Starter weathering set

Post by stellamonster »

Hi everyone

I would like to ask what would be a good weathering set as a starter, I know the term "weathering" covers a multitude of products and different effects, but being quite new to the weathering process, the amount of products on the market is very overwhelming.....
So what I would be looking for is basic weathering for aircraft such as pin washes, grime, streaking etc. and for AVF, the usual rusting, streaking, mud and dust and chipping.
I know it might sound like I have just answered my own question, but like I said, there are loads of stuff to choose from, so what would be a good choice for someone new to the weathering process and have a set that I can build on as my skills improve.

Cheers everyone
Darren

A few pigments from any manufacturer, basic earth/dust colours and some oil paint and white spirit.......that's about as basic as you will need !
The oils can be used for everything except textures ! If you don't fancy oils the grab a couple of basic ready made washes...
Good luck , it's really the best part of modelling for me anyway !

Thanks Mark
I will have a look at some pigments and get some of the basic colours, I have Mig Productions Oil Abteilung Black and odourless thinners and some clay based washes, but I would like to start using pigments to get more of a textured look on Armour models, and make up some pin washes for aircraft.
Thanks for the advice Mark, its much appreciated, time to get browsing for some pigments.

Cheers
Darren

Ultimate washes are a worthy addition to the weathering arsenal :thumb2:

Another vote for Ultimate. Great starters, if for no other reason than, so long as you have a good gloss clear on the model, mistakes can just be washed or wiped off with water.

I don't build armour, just aircraft but I find that the Ultimate washes and tubes of lamp black and burnt umber oil paint do everything I need that can't be done with your normal paints.

I think that when doing aircraft, you probably don't need a lot of different weathering products to achieve a great weathered finish, but looking at some of the armour builds out there you would probably need a lot, depending on how much you are weathering it down, I do agree though, Ultimate washes and a small selection of oils. :thumb2:
