1/72 Jadgtiger on Dragon Wagon

Post by RichBuilds »

Hi folks.

I'm having a crack at replicating this photograph of a Jadgtiger on a Dragon Wagon in 1/72:

Image

There are no colour references I can find for this photo, but Seb tracked down the location of the photograph...

Image

Which lead me to some modern pictures taken in the same area:

Image

Which is a pretty good match for the background building in the original photograph.

The Jagdtiger looks pretty run in, in the photograph so I'll be going for heavy weathering from plenty of use but no battle damage that I can see.

The Dragon Wagon looks pretty standard apart from some reinforcing beams under the tracks.

Let's kick off with the Jagdtiger. I went with the Dragon Sd Kfz 186 Jagdtiger Porsche Version as the base kit, built straight out of the box with no modifications. It comes with a fret of PE grills that were simple to install...

Image

I also coughed up a couple of extra quid on a metal barrel:

Image

Construction was quick, it's a very simple kit with low parts count. If I make it again however, I'll leave the side skirts off before attaching the tracks.

Image

Poundland primer and we're ready put some paint on.

Dunklegelb base coat:

Dunklevert stripes:

Dunglbrun stripes:

Most of the markings on the photo have been lost, but there's a faint trace. I added the decals and then ripped most of them off:
Image

Image

Next a gloss coat and a burnt sienna & black oil wash. I want this to look dirty so I'm pretty heavy handed:
Image

I'd previously built a Dragon Wagon, but I'll be building another for this dio. Time to see what my Jag looks like on the back.

Image

Once the oil wash was dry, i cleaned off a lot trying to leave streaking down the side in the obvious places.

Next I matt coated and heavily chipped using a sponge

Image

I used a graphite pencil 2B to catch the edges and add scratches:

Now I painted up the exhausts, shamelessly stealing the look from Paul's Jagdtiger:

Image

Lastly I dusted using pigment powders. There's a few bits of stowage to add but it's done.

Next up the Dragon Wagon...

Dragon wagon starting to take shape.

So many wheels!

Image

There's a lot of parts but it all goes together pretty easily (especially as this was the 2nd time I've built this kit). Soon it was ready for painting...

Here's it broken down into it's sub-assemblies.

Image

An undercoat of dark grey, then a preshade of black and a base coat get me to here:

Image

Followed by a quick chipping with a sponge. I'm wanting this to look used but not as heavily weathered as the jag

Image

Next go the decals and a good gloss coat to seal it. Then a dirty brown, all over oil wash. I'll be leaving most of this in place and using a dot filter to break up the larger panels.

Image

Image

It's drying overnight ready for the next stage...

Nice work.

I'll bet the driver of the truck (the real one) needed a change of underwear after a downhill run. The Dragon Wagon and trailer were meant for a max load of 40 tons and the Jagdtiger was 70 tons....

Bit more progress on the hangout last night.

Oil wash clened up:

And after a very subtle chipping and tonal variations:
Image

Details left to finish, and a tarp thrown over the front of the trailer...

Fixed the missing pics above!

Go the wheels on the wagon and a few details picked out. That was a lot of wheels...
