Which Airbrush to buy.

Post by Tabasco »

Hello,

A question if I may. Having only just returned to the hobby of scale modelling, what type of airbrush should I buy and why, and where to buy from, depending on which one to buy do they come with a compressor or do you have to buy this on it's own.

Thank you.

For starting out you really can't go wrong with the £60 kit deals on ebay, compressor and DA airbrush.
Many people say you should buy a more expensive one and honestly, while a more expensive AB IS better, it's a case of how much so and will a newcomer notice?
I certainly didn't, the difference becomes apparent with experience and while I use my Iwata for pretty much everything once in a while I get out my old cheap Chinese Double Action brush that came with my first compressor to remind myself of the difference and it always surprises me with how good it is.

Something like this

The new Ultimate A/B is getting good reviews, the Iwata Neo is a strong contender and the Harder & Steenbeck Ultra is a good starter that can grow with your skill level.
As for the tank, get one with a tank and a moisture trap.
Where to buy does depend on where you are but air-craft.net has fans in the UK, Europe and North America...

After a little thinking, buying the A/B from Ultimate is the route I think I will go for as each unit is taken apart, put back together again and setup correctly by Paul.

Availability of parts from Ultimate or Badger, good price point, well built and sprays the Ultimate primers nicely
Just realized how much I use my A/B to spray primer now....used to be rattle can Tamiya or Citadel and I have not touched those since I got the Ultimate air brush.
My only issue is a bit of primer spitting at start up and shut off, so I have to be away from my target at those times...seems to be improving as I mess with the pressure sweet spot

Paul,

Will go for one of your airbrushes, with the availability of spare parts and the fact that they are setup ready to use, there are a few other items that I will also need and buy at time, will wait until I have 50 posts before ordering so I'm able to get the 10% discount, that's if it's still available.
