#33 InvalidUsername's 1/48 ICM JU-88A-4

Post by InvalidUsername »

My entry for the bomber sig - ICM 1/48 JU-88A-4
ImageJu-88A-4 build by Braden C, on Flickr

Aftermarket I'll be using; eduard PE seat belts & interior set and resin wheels by CMK.
Will have to sort out a pair of swastika's as the kit decal sheet doesn't include them.

ImageJu-88A-4 build by Braden C, on Flickr

All the sprues are in the one bag, with the clear parts in a seperate bag

Using this book as a reference/guide.

I thought I'd do a JU-88 because of the interesting development history behind the real aircraft . The reviews for the ICM JU-88 kits are pretty good, so I thought I'd give one a go :thumb2:

How 's the book I was wondering ?
The book is probably the best thing I could source. Covers pretty much the development from early to late, points out the differences between the different models with drawings, photographs and descriptions.
I have a few Squadron/signal books for other aircraft and personally find them very good

Sprue shots;

Image ImageImage
ImageImageImage
Image

First part of the build starts in the cockpit. Lots of PE to be placed in here, most of it coloured, some that needs painting. The red coloured areas are where kit detail is removed to make way for the PE.
Image
Image

Started with removing some detail from a piece that will fit to the right side of the cockpit
Image
Image

Parts in the cockpit that needed detail removed completed
Image

The instructions show adding cockpit parts after certain areas are painted. In my case, there will be a few parts that can only be fitted once the PE is on, so somethings will be assembled/glued/painted out of order to accommodate where need be

First part glued on
Image
Image

First impressions of the kit seem good. The plastic is on the softer side. A few mold ejector pin markings, and a number of areas on the fuse that have sink marks, stuff I'll point out as the build goes on

Spent a few hours cutting and bending brass. Gave the PE fret a good clean followed by a light scuffing with 3M scotch brite. Image

First up was a holder for one oxygen bottle
Image

Image

As you can see it didn't quiet fit too well, so ended up sanding the bottle a bit to get a tighter fit
Image

Fitting extra PE bits into the cockpit
Image

Cut free and bend
Image

Image

Image

Image

The upper oxygen bottle hose came out and ran across the cockpit wall and into the instrument panel, they are normally bent around the dash or clipped back along the cockpit wall when not in use. I tried stretching sprue to make a new hose, but found thin gauge lock wire to be easier to work with. Added a hose to the lower bottle too
Image

Both cockpit walls and the radio panel ready for paint

Pilot and rear gunner seats up next
Image

Image

The seats build well, and have a good bit of detail. A small downfall is the location of the injector marks and the pilot seat isn't one piece leaving a seam to deal with.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Test fitting and checking the seat height to make sure it all fits under the canopy
Image

Image

Image

Image

Canopy seems like it will fit nice and snug too :thumb2:

Thanks everyone for the support. The PE is a love hate relationship. The delicate folding and gluing of the smaller parts can be frustrating at times but I enjoy working with it for the end result.

Great work ! I fully understand what you're saying about PE. I'm having trouble with mine in my entry with the same plane as you. I found it quite harder than I expected. It always look so easy when watching someone else doing it ! But I bought new tools this week to help me. I have a lot of PE for mine but may be as a first big experience I should have done it in 1/48 scale instead of 1/72

Appreciate all the comments!

I've pretty much got all of the cockpit PE done now. Adding all these control levers was fiddly and time consuming (roughly 1.5 hours work :bash: )
A total of 18 went on in various positions. The eduard instructions have the levers placed for an aircraft flying, so I adjusted some positions accordingly. I believe one lever was numbered incorrectly on the eduard sheet (See pic below) Part 63 is called for 3 times, but there's only 2 on the PE fret and it wasn't suited for where it needed to be. I had left over levers and substituted it with parts 59 & 37.
Image

Image

Image

Fitted into position
Image

Image

Rear panel was straight forward
Image

Some detail painting and some light weathering of the raised detail with an off white pencil completes the right side panel.
Image

To complement the floor where the bombardier would lie, I thought about trying something new and replicating plywood effect. Thought about painting it, so watched a few youtube videos to get an idea, but it seamed like to much work for only a small area. Instead I googled plywood grain, found a few suitable pictures printed them off at different scales and cut out the desired shape, easy as and looks the part
Image

Image

I decided on adding brake lines for the rudder pedals. Small gauge fuse wire, and some paint really add to the detail
Image

Image

And some detail painting concludes this update

But seriously nice work ! I'm at the same stage as you...and was wondering if I put the colored PE before the gloss coat for the wash or after ? Have Any advice for me on that ?
Thank you Garion77, I haven't got any experience with 1/72 PE as I build 1/48. Knowing the fiddly frustrations with 1/48 PE, I can only give you the utmost gratitude for doing it in 1/72 :

I would say personally, if your going to apply a wash over/around the PE, I would place the PE and gloss everything.

Its great work mate, all those little levers. I'm in the same camp as Digger except I wear a visor as well, just to keep the fuselage in vision.... I think its an age thing now I'm 23.....ish
