I got some carbon fiber done last night after work
1/12 Scale Motorsports weave, nice stuff.
ImageImage
Usually a dream to work with; warm water, Ultimate decal solutions and a hairdryer usually conform everything. These shapes are difficult to deal with.
Usually I can find a spot to do a seam, but tried both fender surfaces as one piece...meh got folds. Tried both twice.
Not happy with them yet so no photos. I may have to just deal with a couple wrinkles and move on
I'm trying to do the front fender as well, Scott. Frustrating!! Have ripped it off twice and then another didn't even get the brush out as it was just completely wrong.

:wall: :wall: I'm definitely learning how to NOT do it.
Ya it has a weird shape I suppose. :wall:
The back fender went down a bit easier than the front.Absolute bugger.
I have tweaked my back this afternoon at work and haven’t gone to the model room to see how it finished off.

Personally for my tastes, I consider my 1/12 CF a bit too ‘course’ for this bike....in future I would use a 1/20 scale as I like a finer look to my CF. Personal taste

Ok a sore back carbon fiber exposé
It is done and rear fender is glued on. Acceptable, but not perfect.

:o Man!! That is coming along nicely! Looks great, and the CF detail is looking smokin' !!

I'm giving myself the night off - fought with it again last night before I got frustrated and had to walk away.
[have ordered more SMS carbon fiber decal sheets.  ]

Are you doing the Martini livery on yours, the white and blue one??
I'm sure you've guessed by now (if you care) that I'm trying to do mine in CF.

This one is going yellow white
I have another kit for the Martini
My CF has wrinkles and is not perfect, but I have done the fenders twice and will waste no more material or time on them
Hardest CF I have done

:thumb2:   Nice work on the C/F and looking good

Have you noticed with the newer decals that have clear parts in them to show the base color underneath like C/F or the wood type have less flexibility in them than say you normal kit decals. Both like to lay flat but resist kicking and screaming when they hit a curve or even just an edge lots of fettling needed with strong decal solutions to get them down.

And last of all its going on a treat but that bit needs going over so you give it some attention and the whole decal moves :wall: :wall: :wall: :eeek: :eeek: :eeek: start again time if it cant be saved

Oh yeah that is pretty shiny front fender...it is strategic photography so you don't see the wrinkles

I love doing CF decals and usually have had good luck with them...but yes they are a bit fragile
The extra strong Ultimate solution is really good at bending them into shape, you just can't manhandle the decal after you get the solution on it or you will muff it up as it makes the decal very soft...some very quickly and some it will destroy.
I beat the snot out of these CF's to try and get them to form. :bash:

Just trying to put some scale perspective on what I'm looking at. Saw it was 1/12, its an awesome looking beast, it looks like its got real weight to it. Cracking work so far.

And you're right, cars and bikes are not my thing but its always good to follow ones idols/mates/raconteurs/dafties!
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Also, does the kit come with the rider? I never seem to see these kits built with the pilot in the seat.

Morning light is better today, so some close detail shots of the wiring on the side covers...won’t see these again with fairings screwed on

Speaking of fairing attatchments, think I will try a removable magnetized method instead of screws
I have these small pico rare earth metal magnets to try

Err, excuse me but it’s a legit question. I know nothing about bike kits and wondered what it was for. I though it was some sort of wiring kit for the main headlight maybe or is it like that on the real thing? I’m not asking why you bothered to do it.

No, not going to light up this one with LED’s or anything if that is what you were thinking
It is the wiring harness of the real bike to add realism

Progress on the magnetized fairing attachments.

Image

Bit more work than expected, of course, as the little pico magnet at the top near the handle bars couldn’t support the fairing weight very well. So I added the stronger small silver bar magnet in between...deduced as I was struggling to keep the little pico buggers off the bar magnet. Then the lightbulb went off to use it in between

Red arrows show the magnet locations

Nice work on the magnets. Great to be able to have the on/off option without any messing around. Tamiya do a similar thing on their new 1/32 WW2 aircraft kits. Tiny magnets on the inside of the engine covers and even on the little fairings on the undercarriage so you can screw in the undercarriage and drop the little covers on around the oleo legs.

Beautiful work, what scheme are you going for?

Stokesy44 wrote: Tue Jun 02, 2020 8:55 am Nice work on the magnets.

I like using the rare earth magnets and these little guys are great...but buggers to manipulate.
Anything metal and boom off they go. It is so easy to lose them.
With the nice kit detail I think Tamiya would be smart to incorporate removable magnetic fairings for sure into their motorcycle kits.
My scheme plan is yellow/white

I got the side fairings’ magnets dialed in and they click into place with decent retention
Three small magnets inside each fairing

Image
Then they click to the larger bar magnet by the handle bars and lower pico magnet

Image

plus join at the bottom front to two of the pico magnets
Image

Just as I was patting my back, I realized that the front nose cowl would also screw into where I put the bar magnets
So I will have to notch these out to let it just slide in
Image
...which it will as I adjusted the magnets to allow it

That's a beautiful looking paint scheme. Shows the bike off without being overdone with tons of sponsorship :th:
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Looks great, Scott (Great Scott! - sorry... ) I've tried to order those magnets for about 3 months now. With the 'Rona, I guess everybody got some but me.

This is gonna be great when painted up - can't wait to see yours buttoned up! :thumb2:

Usually I have it all in paint, decals and clear before realizing I have to hack away something I forgot or didn’t expect :bash:
I am trying to have some forethought here and get it done before any primer

Magnets were inexpensive and easy to get before coronavirus
When you can get them, I suggest an assortment of sizes and shapes so they cover more bases for your builds

Alrighty I got the a windshield fairing cut, trimmed and fitting decently.
Here she is with all front fairings on in bare white styrene

As I research this bike to add some wires and stuff, you get to reading....
Ducati put the rear suspension arms and spring to the LHS Of the bike, thus creating room so they could pivot the ‘v’s’ of the engine heads more toward the rear wheel. This gave a better balance and slightly lower center of gravity to the bike. Most sport bikes have the spring and rear suspension in the middle, right in front of the rear wheel so the engine v’s are rotated more forward as there is no space. Interesting engineering
Then the Italian flair for design and you have a lovely beast :D
