Can anyone recommend any good AFV Crew sets for Vietnam era models? I've seen, "Academy US Tank Crew Vietnam" and I thin Bravo 6 do some Resin. But I'm just looking for other options.

The Eduard Bicentennial phantom shown is a F-4N. F-4Ns never deployed to Vietnam. The first F-4N flew on June 4, 1972. The first renovated F-4Ns joined the fleet in February of 1973. Unless you plan to convert it to a F-4B or F-4J.

Also the Furball decals pictured are for F-4C/Ds. F-4C/Ds were used by the USAF in Vietnam. USAF also flew F-4Es in Vietnam. The Navy flew F-4B/Js in Vietnam. The F-4N is an upgraded F-4B used by the Navy/Marines after Vietnam.
Cheers for the info will probably save this then and think of something else.

Nige201980, Upon Further Research I found this:

http://www.history.navy.mil/avh-1910/APP26.PDF

Looks like VF-151 & VF-161 aboard USS Midway, late 1973, flew F-4Ns. Vietnam war officially ended 30 April 1975.

here are a couple of Images of VF-151 and VF-161. Images are from 1976 but their markings are the same as when deployed to Vietnam.

VF-151

VF-161

the VF-161 markings are easy to find. VF-151 not so much,

Thanks for going to the trouble to find that out mate. Vietnam is not one of my strong points so it really is helpful. You've given me plenty to think about.

Thanks again Robert.

OK guys in an earlier post I said I was going to do the 1:72 M163. Then I remembered that that kit was ear-marked for another GB.

So, I'm going to make something used by the other side.

AZ Models 1:72 Mig-17PF.

Will be a real challenge for me to give her some definition and depth and not just be a flat blob. Plus she's such a legend, need to do her justice.
Check out this technique. I am yet to try it myself but it looks interesting.

Thanks for the tip! I'll be getting an airbrush soon and I will definitely try out this technique!

I have a question for Lee. I'm going to build the Italeri 1:72 UH-34D Sea Horse. Does the kit decal option for an aircraft in 1962 still qualify for the Vietnam War? Is the start of the Vietnam War for the group build considered to be when U.S. ground troops were committed in 1965, or does the campaign allow for American assistance to ARVN forces starting in 1962? Thanks.

I would have to go with when regular combat units were deployed (boots on the ground), which was at the beginning of 1965.....:th:

I am thinking of making a small figure diorama this time, rather than a vehicle. I have seen some cool Masterbox figure sets which I think will work well.

Lee,

I would say the war began much earlier then 1965, I had posted the question, if the GB Covered the Indochina war, which is all in the same.

Here is blurb from the Vietnam Wall web page.

The First and the Last
The first American soldier killed in the Vietnam War was Air Force T-Sgt. Richard B. Fitzgibbon Jr. He is listed by the U.S. Department of Defense as having a casualty date of June 8, 1956. His name was added to the Wall on Memorial Day 1999.
First battlefield fatality was Specialist 4 James T. Davis who was killed on December 22, 1961.

The last American soldier killed in the Vietnam War was Kelton Rena Turner, an 18-year old Marine. He was killed in action on May 15, 1975, two weeks after the evacuation of Saigon, in what became known as the Mayaguez incident.
Others list Gary L. Hall, Joseph N. Hargrove and Danny G. Marshall as the last to die in Vietnam. These three US Marines Corps veterans were mistakenly left behind on Koh Tang Island during the Mayaguez incident. They were last seen together but unfortunately to date, their fate is unknown. They are located on panel 1W, lines 130 - 131.

The last pilot casualty in the country of Vietnam occured during the Embassy evacuation in Saigon, William C. Nystal and Michael J. Shea both died on the helicopter on April 30, 1975 approaching the USS Hancock in the China Sea (both are located at 1W, 124). The last pilot killed in the Vietnam war was Air Force helicopter pilot Second Lieutenant Richard Vandegeer who was killed on Koh Tang Island, Cambodia. This occured during the Mayaguez incident when his helicopter crashed on May 15, 1975. It is concidered the last combat action of the Vietnam War.

Going to try and build a C-141B Starlifter. Looking at the Dragon 1/200 kit, I just need to figure out how much Ill have to backdate and find correct decals. My father had thousands of flight hours in the Starlifter during and after Vietnam and I love to build him one.
