Well, me again. Not much happened, but I varnishes and washes, should be with me this week.

:scratch::
Quick question:
Guys what colour do I need to paint the exhausts? I'm going for a fairly new look I think, and the exhausts I see on other tanks here look like they are just heavily rusted. At the moment I just thinking adding light rust in places including exhausts.
What would you suggest?

Thank you.

More mechanical adept people may be able to correct me, but ai think you should be fine with any degree of resting effect as the heat from the exhausts and overnight moisture would take their toll with surprising swiftness

From what I've seen on pictures, there would be significant surface rust on the exhausts as they were made from mild steel.

The colour would change from gunmetal to blued steel to rust fairly quickly (if that makes sense).

My hat is off to you sir, very fine work on your first kit. By the way, don't worry too much about the camo not being exactly defined for a few reasons :-

1. It is your kit, you can finish as you want to.
2. When tanks went into active service they were not painted uniformly, i.e. the mechanics didn't usually use the same masking templates(if templates were used at all)
3. Your weathering will hide the areas that you are not 100% happy with.

To my eye, you have done an outstanding job so far, :jd: :jd:

Did you use set then sol? I've done tests using set on my models and it damages the paint coats through the future. I may just be using too much though. Your decal looks PERFECT.

Well, painted exhausts with Tamiya Hull Red (XF-9) and tried a bit of chipping...
Probably will do less of it on top and hope with washes it will be a bit more settle. Not sure what I think of it yet.

Before everything, I'd just like to say that, 346 posts and this is your first model :jd: . That's an achievement in of itself.
If you ask me, I'd say its a badly damaged and beat up panther, but anyway, I think it could be a tad on the heavy side of chipping.
But actually AHHHHH,
Why is your first model so much better than mine???
I love the painting and although the chipping might be a bit extreme on the upper hull, the rest of the weathering looks good. :)

You may have overdone the chipping a bit, but that's dependant on what you're trying to depict. If you're trying to show a 30 year old vehicle that's been sitting in a field somewhere then you don't have enough. :)
If you're showing a tank that's been in service and in constant combat for a year with little or no surface maintenance then you nailed it!
She looks like a veteran. Most panthers didn't last long enough to look quite like that though.

However... the chipping job that you did... the method and the appearance is awesome. Multilayer chipping is tricky business and you applied it perfectly by the look of it. If you ad some rust effects to some of those large chips it would look amazing.
So it may be a bit too much... but it looks FREAKING AWESOME!!!! :)

Thank you guys. You are too kind :)
I just found it surprisingly enjoyable and relaxing painting the chips on and before I knew it is was a bit too late :D I had to finish it looking sort of even all around I thought. It wasn't very obvious to me that I was overdoing it till I started painting dark color on top...
A little bit annoyed as my original vision was completely different.
I do hope that washes will soften the look a little and I will try to add some rust to big chips.
It is a good learning exercise though. All in all I'm happy if not with the model yet but with the process of modeling itself :)

Leo your diorama looks awesome. That is two models, figures and a base. You doing fantastic job :th:

Hey Yevgeny, not sure how this one slipped me by, but I'm sure glad I caught up with it. For your first model you're doing a mighty fine job - hell, you're doing an excellent job for your 100th model. You're a natural at this.

Love the camo scheme and you're technique for chipping and personally I'm a big fan of heavy weathering - love it!! :th: :th: :th:

Thank you Very much guys.
I promise, no "shenanigans"
As Coen suggested I want to add some rust on the big chipped areas. Now how would i go about it? I don't have much in terms of paints at the moment and have no pigments/oils. I have full set of Ultimate washes, Mig's tools colours set, and some Tamiya's including Hull red.
Any suggestions?

Have you got any Humbrol enamels? They will make pretty good washes and weathering when thinned with white spirit.

Any old enamel paint will work as a wash Yev, enamels and oils are the same thing.
It's the colours that will be important. Browns and dark reds make good rust colours, but if you really want to make it easy on yourself, getting one of the rust sets from one of the over the counter companies will save you grief.
Maybe one of the AK interactive rust sets, or Mig's Ammo... any of those will do the job.
If you want to save some money though, buy some winsor newton oils (these are great colours...burnt umber, raw umber, burnt sienna, raw sienna, lamp black, titanium white, yellow ochre) and some odourless thinner and you can make all of your own in any variation for a decade before you need to by more.

Make no bones about it! For your first model you've dobe a fantastic job like what all the lads have said.
Yes you've done a little to much chipping like Coen said. But it's easy to get carried away like I always do. A good result for chipping is a piece sponge with hardly any paint left on it.
A good way to calm that camp paint down and merge the colour pattern is using Sin industries filter by Mig.
Well worth it I think.
You can run, but you'll only die tired!
