Spitfire FR. Mk. XIVe

Post by pourquoi61 »

THANK GOD this one is done. The model went together very well, the NMF was something else. I always avoid NMF and this finish shows why. I will try it again some time in the future and take on board the advice given to me by Avgas not to use Tamiya metal paints for spraying. At some point during my holding the model I managed to dig my thumb nail into the paint work and my fingerprint transferred itself on to the engine cowl. I made an attempt to remove said marks with some success but by this time I just wanted it done and out of the way.
So here is the finished model:

Disrgarding the paint finish it's actually a great build, and of course the finish isn't your fault; but it's a great advert for not using Tamiya metallics for spraying! :th:

Very nice looking Spitfire :th:

It's a shame about the Tamiya silver but very nice all the same.

Thanks guys for the kind(?) words about the kit, if it weren't for the NMF this would have been an entirely nice build. :violin:

I think it turned out great - you should do another NMF plane - just different paint.

I agree with you though, the Tamiya paints are a little less than ideal for NMF

Great Spit! Maybe the paint didn't turn out the way you wanted, but I think the build is great and it'll spice up any shelf you it on. :th:

I second all of the above. You battled through it and salvaged a good looking Spit despite the paint. I hope you have another go at an NMF finish in the future.

Nice build, and even if the Tamiya paints are not NMF by todays standard, it still looks very nice. :th:

Tip:
Always have a couple of cotton buds at the ready when painting.
Drenched in the thinner used.
1. For tip cleaning
2. For "saving the day" when you have accidents, like; spilling paint, splutter, fingerprints...etc.
Just gently roll (don't swipe!) the wet bud over the area to suck upp spilled/excess paint, or to remove fingerprint.
(Or some debri, dust, hair that is there)
The thinner will blend and loosen the paint to leave a smooth area behind without any "step".
Let thinner evaporate and re-paint the area.
I always have them ready, and they have saved me over and over...

I have always used the Alclad 2 paints for my NMF finishes, it is a little expensive, but looks amazing. If you use an airbrush it is great, dont brush it though. I know people that have used aluminium foil for NMF. Dont ask me how they do it, I have never tried. I am too lazy to do it that way, and I enjoy airbrushing too much.
