#32 Revell 1:48 Dornier Do215

Post by Tat2bhoy »

For the Bomber build SIG, I will be building the Revell 1:48 Dornier Do215, kit number 04925.

Image

The Revell kit was released in 2015, it is a Redbox of the ICM kit which was first released in 2014.
It is the night fighter variant but all the parts are there to make the original ICM Do215B-4

Image

I will also be using the BigEd photo etch and mask set.

The Dornier Do 215 was a light bomber, aerial reconnaissance aircraft and later a night fighter, produced by Dornier originally for export, but in the event most served in the Luftwaffe. Like its predecessor, the Dornier Do 17, it inherited the title "The Flying Pencil" because of its slim fuselage. The successor of the Do 215 was the Do 217.

Image

The Do 17 fast bomber elicited renewed interest from foreign air forces (after the initial Do 17K series production). In July 1937, Dornier therefore prepared a pre-series Do 17 Z-0 as a demonstrator for export customers. It was given the civil registration D-AAIV. While this aircraft was essentially identical to the production Do 17Z, the Reichsluftfahrtministerium assigned the designation Do 215 to the export version. The V1 prototype retained the nine-cylinder Bramo 323 Fafnir radial engine of the Do 17Z.

Image

The second prototype (Do 215 V2) was equipped with Gnome-Rhône 14-NO radial engines. It safely completed testing, but did not attract export orders because it did not offer a notable performance increase over the Do 17Z. Dornier therefore equipped the V3 prototype with 1,175 PS (1,159 hp) Daimler-Benz DB 601Ba inline engines. much like the 1937 fitting of the earlier DB 600 powerplants to the Do 17L and M subtypes. The V3, which first flew in the spring of 1939, showing a noticeable improvement in flight performance compared to the earlier prototypes.

Image

Series production of the Do 215 A-1 began in 1939. The order, intended for the Swedish Air Force, was stopped in August 1939, due to the political situation. The 18 extant aircraft were embargoed and pressed into Luftwaffe service upon the outbreak of World War II.

Some modifications were made and the resulting aircraft were redesignated Do 215B. This was the standard production version. According to official figures, 105 Do 215s were produced between 1939 and 1941 by Dornier in their factory at Oberpfaffenhofen.

Hi Tat2bhoy, its a nice kit but I had some issues with mating the engine nacelles to the wing as the chord was too flat. It was probably (definitely) my incompetence but I ended up having to hack the wheel wells to get the wings together :wall: . Looking forward to seeing how yours looks infinitely better than mine

I tried to build this kit last year, it ended up in the place where crap kits (my incompetence) end up. I had the same problems with the engine nacelles but I don't have the skills to start hacking so it crashed and burned.

I wish you all the best for this build.

Good Luck, Les

Interesting Do variant, which I think lasted longer in service (night fighter) then the later 17s.

Time to finally get my build thread going :thumb1:
First of all, here’s the sprues.

As you can see, it’s a very big box for the size of the sprue bag :jd:

Image

The main reason I bought this kit, which was a bargain £15 from wonderland models in Edinburgh, was that it’s a reboxed ICM kit, a manufacturer that I really like.

Image

There are six sprues, two of which are identical, and one which is clear.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The decals look ok, won’t sure whether to use them or get after market ones, will decide later on that one.

Image

I also purchased the Big Ed set from Eduard. It contains five different sets which are one for the bomb bay, which is ideal for this S.I.G. build, one for the cockpit, one for the undercarriage, one for the landing flaps and a set of masks for all the glass that’s on this bomber.

I decided to dry fit the nacelles after getting some advice about them being a poor fit from Quax and Les0012, thanks for the advice, saved me a lot of hassle later :th:

Image

I used Tamiya tape to dry fit the wings and nacelles together

Image
Image

When they were put in place, the poor fit was obvious to see, so I marked what area I needed to remove for them to fit better(marked with black)

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

After trial fitting them once I removed the offending plastic with a sanding stick type thing, there was aga- between the wing and the nacelle, so I put some blue tac in the wing to raise it yo the required height, I’ll put in something more permanent when it come to the glueing stage.

Image
Image

Also the nacelles parts are eached marked left or right, so when they are built up you know which one goes on which wing, which is very handy as the instructions have each step marked left or right until the fitting of them to the wings, when they are suddenly reversed, (b)left on the right wing and (a)right on the left wing!!!

Before starting the cockpit, I marked on the instructions where the PE was used in each step, also done the same on the PE instructions to make sure I didn’t miss any step, hopefully

Image
Image
Image

The parts marked red need to be removed for PE parts to be fitted

Image

I marked each part to be removed

Image

The start of the PE fitting. Once it’s all fitted I gave it an undercoat before giving it a coat of RLM 02.
Some of the PE are prpainted so they get fitted after the painting.

Image

Once it’s all painted and weathered, it makes into a very nicely detailed cockpit

Once the two halves of the fuselage and the bomb bay frames were fitted, a bit of filler and some sanding was required on the seams

Using plans I found on the internet, I marked up for doing some riveting, then set about the tedious task of riveting using the trumpeter rivet tool, a lot of work but worth that bit of extra time in the build

Next was to add the Eduards bomb bay set, there are two alternative bomb racks in the set

Image

Several parts go into the bomb racks, two of which are required

Image

Not sure how much of it will be seen on the final build, but still worth the effort

After much deliberation, a bit like I had with the bomb bay, I decided to go with the upgrade of the undercarriage even though it wouldn’t really be seen either very often.

The interior detailed needed to be removed before more intricate PE folding and glueing can take place :eeek:

There was a poor fit on the underside of the nacelles, so some spru gloo and some sanding soon sorted it.

Image

To sort the fit issue of earlier of the nacelles to the wings, I super glued some cut off cocktail stick inside the wings for a better fit.

Image

Didn’t do much detail work on the engines, just a basic paint job, nothing too much required as I will be covering them up. Put in the landing gear parts that needed to be fitted.

Image

Got them fitted to the wings and happy with the fit, definitely helped and saved a lot of time with the earlier info I got from some of the guys, thanks lads, much appreciated :th:

As I’m building the B-4 version not the B-5, I fitted part 32 instead of part 21

Image
Image

Using the big ed mask set, I set upon doing the fun task of masking all the windows, there’s a few of them lol

Image

There was also a poor fitting piece on the nacelle, so with some plastikard and glue, then a bit of sanding, problem solved

Now for some more PE  this time the landing flaps, these will be seen, this is probably the main reason for buying the big ed set.

Image
Image

The parts of the kit that were required to be removed were all ready to go

Image

First part built, a bit fiddly but builds up nicely as per usual

Image

Test fitted then glued into place, looks nice if I do say so myself

Image

The lower parts required plastic rod to go through, so made some from stretched sprue

Image

Fitted then cut to size

Image

All the upper ones fitted and glued into place

Image

And all the lower ones fitted

Image

This is how it’s meant to look as it is on their web page :jd:
Would love to have the skill to do it like that

Beautiful work there. Those nacelles looked a pain, but you've fixed them nicely. Great PE work and love all the detailing you've done with the riveting etc.

Nice one!!  :th: :th: :cheers2:

Once all the masking was done, the clear parts were secured to the model

Image

Using RLM 66 which was also used for the cockpit interior,

Image

I sprayed the clear parts with it so the interior of the clear parts will look the same as the cockpit interior

Image

Looking at reference pictures, the openings in the wings have two smal parts inside of them

Image

Using stretched sprue, I cut the pieces to the correct size

Image

Then secure in place

Using MRP primer, I sprayed the whole model with it, gave it two coats which also shows up any areas that need reworked, there was a couple of areas that needed a bit of filler and some sanding, then reprimed

For the underside, I used RLM65

Image

I then masked off the landing flaps

Image

Gave them a few coats of RLM66

Image

Then removed the tape

Image

Before painting the upper surface, I masked off all the lower surfaces before giving the upper surface a few coats of RLM71 then masked the camouflage before a few coats of RLM70 was added

Image

Faded panelling was done by adding some white to the RLM65,RLM70 and RLM71 then lightly spraying on each panel

Absolutely brilliant work, I know the PE can be a major mojo drain but you seem to be revelling (no pun intended) it :thumb2:

Thanks for the kind words , much appreciated, and as I said, it’s comments like these that make this a great hobby, I just hope I can get it finished in time, as I do like a fair bit of weathering on my builds
