Oh. I wanted a resounding great review. I guess I'll hold off on getting that one.

It isn’t expensive and is on Amazon
Just a bit more theory and I am more practical.
I didn’t even check out the local library, they might have it
Speaking of reviews are you taking the small portable AB and hand held compressor to the lodge for some paint work when away from home ?
:cheers2:
I have done a couple videos of using it, just need another one to wrap it up and do a review. Will see if that get done this weekend

Just done some serious catching up - this is an awesome project mate :th:

I love the work you've already done on the shield gate & setting up the forced perspective shot with the X-Wings in play : : :

Really looking forward to seeing how you build this one out when the planet turns up :D

Yes those scenes are great.
I like the part where they cut to the blue one leader (Merrick) and he is laughing in the cockpit after destroying the AT-AT and the rebels are cheering his X Wing squadron’s arrival

Hot Saturday here, over 30*C. I did some stuff outside but had to bail once the sun came over the roof
So upstairs in The Lab with a/c and a fan on.
Worked more on the pink bum parts of the two X wings
Hogged out the center part and thinned it

Then a white hot look for the center

Neat touch with the pink engine pipes :th: - probably a bit too tight to cram a mini-LED (or fibre strand?) in there at that scale I guess?

Ya, thought about that but it is four led's for each craft, they would need to be tiny and then the lines to hide...just felt at this scale it wasn't worth it.
    Hence the fluorescent pink

So the X wings are pretty much done. I have a transport craft or two 3D printed for the middle of the gate as well.
Next step is the planet and the base :

I have an acrylic dome for the planet and was thinking a rotating base; one side has the two large X Wings and if you turn it the other side has just the smaller X Wings.

I was foraging in my garage and saw these

    Image
Not my bike, that hurts my bum to ride…the electrical reels I kept from the house build
Pulled one out and cleaned it from spider webs, critters and dust

    Image

    Image

The dome could go on top and the wiring and lighting sit in the center.
The bottom could rotate on a wood circle so the cords wouldn’t tangle
I can cut the middle down so it isn’t so tall
    Image

Will give it some more brainstorming

You should be careful leaving your garage open like that. Someone walks by and sees what you're working on? You could have the Canadian version of Homeland Security swooping in to make safe whatever you're working on! :eeek:

I am at numerous stumping points with this build’s display
        1. The base is too tall….easy to cut down but have to cut and re-thread the metal support rods inside
        2. The blue light is good but needs to sink deeper in the black plastic support so it can shine broader and avoid bumping into the curved acrylic planet from the inside
        3. I have to paint the inside one the acrylic planet to look like land, clouds and sky :
        4. The link of planet to base needs to be made somehow out of something
        5. Had work done on my knee and can hardly stand up let alone work in the garage with power tools

So instead I did rope threading on the Black Pearl at my lab’s desk

Yes knee's and the healing of after a op from what I've been told is a long way from some doctor saying you a have a little discomfort for a few weeks and reality. :(

On the bright side the ropes are going well.

Perhaps a smaller globe might work ?

"The link of planet to base needs to be made somehow out of something"
Could you use wire and curl it out and around and under so it isn't visible ?

"I have to paint the inside one the acrylic planet to look like land, clouds and sky"
Perhaps cut up a real earth globe ? or maybe something like this, but a bit larger.

        Interesting thoughts
The sticker would have to be big and the globe transparent
The knee gets a steroid injection next Saturday and I have a week off after that.

Sorry to hear you have been incapacitated with work done on your knee. I hope you are on the mend. I'm sure Blue leader will be happy to wait. He's having too much fun blowing up AT-ATs to worry about a bit of down time.

Its good you have an alternative with the Pearl to turn to. Dont see it as a retreat, rather just an advance in a different direction (USMC manual)
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Hope the knee comes good. I know what that's like. Couple of insane projects you have going on simultaneously. That shield gate is quite the inventive modelers nightmare.

Messing around with lighting and brainstorming
Tried some fiber optic lights , but you need a ton of them and they have to be in the visual plane or the look clear

The fun thing I found is the Mr Colour Fluorescent pink REALLY lights up under the blue light

Moving through a couple roadblocks for the base
Getting the light the proper height and exposure…requires a hole in the center of the flat acrylic base

Hole saw was too course so used this circle cutter death wheel of maimage…it is scary to use, but works

Replaced the steel support bolts with longer clear acrylic rods and they will support the gate
Now to figure the X wing attachments and drill three holes through the planet dome without cracking it

That's the problem with forced perspective setups, you need room to do it and then it only works from one angle. The center piece is the gate and the planet below, using only the smaller fighters may keep the attention where it needs to be. Either way, its still great and a proper achievement :th:

I love the ambition especially when you've got the smarts to do it

If you place it into a fenced area like a box or cylinder then the viewer would be forced to look from the intended angle, but would it work out. I don't know not something I've attempted yet.

I am thinking it is steel
It is certainly a woodworking tool as I used it to make a clock face
The horizontal bar allows for adjustment of size with a hex screw to lock it
It is has an unnerving rotation with that aluminum weight when used and scares me every time it spins
I am sure mine came from LeeValley Tools, but they are $15 on Amazon

Moving ahead with construction of the planet dome shape and mounting it to the base

Had to drill angled holes into the acrylic dome…lots of cracking catastrophe possibilities here
So taped off both sides, had a thick cardboard backing behind drill spot and used a small drill and then a step drill to enlarge the holes

        Image

This gave three matching holes for the acrylic rod supports to pass through

And then testing the support of the space gate and the X Wing

You both are at the crux of the problem…visual display
Do I make it tunnel vision so you only see the X Wing swooping down? OR do I make it visually interesting from a few angles?
I am leaning to the latter here and honestly, I am the only one who is gonna look at this thing
