 1/78 scale with full armament and figures. I hope this wasn't too specific......

I am all in on the idea of a Korean war. That really isn't covered very often.

Vietnam would be great but that's done fairly often.

I think a Century series build would be awesome.

Here's one I don't think i have seen.. Any aircraft but it has to be 1/32 or larger.

Many themes are suggested, i will be interesting by those :

    - Falklands/Malvinas : good subject, s a french i would build some argentinian planes ... even some british ones! :nena:
    - VietNam/Korea : a good idea too, during Korea conflict most of the vehicles (ground and aircraft) were from WW2 so very easy to deal with
    - Helicopter : i have some kits so yes!
    - Naval theme : so sulked, however there is such excellent kits on the market WW2 or modern, that'll be a challenge and a great out of comfort zone subject!

Great ideas there mate - was also wondering about throwing the Battle of the Bulge into the mix as well but I think D-Day offers more scope for subjects in Land, Air & Sea.

Oh cool - there's actually quite a range of aircraft that would qualify on both sides :th:

I'd be happy to try that again in 1/48 if there's enough interest so please let us know on this one as well.

that's a great idea because it really let's time to finish it without any stress and doesn't let other things In life get in the way. And to get stuff for the model at hand or get one to get in if it's a subject that's really interesting but don't have the kit in your stash

I'm kinda liking the idea of an open time build(s) for the year. It just may take threads away from the regular build threads and put them in the group build section though. I guess what I really like is reading build threads as they progress more than anything.

Cannot get much more open and general a topic than those
Have given this a bit more thought and wondering if we could maybe include more than one manufacturer to open things up a bit.

For example anything from Meng, Takom or ICM as some of the newer kids on the block?

How about combining the two to expand the available subjects? Or even throw in the South East Asia theatre from WW2 if we wanted to widen it further?
I've been thinking about this one as well and instead of including the WW2 theatre maybe have a GB for those conflicts that are generally less well served in modelling terms?

      So Korean War, Vietnam, Cambodia, Spanish Civil War... and the Falklands might fit in here too;

Or is that too broad a brush do you think?

How about an X vs. Y build?
I was browsing the we last night and saw the Airfix Sherman Firefly vs Tiger 1 kit advertised and it made me think (bloody dangerous I know!!)..... Think of two subjects that were either adversaries or related - destroyer vs. Sub, tank vs. tank/gun, aircraft vs aircraft, X/Y/A wing vsTie etc and possibly make into a small diorama?
        Neil (yet another one...)

Civilian vehicle. I have several of those.

The model show I go to is having an April fools theme next year. It's a bit like the our "The End Is Nigh" build. I'm going to try something for that.

        Image

I like RangerNeil's idea of an adversary build. I'd extend the theme to civilian topics. The Collings Foundation museum in Hudson, Massachusetts has a race every year - "The Race of The Century". They pit various vehicles against each other: Bicycle vs. foot; horse and buggy vs. early car; etc.

I like the adversary idea - we could also throw Bombers vs Night Fighters into that mix as I know Night Fighters comes up regularly, and someone mentioned bombers again recently.

And from the civilian idea how about Ford vs Ferrari... think I've heard that one somewhere?

So people could build a subject from one side or the other, or both if they're feeling adventurous?

Suggestion... how about something like : "the one you don't want too..."

Sticking my two pennyworth in. As I have gone to for years and volunteer at RIAT. As this year is their 50th anniversary. Put off by Covid from last year. Really wide, any participating item, They have support vehicles, and tanks so they are legitimate, or any from the first and last.

On another note, I've thought that an "After Hours" GB would be cool. If you don't complete your build by the end of a GB, then it gets rolled into the "After Hours" GB allowing your to finish at your own pace. Then maybe once a year or so, we showcase what has been completed in the "After Hours."

I like the "after hours" or "finish what you started" build idea. I imagine it could run year round and be joined when one is ready. It could also include shelf of doom builds since most group builds require starting on a new in the box model.
