Lysus' Hasegawa YF-19 (Macross Plus)

Egg plane time again!

Image

This time I'm going for a YF-19 from Macross Plus. Have myself the 1/48 version in the stash but that's for this summer, so tide myself over let's do a mini version. The YF-19 was an experimental plane in the series and different from the mass produced VF-19 Excalibur. Macross Plus is pretty fantastic to watch, a cross between Top Gun and Blade Runner. Sort of. If you watch the English dub you get to hear Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad voice the main character, Lt. Dyson.

So let's get comfy, use deadly weapons for the wrong reasons and get to it.

PART I: Build

Image

A few more parts than last year's VF-1 Valkyries, but then again I'm only doing one, not three. Still, just 5 little runners, one of them for three clear parts.

Image

Guys. Guys, I appreciate the enthusiasm, but we did this last year. Just...just go guard something, ok?

Image

Ok, anywho. The runners:

Image

Sadly it appears my decal sheet has been nicked and dinged (rather large for a kit so small I might add...I'm having terrible flashbacks to last year's 300 decals...).

Image

Got a little start on it during kiddo naps, given my experience last time I'll be painting this up in pieces then assembling it. From what I can tell every seam line is supposed to be there since the fuselage has to come apart to do this:

Image

So onto alligator clips most parts will go rather than get glued in. Hopefully this won't come back to hurt me when it is time to glue them in...

Ok , that's it, I am breaking out the Minions to help me if you get Stormtroopers to help you.
At least Gary is pretty much guaranteed making things difficult for you
I wonder if Minions can read Japanese or Chinese or whatever the heck my instructions are written in

Interesting space thingy doodad :thumb2:

Well, I've ordered them to go do something else this year to stay out of my hair. More trouble than they were worth, really.

I had the Transformers Jetfire as a kid (which was just a recolored Valkyrie) and it was the BEST.

Definitely update your scalemates stash listing, it will save you from buying the same thing over again.
Especially true for me with stash in multiple locations, a memory that seems to be uhhhh, what were we talking about again??.

Just a small update as I'm home alone with the little ones this weekend, so not much time to work.

Seamwise there isn't much to worry about except for the thruster nacelles. There's a nasty one right down the middle top and bottom. Hasegawa tends to be good about alignment, but these were pretty awful not just for the size of the seam but also that they didn't line up.

I decided I would nip the guides and then broke one while prying the halves apart. So I guess that's the job halfway done

Image

I used some TET to melt them up and pressed down until beads formed. After that cured up (I came back a few hours later) I sanded that down and lobbed some Mr Surfacer 1000 on the seam with an old brush to check it. Still there a little so I added on some Mr Dissolved Putty and let that cure overnight. Sanded the next day and it looked better, but still present in a couple spots after another Surfacer test. So I stepped up to Tamiya Putty (perhaps where I should have started) and this did the trick.

Here's a blurry and not so helpful pic from the Dissolved Putty stage:

Image

After the Tamiya putty was cleaned up I had to rescribe the panel lines there with a 0.2 BMC chisel and some Dymo Tape. Looks alright now, we'll see once the primer goes on if it's good to go.

Image

There's the rest of it ready for some Stynylrez/Ultimate Black primer. I think meanwhile I'll give the canopy a Pledge dip and put it somewhere safe from dust until I'm ready for it. Hopefully Primer can happen tonight, maybe some color tomorrow!

Thanks! Got more progress to post, just need the time to do it. Don't know what they're up to back there, I let them help me last year and it was a bit of a mess.

Onward...

Got it primed with Stynylrez/Ultimate black, for some reason my grey went missing.

Image

Painted primary coat with Mr Color 1 White and 19 Sandy Brown at about 70/30. The color call out asks for a nearly white yellow, but the animation is much more on the yellow side so I went with this. Feet/exhaust painted with Alclad Stainless Steel while the landing gear were Pale Burnt Metal. Hey, there's my grey primer...

Image

Added the console decal directly onto the paint. Went on like a charm.

Image

After that I sprayed some Tamiya X-27 Clear Red onto the side sensor things and...what the hell are you two doing back there?

looking like a nice wee kit, love the styling.

Also think your ex-build buddies have taken the hump and playing without you, lol.

They're actually from The Black series ;)

Well, life got a hold of me so I didn't get to finish this on time. I sent the troopers home but I did manage to get it all decalled. Just needs a top coat. Or not. It's an eggie :)

Once stuff calms down I can try and get some real shots of it. Oh well, always next year!
