Getting real close now...and I found a helper, Kevin
I settled on a pattern for the safety wire on the sides





Tie rod, steering assembly, leather hood straps, exhaust system and then thoughts switch to a dio. Maybe

I'm glad Kevin is there to help, he seems dressed for work at least. All this AND a possible dio...wow.

Some good swear words thrown out getting the steering linkage and especially the pathetically engineered tie rods hooked up.
I pretty much remade them with sleeved brass rods so they would link and I had to wire the steering end together.

Working on the exhaust system.
Wound up replacing the brass kit tubes with aluminum ones and flared the pipe tips a bit...'cause I like that.


Underside photos shows pipes and also the tie rods I heavily modified so they actually are strong enough to to stay on and work

So close now...I'd be unable to do anything else but work on this were it me...

I have to think of a diorama now or at least some kind of display

Boy, this guy is gonna need some major plastic surgery to fit in that cockpit


I don't think Tamiya and Revival are on the same page for what 1/20 scale is.

You have done well with that old Casadio kit. Reputation has it they were a bit of a nightmare even for the most experienced modeller to build and of questionable accuracy.
At the beginning of this thread, mention was made that the kit was in white metal? I thought that the originals had die cast metal parts. Much harder than white metal, so please correct me if I am wrong.

I have drooled over the 1/12th scale MFH T35 kit since its release but could not justify the cost of over £500. However, my prayers have been answered by Italeri announcing a T35 in 1/12 scale due for release this year 2022. If it is as detailed as the MFH kit it will be a great seller. My guess is that it will be around the £150 mark. One that I can afford! Yes!

This was certainly white metal, easily filed and polished
It is the same as the two MFH kits I have
The steering column was stainless steel and completely useless so I changed it for aluminum rod

Yes get the Italeri kit, very interested to see if it’s quality is as nice as the Alfa Romeos they have been making

I've had this kit for years - "one day I'll build that!" - love the subject matter.
Our club (ESSMC, here in Victoria, Australia) has a Pizza & Plastic day where 20+ members gather to work on their pet project, and we all get to see what the other are working on. Me, being a lazy sod, decided to take this kit to start off, seeing as it didn't appear to need paint, or glue.........
So I started the day filing away whitemetal seamlines.......and ended the day still filing. I did manage to screw some of the parts together, but found the problems you did, in that the screws wouldn't go in far enough to clamp pieces together.....etc etc.....So I packed up, went home, and laid the whole project out on my workdesk, where I discovered the true nature of this Italian model, thinking "this is another model I'm not gonna finish!!" Then I searched for a review & found yours.

So much for just a simple screw-together kit! No wondeer there are so few seen completed.
However, I am heartened by your ingenious-ness, and I have used brass tubes to fix axles, steering columns and the like on plastic. Fortunately for us modellers, they are conveniently made in sleeveable sizes. So, I'm gonna "give it a real-good crack", and seen what I can come up with. I must admit that I'll be using some of your ideas along the way, but hope that I can contribute some of my own madness en route.

I make the long winded build threads so I can document what the heck I did to put a model together.
I forget so much of my own builds and often refer back to double check a technique or paint colour.
So yes these are a B of a kit to build but are very rewarding
There is another great build of the Audi four wheel racer from another member and he did a great job

I got another Revival kit at a local swap meet for an absolute steal price as the guy found he was in way over his head and just wanted to unload it. The Mercedes racer, I will find a picture.
Here it is. The metal spoked wheels are worth more each than what I paid. But he wanted it out of his life and I was happy to take it off his hands

At the moment it's 88 pages and just over 7000 words - taking up 12,111kb
When I have it finished I will reduce it to a .pdf. I still have a bit of "jazzing up" to improve it.

Hi Twokidsnosleep and RogerTee55; I'm the bloke who built the Auto Union hill climb version of the Revival kit. As a matter of fact I've built four Revival kits over the last few years which also include the Mercedes W-154 shown in this blog. My other two are Ferrari's. I can easily say that every one of them has challenged me sometimes more than I wanted but the end result is indeed rewarding and unique compared to most auto models.









Scott, way to stick with this one. I had some difficulty finding a racer for the Auto Union cockpit too. One thing about your driver is that a majority of his body will be seen, so modifying a 1:18 figure will be tough to accomplish and still look clean and correct. You would think that being 1:20 scale, any other 1:20 scale racing figure "should" work but that is normally not the case. In my experience, every one of my driving figures I've add to a kit had to be highly modified at almost every joint of their body as well as his bum and torso.













I'm eager to see what you come up with for the driver and diorama. Keep at it, it's really nice so far.....

A long time and a lot of work on the Bothersome Bugatti since I last contacted you......

This little blue car fought me to the end - if you've seen my Scalemates album, you'll know that...
The Monday prior to the EXPO competition I made the decision to reveal the bonnet hinge as I had seen every one of these cars with the hinge bare of paint.
What a stupid, stupid thing to do - the masking I used managed to peel some of the original paint off the bonnet.................some words were said....
I vented my rage by stripping ALL the paint off the bonnet (both sides) with dremel & wire brush.
I then chiselled & gouged the sink marks off the inside of the bonnet - that felt better. - I wanted the inside of the bonnet bare anyway.
Contacted some of my modelling buddies & devised a suitable recovery.
Warmed up the White Primer & French Blue rattle cans & my good friend Harry offered to come over to assist.
He managed to prevent me from flooding the paintwork and we got 1 coat of primer & 3 coats of Blue on the bonnet.
I had masked off the hinges beforehand. That was Tuesday!!
Wednesday I left the bonnet alone & worked on the bonnet straps & spare tyre racks & straps & made my own buckles for each.
Thursday morning I lifted the bonnet masking carefully & touched up/scraped away where needed....
EXPO entries started from 16:00 on Thursday, but not for me... - I went to EXPO and set up the club table...
Thursday evening I carefully applied all the decals - 5 x #8 and then the "Bugatti" badge - which wouldn't stick - ended up using superglue to stick it!!! (and it's still crooked!!)
Entered the EXPO at 09:00 Friday morning................whew!

Saturday: I received a "commendation" for the Bugatti, behind some splendid models & paint jobs (I was never in the paint job race anyway!)

Sunday Presentations: About the 3rd last presentation is that of the "Bill Hamer Memorial Automotive Modelling Excellence Award"
Was really paying attention.....then heard "Bugatti Type 35 'Targa Florio'" announced - Hey! That's me!!
Absolutely flabbergasted!!
This is one of the most prestigious awards of the EXPO!! My good mate Harry has one from 2017 for his delicious 1/12 Ford GT40 Mk-II

and I have to thank you, Scott, for your lesson of persistence in YOUR version of this "Bothersome Bugatti" and your wonderful blog.
I most certainly was influenced by your modelling expertise, and I hope you don't mind that I took some similar tangents to you, on this build.
I certainly learned a lot on this project.

Those old Casadio Revivals were not exactly the brilliant kits they were hyped up to be when they first appeared. So this T35 build needs credit where it is due.

As if the kit wasn't difficult enough, why use Photobucket for the pictures? Why would anyone want to look at pictures from that hosting site with their ugly water mark obliterating a lot of the pictures? Protect more of your memories for less ! Are they having a laugh ?

My biggest failure looking at forums generally is that the subject matter catches my eye and I tend to not look at the date of the original post.

You did well with that old Casadio T35 kit. A member of a local club I belong to brought along one of the Casadio Alfa kits that he inherited from someone who attempted to start it. Not a pretty sight! He wanted some advice about building it going away from his usual plastic kits. I offered what advice I could but knew that it would be a struggle. Not sure if he bothered with it or not in the end.

I love these kits, still have a Mercedes to do.
The solid feel of metal and the weight in your hands is cool
Plus they lend to customizing and modifying
I would love to get my mitts on a big Manufacturer Hiro Kit MFH like a 1/8 Cobra or a Black Shadow bike. Those are crazy engineered kits

Photobucket nearly single handily destroyed photo based forums like this one with their policy change from a free platform to charge
The rise of social media FB, Instagram then nailed the coffin
We suffer a slow death here but it is hard to leave with all the friends and the amount of hobby work documented

That's the problem with photo hosting sites.
All very well when free to use, but a change of ownership or policy (pay up or your pictures will be locked) can have a devastating effect on forums using pictures downloaded from them. Unfortunately when this happens many of the individuals using them don't bother to pay up simply because they still have their pictures saved on their own computers or other devices, not thinking about or forgetting the ones they shared on forums.I
Collateral damage is probably the most appropriate term to use when hosting sites change their terms and conditions and photos suddenly 'disappear' from forums.
