What thinner to use...

Post by Garion77 »

Hello,
I was about to make a dot filter with oil paints on my current project and ran in a problem with my varnish... I know it's about all the chemistry thing...
so I only have to kind of varnish at hand. I have AllClad's aqua gloss, semi matte and Klear Kote Flat
The second kind I have is Tamiya's clear and flat.
On my current projet I used Allclad semi matte and white spirits for the dot filter. And it reacted badly...
The other thinner I have are Mig Thinner (the old red bottle) and Enamel odorless thinner.
Which one should I use with which varnish ?
Thank you
Francis

Alcad aqua gloss is what I'v used and put oils over that and haven't had any problems....water and oil don't react.

White spirits might be the problem. Try something less harsh like low odour terpenoids. Also, try glossing AFTER the dot filter. Why do you need to do it before?

I use dot filters on armour. My painting process is this. Primer, acrylics, decals, Matt coat to seal, dot filters, gloss coat then finally a water based wash for dirt. Never had any reaction problems.
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

it's not that I needed to gloss before...and it's first time I try this technic. And from what I read or saw on the internet they always had a varnish of some type before. In my case it was Allclad semi matte. I'll try your suggestion with turpenoids. I have some in the house because of the paintings the girls do.

Thank you
Francis
