Airfix 1/72 MiG 15 x2

Post by chief5437 »

These are the kits I've bought for this GB. I'm going to start with a pair of Migs.

Image

Here's a pic of the three sprues. It looks like a nice kit so far, must be a new(ish) tooling. Can't see a hint of flash anywhere, and all the ejection marks seem to be in places that will be covered.

Image

Recessed panel lines are nice, some may say a bit deep, but I like them. I've found on some kits with fine lines, by the time I've got primer, paint layers, gloss, decals, gloss, weathering, matt coats on, they can all but disappear. But that's just me!

Next is a pic of the decals, canopy, destructions and the two kits together. Just to show I haven't already built one! Lol.

Image

The decals look nice, but I think they might be a bit 'orangey' although this might be alright with the paint scheme I've got in mind.
The canopy is one piece, which normally would pee me off, but my display idea will require closed canopies, so I'll let Airfix off this time.

I'll be doing these OOB, closed canopy so no need to detail the cockpit. I'll only swap guns etc for brass rod if reqd, but as the parts look so crisp I'm hoping I won't have to.

Right, I'd best get cracking, only 4 months left! Lol

Thanks for looking guys, and good luck with your builds!

Cheers guys.

@FD hmmm :  I wonder indeed! Lol! :hb: :clap2: for Sunday mate!

I've got a little production line going on here. Cockpits done.

No raised detail on the instruments, decals only. Again, if I were having canopies open I'd be disappointed, but with this build it won't matter. Same for the rest of the cockpit/pilots. Just gotta make a harness out of tamiya tape, and they can go in.

Cheers guys!

Hey guys, thanks for your comments.

A bit more progress from last night.

First pic shows the exhaust nozzle. The kit part is on the left, as you can see, its quite shallow. so i drilled it out and added a bit of drinking straw to give it a bit of depth.

Image

I got the fuse, wings and stabs together. Fit was ok, a bit of a step on the fuse seam and a slight gap on the nose. And a slightly bigger one on the wing roots.

Started filling and sanding. It doesn't look like it in the pic, but the fuse seam is done. For the wing roots I used some squadron green putty mixed with cellulose thinners. This makes a liquid filler that you can apply with a brush or toothpick.

Finally, the wing fences looked way too thick, so I've thinned them down with a sanding stick.

Image

That's it for now, hope to get some more done tonight.

Thanks for looking!

Very nice little entry you have

Those migs look like a great pair, they are coming along fantastically and in record time

Is that yellow tape to mask the filler? if so that is a great technique :thumb1:

Yes DC, that's the idea. If you mask the gap as close as you can, it stops the filler getting everywhere and stops you sanding away any surrounding detail. In theory! Lol

Hey guys! Thanks for the comments!
@coen if I could build like you I'd take a bit more time over things!

As an aside, I'd like to thank you for the time you put into the forum. It seems that you come on here either just before or just after I visit, and I've seen that you take time out to comment on just about every post on here. Just wanted to say that it's most appreciated, it's always nice to see that someone has taken the time to look/comment on threads. So thanks dude!

So here's my latest update....

First pic is just the main antenna masts. I thought they were a bit too thick, so I've sanded them down. Kit piece on the right, sanded part on the left.

Image

Second pic is just a gun sight I added from sheet acetate painted with clear green. Not strictly accurate, but adds a little interest.

Image

Next up is the one piece canopy. Looking at ref pics, they are missing a central frame spar, so I've added that using scrap PE. not sure why Airfix missed this. If they sculpt the rest of the frame, why not this bit?!
Also in this pic you can see that I've filled the holes for the weapon pylons, as they aren't present on the configuration I'm building.

Image

Fourth pic is just the glass masked up.

Image

Number five,
On the left is my usual way of doing things. I stick the u/c panels in with white tac. That way I can paint, knowing I'm getting the same colour on all parts. As I'm doing two kits at the same time, I thought I'd test two ways of doing it. So the kit on the right will have the panels painted separately. Just out of curiosity.

Image

And finally, canopies, guns and masts added. Ready for primer.

Image

All is going to plan so far, famous last words! Lol!

Thanks for checking it out.

Cheers.

Seriously though. You are making wicked progress.
I envy the time you've had this weekend to build.
You certainly didn't waste it.

I'm seeing double.....

Ever tried liquid mask for masking canopy and windows?
Great stuff, applied with paintbrush it runs exacly over the windows to cover them.
When dry and painted, you can peel it of with a toothpick.
But thats my way!

Awesome progress Chief! Keep it up!

Thanks for the comments lads.

@coen yeah, got a few hours in this weekend, I have a very patient girlfriend, lol!
I chopped the guys head off and repositioned it so he's looking at his wingman.

@FD I've got some of that liquid mask stuff but had varying results with it. Do you remember that phantom I did in tiger stripes? What a nightmare! I prefer tamiya tape for canopies. But that's just me!

Hey guys!
So for one reason or another, I haven't had chance to do any modelling for about 3 or 4 weeks now. But I'm back on it now.

Looks like there's been loads going on since I was last on here, it's gonna take ages to catch up!

On with the business.

These pics are as far as I got a few weeks back.

I needed to make some flaps for the Migs so I cut some from evergreen card

Image

I then taped them together and drilled holes through to try and get a 'machined' look.

Image

I then glued them onto some acetate sheet to form the 'skin'.

Image

Then came a coat of Russian looking interior colour.

Image

And similar treatment for the under side of the wings.

Image

Next up was the nose wheel, here's the kit part,

Image

And after a little work. Apologies for focus!

Image

So that's as far as I got. Last night I got some paint and decals on.

Image

While I was putting the nose number decals on I realised I'd be making the same plane twice! So I quickly lopped off the 3 from one of the decals to make 'Red 84' and 'Red 384'. If I'd thought about it beforehand I could've chopped all the numbers up and made them a bit more dissimilar. But as I didn't notice til I was actually placing the decal, it'll have to do.

I believe these two have been flying round my den while I've been busy, as one of them seems to have lost an antenna, and they have both had canopy mishaps! The antenna won't be a problem, but I'm waiting on Airfix to send replacement canopies.

So that's where we are right now, I'd best go have a look round and catch up, it's good to be back!

Cheers guys

Thanks for the kind comments guys!

@ joesdad, the red is Revell Aqua Color Fiery, silk matt, with a coat of klear and a dark wash.

I like the revell acrylics for brush painting but they can take a bit of getting used to in the airbrush.
