Lysus' 1/48 Hasegawa J2M3 Raiden "Prisoner of War"

Well, finished something! The kit itself was nice, I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who likes the Raiden. I'm tempted to get another and do the Brit version of the captured fighter.
The real plane seemed pretty clean in all the photos so I kept the dirt to a minimum, a wash of 60/40 Ultimate Dark Dirt and Light Dirt with some spots around the exhausts and wing roots getting a pure dark dirt wash and a streaky clean up. The real plane had a different antenna mast and the kit does not supply that for you so I had to cut it off and reseat it on the kit at the right angle. Mercifully, this also meant no wire to string as the plane didn't have one while the Japanese version did. Hooray! The real plane also had the inside wheel bay doors removed so I omitted them on the kit, too.
Rudder striping was painted on instead of using the decals, otherwise all the decals were used.
That's not to say I didn't have my struggles. There were some ugly gaps to fix, but not serious. My troubles were trying to handle the kit after the metallic paint was on, and I think the Alclad Air-frame Aluminum was too dark to start with, maybe should have used a lighter aluminum or a dull aluminum. A few spots are far darker than I would have liked but in the end I decided to move on after three mask and respray for color combinations on the metal panels

The canopy frame is messed up a bit, and I think next time I'll buy a masking set rather than toil away at that again. Live and learn!

NOTE: WIP pictures are hopefully replaced correctly now. Hopefully I didn't screw up the order, though I feel like I lost a couple along the way. Thanks for your patience!

Thank you, Stokesy. I'm on a quest to do a decent metal finish, partly because I like the look but also because once digger303 was disappointed that a bit of metal on my sub was PE and not shiny due to my skill. I owe him

Fantastic paintwork and overall modelling
I don't like the aircraft itself mind you, but love the work you have accomplished on it
A perfectly crashed intact Zero was recovered from a swap and brought back to life so that they could evaluate its performance and handling capabilities and compare those to the Corsairs and such.
Was a HUGE advantage for the Americans/Allies in the Pacific to shift the advantage to Allied forces

Thanks!
Yeah, I wouldn't build a straight Jack but with the US/UK markings, sure. I dig the lines of it so this loophole made me happy.

Thanks, fellas. It's a pain in the rear with all the masking but worth it. Not perfect and I can do better next time, but it was a good experience with a fun kit

That's a really stunning looking finish with the metalwork mate!
Great result - and nice to see you finish one on time too

Thanks, Seb. I'd say the 1/48 Hasegawa is a good kit if you're looking for one. There's a 1/32 I believe, too.

Many thanks! I wouldn't say it's easy, but it's not too difficult, either. Just need some patience and TLC while handling it. Neither of which I'm good at...
