Tomcat's 1/35 Resicast Ford-T Gun Carrier

Post by Tomcat64 »

So my entry for this GB will be my first foray into an all-resin kit with this offering from Resicast
Image

Stay tuned - I'll be back later with photos of parts!

Edit: As promised I'm back with the parts - there are no sprues as such and since all the small, loose parts had the carpet monster salivating I'm going to keep them bagged up for now and will show the individual parts when I come to each section of the build
Image

As expected the detail on the resin is very sharp
Image

The instruction booklet
Image

This lists the parts and then has a series of photos showing them assembled
Image

So we'll see how well this works in practice
Image

There are no decals or paint instructions - just black & white photos of the finished item as it "should" look
Image

As well as the Resicast driver I'm intending to use this box to create a small vignette
Image

Unfortunately I've not been able to find a lot of information specifically about the Ford-T Vickers Gun Carrier so here's some general information regarding the use of the Model T in the First World War courtesy of curbsideclassic.com

From an automotive perspective, World War I was a major turning point; previously, in every war ever waged equipment and supplies were moved in and around the battle areas by some combination of horsepower or manpower. World War I saw the first widespread use of motorized vehicles in various supporting roles. Even during the first battles of the war in 1914, the Ford Model T was a major player as many privately owned Model T’s were commandeered for various military uses.

Knowing the tactical advantages provided by automotile use, both Great Britain and France approached the subject of acquiring Model T trucks for various military purposes early on in the war. Henry Ford, very much a proponent of the isolationist movement prevalent in the United States prior to its war entrance in 1917, was not exactly cooperative with the request. While Ford wanted nothing to do with the war effort during this time, he did authorize the sale of a modest number of Model T chassis to the British military strictly for ambulance use.
Upon the United States becoming involved in the war, Ford’s mood shifted to fully supporting the effort. His change of heart prompted his selling the United States military thousands of chassis for various uses. In an effort to fulfill orders, Ford even pulled units from routine stock out of circulation to more rapidly respond to the war effort.

It should also be noted the chassis most often supplied was the basic and ordinary Model T chassis (not the heavier duty Model TT) upon which any number of aftermarket bodies could be fitted. It is even suspected the first set of chassis sent to Europe were designed such that the shipping crate could be repurposed to construct the box body for the T. The United States military was a huge purchaser of the Model T, allowing the American Expeditionary Force to be the first truly motorized military operation in history. There was logic with that decision; all materiel had to be shipped to Europe and that was always a mulit-week endeavor. Sending horses meant some amount of acclimation time after arrival whereas a Model T was ready to go.

At its peak, the American Expeditionary Force would have 60,000 motorized vehicles of various varieties in the European Theatre; of those, approximately 15,000 were Model T’s. Even though the United States had the largest number of Model T’s in use, the total number used by the American Expeditionary Force is difficult to determine. The length of time the United States was involved in the war was relatively short. This created some anticipated needs to be eliminated, orders being filled just after the cease-fire, or cancelled entirely.

Early on Henry Ford, in his staunch opposition to the war before United States involvement, refused to do anything out of the ordinary for military purchases. This caused a vast number of deliveries to be of a chassis in standard black. It was not uncommon for GI’s to paint a Model T in olive drab upon delivery.

The Model T made a superb ambulance for the times and 5,340 were ordered for ambulance use by the United States Army.

France also saw the quality and potential of the Model T as an ambulance, ordering 2,400 for front line field use. According to information the Model T was the first choice of the French High Commission responsible for medical affairs as it had earned a superior rating for field use. Despite Ford’s initial reluctance to supply ambulances to European countries, the Model T still served the French and British Armies in both Europe and Africa.

Through some creative procurement via third parties and sheer industriousness, a Ford dealer in Paris was able to acquire chassis and assemble 11,000 Model T’s for use by the French Army. In turn, British forces were able to amass a fleet of Model T’s that numbered between 20,000 and 30,000.

The Jeep has certainly become associated with the Allied efforts of World War II. While one does not readily associate the Model T in a similar fashion to World War I, it was arguably just as durable while serving a number of similar roles. William Seabrook, an American who drove a Model T ambulance in France once wrote, “our Fords could go over shell-pitted roads and torn terrain” at 30 miles per hour. He further wrote “the ambulance driver works over, under and upon it. He paints it and oils it and knows every bolt and nut, its every whim and fancy.”
There have been countless different cars built over the years. Yet of those, how many have repeatedly demonstrated a pronounced aptitude for such a dizzying array of varied and diverse tasks? The Ford Model T, as passenger car, pickup, delivery truck, tractor, and stationary power plant at home as well as being ambulance, delivery truck, and artillery mover in war-torn Europe and Africa, was certainly a formidable mechanical soldier during the Great War.

The majority of the references I've found to the Model T as a gun carrier describe the light machine gun carrier used by the Australian forces in the desert theatres (as per Digger's kit) but this photo seems to depict a carrier kitted out for use in Europe so I'm hoping for the purposes of my vignette that some were used in France officially, or that a resourceful officer with the right connections requisitioned one for his personal use

Looks like a fun little build, but that could turn big as I have never built a full resin before.
Good luck. :th: :th: :th: :th:

Interesting build and no doubt where others got their idea of "technical s" from in recent conflicts i.e. sticking 50cal, 20/30mm, etc on pick ups

Tomcat this resin kit of yours is 1916 where as mine is 1917. The Australians did not have model T's until 1917 when the Daimler and Mercedes cars that they were first issued with died.

Oooh - well spotted; I'd missed the difference in the years :cheers2:

In that case I'll definitely be painting mine khaki-greenish and plastering it in mud :)

Tomcat's 1/35 Resicast Ford-T Gun Carrier - Build Part 1

Post by Tomcat64 »

Got some bench time in this afternoon and made a start in on this Resicast kit.

Here's the first page of the instructions
Image

And the associated parts - nothing too complicated but a little cleaning up to do
Image

Just a quick note on my approach to working with resin; rather than working directly on my bench/cutting mat I use a scruffy old tray with dampened kitchen towel sheets on top. These obviously get ripped up pretty quickly especially when sawing but do help to keep the dust trapped down.

So after cutting off the casting blocks, cleaning up and the application of some Deluxe Materials Rocket Max CA this came together pretty snugly
Image

Onto page two and the two parts for the rear suspension and drive shaft
Image

The kit also included the 0.75mm rod required for additional parts which were cut to length and fitted. The drive shaft was about 1mm short so I cut a shim from plastic rod and glued that in place to fill the gap (indicated by the arrow).
Image

So that's all so far but at least it's under way - next up will be the front suspension which looks a little fiddly.

Thanks for stopping by :cheers2:
Cheers, Neil

Tomcat's 1/35 Resicast Ford-T Gun Carrier - Build Part 2

Post by Tomcat64 »

Another quick update - I think this one is going to be small steps all the way through...

So tackling two pages worth of instructions in one go last night as they went together to setup the front suspension

Here's the first page - took me a while to track down part 49 which is just a triangular sliver of resin; and part 35 is labelled as 34 in the instructions
Image

And page two - although the kit includes a length of .75mm rod there's not enough to do everything they ask you to so I've had to get some more, and the indicated block includes all four part 44s so some tiny fiddly stuff on the horizon
Image

And after about an hour of fiddling about and swearing I had everything where it should be more or less. One place where I deviated from the instructions was with the small 5mm steering arm on page two, instead of adding parts 44 to the 5mm rod I added each one to its mounting point and then cut/sanded the rod to fit once they were in place.
Image

And just to see how it was going I flipped it over and dry fitted the wheels (not cleaned up yet)
Image

That's all for now - hopefully I'll get chance to move it along a little more this weekend.

Thanks for stopping by :cheers2:

Tomcat's 1/35 Resicast Ford-T Gun Carrier - Build Part 3

Post by Tomcat64 »

I've managed to get some more time at the bench over the evenings this week and moved this along nicely - I'm always surprised by how much time is taken up prepping Resin parts prior to sticking them to anything.

So here is the next build section to be tackled
Image

A quick note on part labelling as I got confused when I stumbled over the wrong part C to start with - the C on the upper block is actually EC and that's wrong too  more on that later
Image

The exhaust was fitted to the underside without too much hassle
Image

The rear mudguards were a little trickier as the mounting points are really small but just needed to hold them with some patience while the CA bonded
Image

Leaving the requisite gap between the mudguard and the body
Image

Finally the wheels were cleaned up - these will be glued in place later to make painting easier
Image

Next evening we flipped over the page to find a variety of parts waiting for us...
Image

The assembly in the bottom right of the page is for the horn, a couple of notes on this as Parts 52 & 23 are incorrectly labelled and I've not been able to find part 22 as yet - I'll have another look for it later but there is a suspicious mounting point on the block containing 21 & 23...
Image

The "cab" details went in without too many problems although the individual pedals were a little fiddly and in hindsight I should have drilled out locating holes for them. There is a large bubble-hole to fill on the seat block though
Image

Down the front the lamps and crank handle were added - I was a little disappointed to find there were no lenses included in the kit so I'll have to get hold of some AM lenses
Image

Some of you may have noticed that the headlights aren't quite aligned... this is because butter-fingers here pinged the left side lamp bracked in a vaguely North-Easterly direction and couldn't find it :bash: So I grabbed a bit of PE fret scrap and cut & bent it to shape using the remaining example as a template - it may need a little fettling but I think it'll work
Image

Over the page we go and it looks like the final parts for the build
Image

The two cans on the running board were tidied up and added with no problems. The gun mount was assembled off the kit and then added when completed
Image

The gun handles do merit a mention of their own as this part was covered in flash and then promptly broke in half so took a little fiddling and CA'd fingers to get it all where it should be
Image

The folded tripod was assembled and casually chucked into the back of the flatbed - oh - remember part EC from earlier? It's actually Part EA... Anyway - the legs were fitted to the equally mislabelled part B which is actually part L... I can only assume this bit was manufactured after a long Friday lunch down a suitable hostelry serving Belgian beer
Image

A quick flip over to the final pages of the instructions and we spot that there's a requirement for 8mm of rod to be added either side at the back
Image

But hang on... closer inspection reveals an additional part has also snuck in here! I looked back through the instructions and the rear lamp wasn't mentioned anywhere previously
Image

Here's the back end with the bits fitted
Image

So aside from the horn section and a little fettling and tidying up I think that's the main build done so the wheels were stuck on with blobs of blu-tac to see how it looks
Image

The gun is also dry-fitted so that can be removed for painting and there's the ammo case & belt as well as the assorted bits for the flatbed all to be added after main painting is done.

Next up will be the driver's figure and I think one from the masterbox set to see if what I have in mind will work.

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:
Cheers, Neil

Tomcat's 1/35 Resicast Ford-T Gun Carrier - Build Part 4

Post by Tomcat64 »

It's been a couple of weeks and I've been pottering along with this one

Firstly I assembled the parts for the Resicast Ford T driver and as you can see he was obviously designed for a different Ford T to the one I'm building here
Image

Not to worry - working on the assumption that this was definitely a period of bodging and improvisation I used some 0.75mm sheet cut to about 1mm to make some uprights with a 0.5mm slice for the top-rail and put this in place (I've also started in on filling some of the bubble holes)
Image

Which I think works ok - as you can see I've also repositioned the right arm as I wasn't happy with the way it was sitting on the steering wheel
Image

Whilst I was in a bodging mood I went looking for Part 22 again... no luck so I hacked off the top of a spare lamp and fashioned something for the horn assembly that will hopefully pass
Image

I've also been building up the Masterbox figures over the evenings - as usual the "instructions" are limited to the picture on the back of the box
Image

I've used Masterbox figures before and have to say this is the worst set I've come across in terms of seam lines, flash and pin marks so each figure probably took the best part of an hour to get together including clean up. There's still quite a bit of filling to be done in places but they're all together now - here are the troops blu-tacked to a GW Large oval base that I found in the spares box (weapons will be added later)
Image

And the plan is for the officer to be standing in the back of the carrier
Image

I may need to adjust the figures for the final composition but I think this will work
Image

Next up will be filling and cleaning up on all the figures before starting in with paint; there are some additional parts to be sorted out for the Vickers gun (ammo box & belt) so I need to figure out how to work those in too as the belt will need bending into shape.

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:

@JoaquinGM I just checked and actually six figures will be the lowest count for a 1/35 diorama for me :) I did one last year with thirteen but that was crazy  There's no guarantee of the quality but they'll all have paint on them :th:

Tomcat's 1/35 Resicast Ford-T Gun Carrier - Build Part 5

Post by Tomcat64 »

I've been struggling with bench & browsing time the last week or so but have still managed to get this moved along a bit.

In the cargo compartment I whipped out my trusty Sharpie and drew a rough line out for the area needed for the officer type
Image

Then glued in the various accessories on the other side of the line
Image

Finally added a cover using tissue wetted in with thin white glue to conform to the shapes underneath - thanks to @spock1701 for the original tipoff on this technique last year during the Winter build
Image

Once that'd been left to thoroughly dry out the whole thing was given a coat of Ultimate Black primer followed by Vallejo ModelAir Dark Olive Drab and a final misting of ModelAIr US Olive Drab to add a little contrast
Image

The decking was picked out in a Walnut base colour
Image

And the front grille was given a black clay wash - there's some missing detail in the resin here so I need to go back and touch that up
Image

Finally I grabbed a couple of hours on Sunday to paint up the driver - the uniform colour is a mix of Vallejo Model Colour "English Uniform" and olive drab as the Uniform colour seemed a little brown to my eye. The puttees are a mix of olive drab and green, the belt & shoes are leather brown and the flesh was Andrea's set. All washed down with a mix of black & brown to add more depth and bring it together
Image

And here he is sitting in the wagon...
Image

Next jobs are to add some grain to the wood, paint the covered cargo and start with general weathering. Will also try and get the next figure done as well.

Thanks as always for looking. :cheers2:
Cheers, Neil

For anyone interested in how the tarp things works I went looking for the video I first used as a reference, I couldn't find that but I did find this one by our own Sharpie that shows how to put tarps on your kitchen implements :ooops:

Tomcat's 1/35 Resicast Ford-T Gun Carrier - Build Part 6

Post by Tomcat64 »

Not much progress this week due to work getting in the way but here's a little of the dabbling I have done.

I wanted to try something a little different for the wooden decking so I gave it a coat of clay washes - mainly dark dirt but with patches of brown & black for variation. Instead of wiping down as usual I used a damp stippling brush to try and get some streaking effects in the planks.

In this shot the front section is done and the back section just has the washes applied without any work done to them
Image

It's not perfect woodwork but I think it'll do to give the impression of worn planking... here's the finished result.
Image

The driver's seat was painted with a base-coat of dark grey, this was then carefully dry brushed with yellow rust to give a worn leather effect and finally given a couple of coats of thin, dark wash
Image

And down the back the tarp was given a coat of Model Colour "Canvas" followed by a few coats of a similar thin, dark wash (mix of black & brown). It's still on the shiny side at the moment but should look ok when I've given it a coat of Ultra Matte
Image

That's all for this update - thanks as always for checking in.
Cheers, Neil

Tomcat's 1/35 Resicast Ford-T Gun Carrier - Build Part 7

Post by Tomcat64 »

Still struggling to get time at the bench but have made a little more progress on this one in the last week or so.

The bodywork weathering was initiated by streaking various shades of Abteilung 502 oils using odourless enamel thinners
Image

Then the underside and wheel arches were attacked with Mig pigments - mud and Europe dust stippled onto the aforementioned enamel thinners
Image

The wheels & tyres were brush painted using Vallejo olive drab for the wheels & light rubber for the tyres
Image

Initial dirtying was done with a dark dirt clay wash
Image

Before CAing them to the chassis - the wheels aren't quite even so I'll have to balance that out on the base with some surreptitious mud/rocks
Image

More pigments were added to the wheels & running boards - this still needs some finessing to tidy it up as it's a bit heavy handed at the moment
Image

And finally for this update another dude has been painted up - there's probably a few details I'll fiddle with but he's mostly done bar some restrained weathering on the boots
Image

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:

Tomcat's 1/35 Resicast Ford-T Gun Carrier - Build Part 8

Post by Tomcat64 »

Two updates in the same week - will wonders never end!

Firstly I played about with the pigments (cotton bud & water as well as a stippling brush) to even them out a bit and then when I was happy I blasted the whole thing with a coat of AK Ultra Matte
Image

Then painted up and dry-fitted the Vickers gun.
Image

And finally dry fitted the two occupants to see how it all came together - and also to check if the driver's leg will foul the ammo belt if I decide to install it. It does look a little tight so I might just install the closed ammo box in the compartment next to the driver - more fiddling to be done
Image

If I get chance this weekend I'll hopefully make a start on the base and the move the other four figures along as well.

Thanks as always for looking :cheers2:

Tomcat's 1/35 Resicast Ford-T Gun Carrier - Build Part 9

Post by Tomcat64 »

So last week was even more bonkers than expected but I did get some time at the weekends to play with this.

I decided to have a crack at the base so used a combination of coffee stirrers and balsa wood to put a walkway together - I've added the extra supports on each "plank" to try and keep it level on the base
Image

These should not be overly visible from the top once they're in place
Image

This was all assembled with white glue and then added to the base along with another "beam" to act as a dam for the textured paint to build up against
Image

Vallejo textured Earth was liberally slopped on and then the walkway was pressed into place while it was still wet
Image

Left overnight to dry and then tested to make sure I'd left enough room for the vehicle
Image

Just!
Image

Base coated with Ultimate black and then random sprays of gelb to add a little variation
Image

Randomly sprayed with various Vallejo ModelAir browns
Image

Finally some mig pigments (Mud & Europe Dust) and a coat of AK Ultra Matte and I think we're just about done aside from some final fettling once everything's in place
Image

Back on the Wagon and the gun cooler hose and oil pipe were added out of 0.2mm brass wire curved around the shaft of a paintbrush
Image

And then painted up in a couple of shades of grey - I'll add some oil streaks around the pipe to finish that off
Image

I've decided not to add the ammo belt as it will definitely tangle with the driver's legs so I'll add the ammo box and figures and that will be the vehicle done. I was toying with adding lenses to the various lights but one of the references I found said that service vehicles would most likely be de-brassed and de-glassed. So that just leaves the four figures for the base and I'm hoping to get them moving this week.

Thanks as always for looking.
Cheers, Neil

Tomcat's 1/35 Resicast Ford-T Gun Carrier - Build Part 10

Post by Tomcat64 »

Just a quick update as I've managed to get a little more time in the evenings this week.

Firstly I finished up the ammo box and installed it in the driver's compartment, added some AK engine oil around the oil pipe and mounted the figures. I did have a "clucking bell" moment when the officer fell out and broke his cane, but that's been retrieved from the carpet monster and CA'd back in place. Here it is on the base...
Image

I then turned attention to the four remaining figures in the squad - I've added some extra straps from 1mm Aizu tape where the kit mouldings left a bit to be desired and then primed them all in Ultimate black. Hopefully this weekend I'll get some paint on them and will be in with a chance of getting this finished this side of Christmas

Tomcat's 1/35 Resicast Ford-T Gun Carrier - Build Part 11

Post by Tomcat64 »

I made a start on the four characters in the squad last weekend and have pottered away at them through the week.

My plan was to show you each stage as I painted... So here they are with the uniform colour painted up. As usual my approach is to start with the darkest shadow stage and gradually lighten up through the base colour to any highlights. This was done with Vallejo Model Color English Uniform
Image

Then the leather jerkins followed the same process using Model Color leather as the base.
Image

I then picked out the flesh with Andrea's flesh set and somehow screwed things up and left them looking like some kind of bizarre orange Trump tribute act...
Image

After some appropriate swearage I then cracked on and basically forgot to take photos until this one :ooops: And apologies for the quality of the photo too... not a good day there...
Image

After some general washes and a bit of dry brushing with mud they were given a coat of Ultra Matte and installed into position on the base
Image

And aside from some final fettling that's it done - over to the final reveal here to see how it all turned out.

Thanks as always to anyone who stopped by to take a look and especially to those who offered encouragement along the way.

:cheers2:
