Tomcat's MPC Eagle Transporter

Post by Tomcat64 »

My entry this year will be the Eagle Transporter from Space 1999.
Image

This was one of my favourite space ships from growing up in the '70s and the special effects crew responsible for Space 1999, lead by Brian Johnson, went on to work on both Alien and The Empire Strikes Back.

Here's some info courtesy of the MoonbaseAlpha wiki fanpage
Overview
The Eagle (designed by Brian Johnson) is the primary form of transportation for the inhabitants of Moonbase Alpha. A multipurpose craft, it is divided into three basic sections; the command module, the service pod, and the superstructure. Capable of speeds up to 23,700 miles per second, or 15% of the speed of light, it is powered by four nuclear fusion rockets, and carries fuel reserves for 48 hours of flight. There are 5 main types of Eagle Transporter.

Variants
Transporter Eagles

The Transporter Eagle, designated Type A, is fitted with the standard passenger pod and is capable of holding 8 passengers (up to 12 in an emergency), in addition to the pilot and co-pilot. It is used for day to day transportation when special scientific equipment is not needed, and there is no anticipated danger.

Reconnaissance Eagles
Looking very similar to the transporter pod Eagles, these are designated as Type C, and come equipped with various types of sensory devices for exploratory missions. They also contain a computer that can either be tied into Alpha's master computer or work independently.

Rescue Eagles
Image
Identifiable by the bold red stripes on the pod, these Eagles are designated Type D, and have been adapted for field diagnosis and treatment of injury or disease that may be encountered on a planet's surface or in deep space. Manned by medical personnel, Rescue Eagles are equipped with mobile beds, patient-monitor units, and facilities for field surgery.

Freighter Eagles
Equipped with a cargo pod, the Freighter Eagle is designated Type B, and used for transporting supplies and equipment to exploration teams on a planet's surface, and for the return elements vital to Alpha's environmental and reprocessing systems. They can also be used as space-borne tankers for the refueling of Eagles with insufficient reserves for the trip back to Alpha.

Laboratory Eagle
With a modified version of the passenger pod equipped to serve as a remote laboratory, this Eagle is designated Type E, and can be used to locate and refine crude minerals on the planets surface, eliminating the need to transport bulky raw ores back to Alpha. This pod also serves as a base for planetary-contact-and-survey teams. It can carry food and water and recycle air to support the team for several weeks.

Specialty Modules
The Eagle can also accommodate one of several specialty modules, such as the winch platform used to disperse the nuclear waste canisters in Area 2. There is also an additional booster unit that can be added to the super-structure which can increase the range and power of the Eagle.

Onto the Kit itself and this one dates back to 1975 and a company called "Fundimension"; I remember building the Airfix boxing of the same kit way back. There are varying opinions as to the scale with some saying 1/72 and Scalemates listing it as 1/96... anyway it's not the 1/48 beast but one of it's smaller cousins.

The instructions don't show anything overly complex

And whilst the moulding looks a little soft in places it's commendably free of flash & mould lines for the most part

And the final thing in the box is a fan card of Alan Carter, played by Nick Tate who I'm lead to believe is a bit of cult hero down under but I'll leave that to be confirmed by our Antipodean contingent

Tomcat's MPC Eagle Transporter - Build Part I

Post by Tomcat64 »

I made a start on this yesterday evening whilst waiting for glue to dry on another project.

Just the four parts required for section A which is the service module at the rear of the ship
Image

The side parts went together ok, and the join underneath was pretty good after a bit of gentle sanding. Up top it required a little more careful work with the sanding sticks to work around the raised detail but nothing too onerous and will need a little filler to finish it off
Image

Just one thing to note here is that there is a step inside the mounting guides on the rear end of the module - this is deliberate
Image

And corresponds to the same on the end panel (part 12) - this is make sure you get it in the right way up
Image

Both end panels needed a little sanding to get settled in place, but that's the first module done :)
Image

I did glue up the second module as well as the beak yesterday but ran out of time before sanding them down so hoping to make a bit more progress today.

Thanks as always for looking in :cheers2:
Cheers, Neil

Very nice choice!! I debated on the Eagle - but mine heart is set on the 1/48th scale one and if I spent £140 + on a kit (+ ££'s on all the metal work...) the wife would kill me. :) Going to be very interested in seeing how this one comes along. Do you know how it compares to the old Airfix offering which I think was around the 1/9th mark???
    Neil (yet another one...)

Yep I'd love to tackle the 1/48 one but wouldn't have anywhere to put it when it was finished - let alone the price!

This is the same kit as the Airfix one (1/96) just reboxed & rebranded over the years - it's actually stood up pretty well from the looks of things so far but I've not tried to fit the modules together as yet.
