Small Shop Blades Rust?

Post by 04Stefan07 »

Any of your blades from the Small Shop rust?

I have two that came with a photo etch set I bought and the blades are about half rusted.

I use Xacto blades on all my hobby knives and they rust pretty quickly. They seem to have a very light oil coating on them and when that gets wiped off, they rust super quickly. I keep up to date on my Tetanus shots; but, I try to use a blade quickly and not use ones that are super rusted. I've stabbed my self pretty good with a blade once; bled everywhere, I might have sunk the blade 1/4" (6mm) into me. If that'd had rust on it, I'd have been worried.

So to answer you question; yeah, blades tend to rust. It's probably got to do with how they make them and coat them. But rusted on arrival sounds a bit off.

Cheers for the reply.

Anything out there that doesn't rust at all or very little?

I give my high carbon steel (non stainless) tools a spritz of Boeshield T9. Its a bit pricey at $18USD a can, but you get a big can and it works a treat. Check it out on Amazon.
Working on currently..

Revell 1/181 Snark
Riich 1/700 Borei submarine

I find the craft blades will rust. You could buy a diamond sharpening stone around the 240 -400 grit and just swipe the rust off each time you go use it. Those stones also very good for getting a flat surface on the plastic.
I have found the scalpel blades tend not to rust as they are stainless and very sharp of course.
Scalpel blades require there own holder usually.
