Tims lead sled Mercury 49

Post by Timplastic »

As the gullwing nears the end I had to get started on the next build.
I had posted on ism Facebook for people to help decide what was going to be the next kit. It was between a top fuel rail drag car, or this Mercury 49.
Mercury won !
Image
Which I'm quite happy with. It's going to be out the box build, a little engine wiring and flock in the interior for carpet. The main attention will be the exterior paint job. These cars are well known for the paint jobs and flames look damn good. My free hand is not to bad but I was in no way going to undertake free hand flames, lucky enough there is a company in oz that sells flame masks for the car

As I had learnt with the merc start with the body
So first thing is get rid of the shine and check for imperfections and seem lines. There was skittle work to do but must say verb impressed. It is a very new kit 2007 it's not a rebox of an old 70/80 kit.ImageImage
Really like the shape of this car custom 40/50 cars are just so good looking

I have got the main body of parts now built up. The kit drops together just a little clean up needed. Simple and enjoyable build so far

With all the parts ready, Ultimate black primer is used on everything, even the body will get a coat before the flames get painted Image

There we go all nice and primedImage

With the primer done it time to get colour on
Image
Engine was painted gunze gloss red. The gear box was painted Vallejo metal color. It's there new range and must say its a mighty good paint. I will be buying more of the paints from this range ImageImageImage
To add a bit more engine detail I am adding spark plug leads
Image
Image
All the little bits added and engine slotted in the chassi ImageImage
With the interior floor fitted it was a tight squeeze to get that engine in Image
Once engine was in all the other drive and suspension parts could be fitted
Image
It was looking too clean so Ultimate dark dirt, earth and light dirt where sprayed on. I used a little gloss to show damp patches of oil. Next up is body and then the interior

Cheers guys

Got to have a clean and tidy engine. My day job is making cars modified and tiny wiring is top of the list

Iceman, this kit is super. Definitely worth looking at revell America recent release 2in1 kits

After the success of the leather on the merc I have decided that the Mercury needs it too
White and red will be used for the seats and trims

Ow my, I'm still surprised how good this Ultimate primer is. It goes down so easy and is just so smooth. Let it dry then mask up for the flames

So there has been huge jump forward with the body
I applied the flame mask set
I ordered them from eBay great product well worth getting
Image
First layer of paint to go down was the yellow
Image

Next came the orange
Image
Image

Then some red so gives the flames shape
Image

Now comes the truly scary part, have I done it right
Image

And the final finish
