Nocturna "Malefic times" Luna's soldier

Post by MarkVerploeg »

Hi guys
So with my first 2 figures finished it is time for some new ones
With the Luz figure in the sci-fi build i decided to make another figure but i will put it here in the WIP section as it may take a bit longer to finish
And 1 entry is enough i think

So this time i will be painting this figure
Image
It is Luna's soldier in 70mm or 1/24 scale
Another figure from the Malefic times series

Image
All the parts

Image
Image
Image
The body and head are the biggest part
The detail looks pretty good and i couldn't find and seamlines or airbubbles that needed some attention

Image
One part of the jacket comes as a seperate piece

Image
The right leg

Image
The lower right arm and hand with the sword

Image
And the little base
This has some airbubbles but only on the bottom so those won't be seen

Image
Image
Image
Image
I then glued the figure together
The fit was great and i couldn't find any gaps or seams to fill
So in terms of quality it is very good
Because one foot is on a different step of the base i had to glue a small stick under her foot to have her stand up the right way and make painting a bit easier

Image
I kept the seperate part of the jacket seperate as it is easier to paint this way
Now i can reach the back of her leg easier aswell as the inside of this part
Once the skin and inside of this part are painted i can glue it in place and then i only have the red outside to worry about

And that is all i have for now
I hope to get it primed soon but the last couple of nights it was just too hot at the bench and i didn't want to prime it in case the primer dries too fast and possibly cracks or peels off
I do have a strong sense i made this post before but i guess i didn't hit the submit button as i couldn't find it anywhere
But that wouldn't be the first time that happened to me
Anyway thanks for stopping by and having a look
Untill next time
Cheers
Mark

Thanks
But i still am a bit new to figures
I only painted 2 up to now
And a whole bunch of smaller 1/35 scale figures that i used on diorama's and vehicles
But the techniques are different
Well basicly the same but i never got that in depth with the techniques you can use

I buy my figures from Wendys minatures
They are a shop in the Netherlands but if you want you can buy them from Nocturna ,it depends a bit on where you live
But the prices at Wendys are good and in the Netherlands they ship very fast
I ordered there 2 times now and both times the figures arrived the day after i ordered them

Thanks Ivan
I am just about to put some primer on her
It is finally cool enough at the bench and i still have some energy left from the day
Something that didn't happen a lot the last couple of days
But with the primer on her i can start painting soon so that is good news

I googled Nocturna models USA and one of the results was Hangar 18
The state was CO so i guess Colorado but i don't know for sure
But i think you can find some others aswell
The big let down with figures is that most modelshops carry only a few or even no figure brands at all
In the Netherlands (where i live) we only have 1 dedicated shop for figures
The USA should have a few more but it can be hard to find shops sometimes
And quite a few figure manufacturers are based in Europe so that doesn't help you either

Hi guys
Time for the first update
I painted the eyes and skin tones yesterday so i think i have enough for a short update on the progres so far

Image
I started out with the eyes
I used ivory for the white of the eyes
This makes it look better then white as that is just too bright
And some prussian dark blue for the iris
Oncr that had some time to dry i dropped a bit of lmasking fluid on them to protect them from overspray

Image
Next was the base color
This is malefic skincolor wich is basicly just a brown

Image
Then a shadow color was added with frozen skin
It is hard to see but along the edge of her tummy you can see it

Image
Then it was time for the topcoat of the skin
This is the color pale skin

Image
And some very carefull spraying with the color white skin for the final highlights

Image
I think i got the colors pretty close to the illustration of the box art but not a copy
I think it will take a bit(read a lot) more practice to get that good

Image
And the last facial features where painted like the lips, eyebrows and lashes

Unfortunatly i spilled some paint when i was basepainting the hair and clothing
And that was with black so that is a bit difficult to cover up
So i may end up repainting the skin and cover the edges with masking fluid to make sure it doesn't happen again
But this is all i have for now

Take care and untill next time
Cheers

Hi guys
I think it is time for a little update
The figure is now base painted and ready for the shading and highlights

Image
After the first update i had some second thoughts about the skin color
As you can see i already started the basepainting at that point but i decided to change the skin
So i applied a new coat of malefic skin and this time i replaced the Vallejo highlight colors with the 2 highlights from the Andrea flesh set
This looks better i think

Image
Because i seem to be a master at spilling paints that you can cover very well (like black) i decided to put some masking medium around all the parts of the figure that where to be painted in black
Then inpainted the black and the coat was painted with dark vermillion
The edges are painted with deep yellow
Both of these colors are a bit transparent so i had to apply several coats to get them to cover properly

Imageher sword was painted painted with mr metal color paints
Chrome silver for the blade and brass for the handguard
The grip or handle was painted with leather brown

And that allready concludes this update
She still looks like this as i have neen focussing on some other builds lately
But i will get back to this as soon as i can and start doing the shadows and highlights on the clothing

Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Take care
Cheers

Hi guys
So here is the final update for this figure
I finished it last night and i am pretty happy with the way it turned out
I can still use some more practice but that will take time and a lot of figures

But these are the last steps of this project
Image
Because i repainted the skin i had to do the base colors again
This time i used some masking fluid to protect the skin
And repainted the black ,yellow and red

Imageon the box art the black clothing shows a purplish glow
So i started out with a dark purple mix i used on the Lilith figure

Image
And a lighter mix as the final highlight but if the light doesn't hit it the right way it still looks black

Imagei then thinned some black red and used that for the shadows in the creases of the jacket

Image
And i added some highlights with the color scarlett
This could really only be done near the shadows as most of the jacket is actually pretty smooth
I didn't add any highlights to the yellow
On the boxart they used white for that but that is 2d and a figure is 3d so a white spot on the yellow would look a bit weird
And i tried it before deciding to leave it alone

Image
The facial features where repainted using ivory and prussian dark blue for the eyes and dark red for the lips
I thinned the dark red quite a bit and used several layers untill i got to the color i wanted

Image
As the hair appears to be brown on the boxart i started out with a first highlight of chocolate brown

Image
I then added some US field drab as a second highlight

Image
And a black acryoic wash made from black Vallejo paint and water to finish it
I noticed these home made acrylic washes tend to leave a satin to shiny finish once they are dry so i didn't even use a gloss or satin varnish

Image
I then painted the steps
At first i thought the cloth was just a piece of random cloth but it is part of the figures clothing so that had to be painted in the same way
To add a bit more depth to the steps i first painted it in a khaki color
Then drybrushed it with neutral grey, sky grey and finally ivory
To add some dirt i used the same black wash i used on the hair and whiped that off right after i applied it on a step
So it doesn't get a chance to completely settle and start drying

Image
The figure was then glued on to the base

Image
And the entire thing was glued to the stand wich i painted with a thinned down mix of vallejo smoke and black
It was also covered in a coat of satin varnish to leave a bit of a shine on the stand

Image
And then i called it finished
It is my 4th figure and i do think i am getting more comfortable with the techniques involved in figure painting
But there still is a lot to learn and improve
My plan is to paint a bust some time soon as those are bigger and allow me to add more detail
Something that is a lot harder to do with a figure this size

And that is all i have for this build
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Take care and untill next time
Cheers

Hi guys
So it has been a while since this figure was painted and finished
It was posted here and on a Dutch forum and after a couple of days i received a not so nice comment on the other forum
Basicly guy was being a a**hole that had something to say about each and every detail but in the rnd i had to agree that my work could have been better
So i decided to strip the paint and start over

Image
First i painted the eyes and covered them with some masking fluid once that was dry i painted skin base color

Image
Then i added the shadow color

Image
And the final highlight color for the skin
This was sprayed on so the layer is thin enough to let the shadow color shine through

Image
Next was the jacket
I used the red color set fron Andrea for this
The first layer is the basecolor

Image
I then added the first shadow color in all the creases of the jacket

Image
And the second shadownwas added
This is a very dark red color that was only used in the deepest parts of the creases

Image
I then used the first highlight
This was used on all the high parts of the creases and jacket
I covered almost all of the base color at this point

Image
Then the second highlight color was applied
I used this closer to the edge of the creases and some of the larger parts of the jacket

Image
And finally the 3rd highlight
This was only applied to the edge of the creases
It is a bit hard to see the differrnce between the layers in a photo though

Next time the black of the clothing and the yellow edge of the jacket will be painted but i only base painted the black at the moment
I have been working on other figures and builds a bit more as this time i don't want to rush this figure and because it is a revisit i don't want to work on it too much at a time to keep the mojo going
So that is all for now
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
Take care
Cheers

I love the Nocturna figures, the detail is just amazing.

I thought your first go around with this one was impressive, but well done for having the courage to go at it again because I think the second time looks even more stunning.

Out of interest what did you use to strip down the paint? I've got a Nocturna fig that I'm not happy with the face and want to strip it back and go again, but am a little nervous about damaging the detail on the resin.
Cheers, Neil

Hi guys
I just wanted to show the end result of this project
The entire figure was repainted as the first time around wasn't as good as it could have been
But i haven't got the progres pictures so instead i will just show the finished work

Image

Image
Image
Image

And this is how she looks now
This time all the paintwork was done with Andrea paints unlike the last time when several colors where from Vallejo
Not that those are bad but the color i used now are ment to be used together so that works better then the mix and match colors i used before

And that is all i have for this
Thanks for stopping by and having a look
