Air Brush on way

Post by Donkeywalloper »

Well after all the very good advice and instruction, the very nice chaps at Air-Craft.net are dispatching me a H&S Evolution Solo.
I was going to go for the Ultra 2-1 but with a bit more Birthday money I fancied up-grading (you pay for what you get).
Also, not through Air-Craft but Amazon I got a good deal on a AS186 (£76.90).
Air-Craft had a AS18-2 but that is without an Air Tank and the monies did not stretch to the Sparmax TC-610H Airbrush Compressor.
So all the kit and cleaning kit and Spray Booth is on the way.
Lots of testing and playing and getting the handle of AB after a 30 year break is going to be fun.
I want to thank you all for you kind words and help.
Here's to wonderful times :th:

Despite a very crappy day (spent weekend wittering over a possible Root Canal Job today and then finished a doozer of a Night-Shift this morning), ended up ultimately in Dentist chair and under went the 1st of three sessions in chair for Root Canal work (two fillings in 48 years and great teeth but the molar with the filling gets decay....Excellent)...
Anyhoo.....at least when I get to work tonight I have two packages in countdown to AB arriving (should be tomorrow).
One box contained Ultimate AB Cleaner and Thinner and a packet or "Thinnies". Thanks Paul for advice.
The other from www.scalemodelshop.co.uk of various bits including as follows:
1 x Bottle of Mig Pigment Gun-Metal.
1 x each of Mig Acrylic Crystal Glass, Crystal Red and Crystal Green (never used but going to try out on Jackal lights).
Then one each of the following Mig Acrylics (went down Vallejo but trying all of the regular paints to get an idea of the technology and improvements since my days 30 years ago at bench with Humbrol Enamels).
..Nato Green, Rust Tracks, Sand Yellow.
Spent last night doing piles of paperwork of mostly hand writing 40 year old SOP's (Standing Order Procedures....yawn), and in between that got to sit with a mug of tea and a sandwich and watch the very talented Coen. The man is awsome. The work he does is brilliant :
Peace and Love to all.

As I posted on Alextheblue's KV2 build, AB D-Day has landed  .
Well last night actually when I got in for work it landed. Trouble was the big bloody box from www.air-craft.net sat in office unopened due to a major incident occurring at work.
So after limited sleep the box was opened and all the fun began.
Image
What a beauty.
With the compressor came two basic cheap AB and as I said to Alex, getting the cheap AB out and then the Evolution was like the difference between a Paper Dart and a F15.
The action, oh the action of the trigger is like butter.
Image
Image
The compressor is so much quieter than my last unit in 1980 which rattled and rolled like Chuck Berry on broken glass.
Image
The Spray booth is neat as a box of frogs. At a button the lead zips away and the included turntable is smooth and decent.
Everything is so fine (I am moved to little tears..... :ooops: )
I'm a bit knackered and so the testing of kit can wait till weekend, when as a novice I may write a little review on a basic set-up and what I think.
Peace and love to you all from p**s wet Burton.

Hi there,

I'm in exactly the same boat as you, 30 or so years away from modelling and now back to it with a passion! I have never owned an airbrush before, and after just finishing off my first model using hand-brushing I really think an airbrush may be in order. Although, hand brushing is fine I just don't feel that even with a lot of practice that the finish will be close to that found using an airbrush.

So.... I was wondering if you could give me any advice/feedback on the airbrushing kit you bought as the setup I had already specc'ed up was pretty much identical to yours, apart from the airbrush.

After now using it for a while, do you find the spray booth effective enough to eliminate any spray into the room, and how good is it an getting rid or odour. I like the portable nature of this particular spray booth (as it seems pretty quitet from the You Tube review vids I've watched) as I don't currently have anywhere permanent to set up shop in the house (not until I fix the garage door, build some shelves and move the contents of the garden shed to it :) ).

Also, how are you finding the compressor - good starter airbrush compressor? It seems to be the most popular and available compressor out there, and seems pretty good value with the air tank. The TC-610H seems like a nice little unit, though I'm not sure I can justify the extra £100 cost of it at the moment.

I was thinking of going with the H&S Ultra 2 in 1, was there a reason you went for the Evolution Solo instead (and forfeited the 2 in 1 option) - is it that much better?

Any feedback or advice much appreciated, thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Simon

Sweet - you must have felt like a kid on christmas day morning !!!

That airbrush looks very nice, its interesting to hear you compare it with the cheaper airbrushes that were shipped with the compressor.

I`ve got the same compressor (upgraded from a much cheaper nastier unit) and I love the 3l tank and the quiet operation of it, I just need to get a better airbrush, I`ve go a nice badger but I think H&S are going to get some of my ill gotten cash.

Will be interesting to hear yer thoughts on the brush once you`ve gotten to grips with it as it might just tip my wallet over the edge again.. am "saving" domestic credits to get a nice one hopefully in a couple of months, probably from the same place you got yours from, looks like a good shop.

Also I`d like to hear if that booth is any good, I`ve had my eye on one of them for a while, sitting next to the open window just doesn`t quite do it !!.

Happy modelling !

Hi Simon

My advice is to speak to the chaps at www.air-craft.net, that was the advice from Paul and Lee and it was great advice. I had some money from Birthdays and O/T and the missus had given consent so half the problems were gone :thumb1:
My thoughts on the Spray Booth......it's okay.
The acrylics are dealt with i.e smell and vapour.
I did find though that prolonged spraying more than an hour then the missus was smelling it down-wind so to speak, and even with door closed.
Man-Cave window open and exhaust poking through. But any wind coming to the window, and vapours are back in room. That's whey I wear a 3M mask (also from Air-Craft) .
The portable nature of the booth is brilliant for me. I just cannot have at the moment a dedicated "pitch" for all of my kit. So I do have to pack away after each session.
Obviously if money was no option then you can go as mad as you like.......
It's a great buy for the money.
The Compressor is brilliant. The price and quality is top notch. One thing I have noticed and wonder how many it's caught out...prolonged use makes bits of compressor hot. I mean hot enough to not want to cuddle unit :th: For a starter unit its not going to be beaten. Early days and all that but its impressed me and I really do take convincing.... :) Go with it and if you want to upgrade say down the line, then fine but this is a good unit for starter and medium modellers.
The AB question, mmmmh....
I researched and listened and thought good and hard. I'm not rolling in money and then again who is. I tossed and turned and thought long about the Ultra and the Evolution.
My honest opinion of the process was this. A. It was a toss of a coin. B. By as much as you can, i.e. More bang for the Dollar.....
The Evolution is awesome. Its a joy to use and really easy to strip and clean. The more you use it the more you love it (like the wife  ).
If you need any more advice or questions answered just PM me or reply. I am more than happy to answer questions on this kit I have.
NB: Whatever AB, Compressor or Air Booth you buy, please include the cleaning kit, especially the Ultimate Cleaner and the little Cleaning Kit with Reamer (http://www.air-craft.net/acatalog/Nozzl ... Brush.html), its a great bit of kit for cleaning the nozzle.
Take care Simon :cheers2:

Hi Sean

See my comments to Simon. I had a Badger 30 years ago and was sailing towards Badger again, but the reviews and the chats about H&S had me sold.
They are German engineering and that says it all....its all quality and fine engineering.
Pay as much as you can and to be honest you will not be disapointed.
Speak to chaps at www.air-craft.net, seriously they are top notch.
Any other questions let me know.
Good luck mate.

Hi John,

Thanks for taking the time to reply, much appreciated.

I gave the chap at Air-Craft.net a call today to confirm what bits and pieces I'd need, he was really helpful indeed as you mentioned. Looks like I wouldn't get much change out of £400, though this would get me all the necessary items to get started, which I shouldn't have to upgrade for a while.

I was still trying to justify the cost of buying an airbrush setup in my own mind, though this evening when finishing off my Airfix 1:72 Spitfire I couldn't help avoid the realisation that the result I was getting hand brushing was, well... totally crap! Despite thinning my Valero Color paints down, it still looks as though the Spitfire had been the victim of someone who'd painted it in fence paint, complete with very subtle brush marks. Admittedly, much of this is probably down to my hand brushing skills (or lack of), though even factoring in that it still seems to me that airbrushing seems to provide a much nicer finish, hopefully even to a complete newbie like myself.

Having the space to set up a modest airbrushing environment for my models is a real consideration, though I should be fine with the portable spray booth. The chap at Air-Craft.net mentioned that they no longer stocked the small AS18-2 compressor units due to a high failure rate and that they'd just become more trouble than they were worth to continue selling. This has swayed me a little to take a look at the TC610H (that Paul has just taken ownership of), though the only issue with this is the cost (£165) and my trying to justify this additional outlay (and the battering my bank balance would take) for an initial airbrush setup. Hmmm, though it is tempting to just go for it and "buy once, buy right).

As for the AB, I think I would go with the H&S Ultra 2 in 1 as it seems to hit the sweet spot of bang for buck especially when just having forked out for the rest of the AB kit. I'd like to think that when I get really good in the future I could then justify an H&S Infinity. That is one sweet looking AB.

I'd also be looking at getting the 3M face mask and filters, I won't be scrimping in this dept. :)

Thanks again for your reply, and I enjoy reading your updates - keep up the good work.

Cheers,

Simon

Way to go Simon.

I must admit I spent (don't tell anyone just between you and me... ), £265 at Air-Craft.
I bought the AS18-2 Compressor off Ebay for £70.
I to would love the H&S Infinity and I suppose will have one one day.
Your right though about the pay now and get it right. If you love modelling and all it entails, enjoy it and spend.
Once you have bought it you'll not have to fork out again.
I have to admit this whole hobby is crippling my Bank Balance but hey, live now..... :ugeek:
Your going to love this when it arrives mate.
Can't wait to see results.

Hi John,

Thanks for the kind encouragement. After speaking with my better half, Mrs TechHead, this evening she was also very encouraging in getting an AB setup, she mentioned she is very pleased to see me so enthusiastic and enjoying something as much as my modelling. I'm a very lucky bloke indeed. For me it has proven to be something of a real effective way of relaxing as well, especially after a rough 12 months.

So I have decided to go for it and take the plunge, Mrs T has kindly said that she'll buy me the H&S airbrush as an early birthday present.

After seeing Paul's piccies of the TC610H AB compressor today I think I may have been swayed to pay the extra and be done with it.

I'll be giving the chaps at Air-Craft.net a call tomorrow morning to place the order. I should have it by the weekend - hurray! I'll also place an order for some AB cleaning fluid as well, and have to figure out how to dilute down my existing Vallejo Model Colour paints.

This'll be great timing for my starting my D-Day GB...

All very exciting!!! :)

All the best and happy modelling,

Simon

Simon
That awesome that simon you wont go wrong with any of that kit (although i would get Ultimate thinner and cleaner though ;) )

Martin is a great guy, make sure to mention ISM when you make your order :thumb2:

Hi Paul,

Just ordered the Ultimate AB cleaner and thinner - how's that for keen, before I've even bought my new AB setup! ;)

Not sure who dispatches the Ultimate goodies, though would be great to have them by Friday if possible so I can try out my new toy (hint, hint)...

Thanks again to everyone for your input and great advice... Look forward to displaying my first efforts with an AB (however bad)....

Cheers,

Simon

Hi Simon

You have a super supportive wife like mine and that is great.
She has noticed a real change in my demeanour and attitude.
When you get that huge box you'll be like a kid at Christmas, Birthday and everything inbetween...
Take your time and play with paper first.
I nicked, cough borrowed a Flip-Chart Pad from work and just practised lines and spray patterns on my first go.
Give yourself plenty of time to play. The main thing is enjoy.
Best of luck Simon.

Hi John,

Well, I pulled the trigger on placing the order with Martin at Air-Craft.net today and am very excited at receiving my new AB kit, which should be here on Monday.

I went for gold and paid a bit extra on my original plans for the airbrush and the compressor. I ended up buying the following goodies:

H&S Evolution Silverline 2 in 1 Airbrush - decided to pay the extra and future proof myself by going with the Evolution instead of my intended Ultra 2 in 1. Also my kind wife said she'd buy it for me as an early birthday present.
Air Cap, Fineline 0.15/0.2mm
Sparmax TC-610H Airbrush Compressor
Airbrush Portable Spray Booth
3M 7500 Half Mask & Filters
SCP- 700 Cleaning Station
Airbrush Cleaning Brush Set

Also, from Ultimate:

Ultimate AB Cleaner
Ultimate Thinners

I'll post some pics once it arrives.

Thanks again,

Simon

PS. @Paul: I gave a good plug for ISM :)

Nice one Simon, way to go, now the brush lines on your models should be a thing of the past.
Good luck and have great weekend.

That is so true, (re: modelling) definitely a case of "whatever makes you happy dear" :)

Have a great weekend too, and hope you get some spare time to get some modelling done.

All the best,

Hi,

Well I finally bit the bullet and received my airbrushing setup... Wow, what a difference to hand brushing!

I'm still very much learning through trial and error, though the results (albeit basic) so far have been really good.

I can definitely recommend dealing with Martin at Air-Craft.Net - very helpful and great service!

Here is the kit I ended up buying. :)

Lovely Jubbly.
Take your time with practice.
I "borrowed" a Flip-Chart pad from work and spent ages "doodling" away with different Pressures and Paint mixes.
have a great time.
