Les
Thanks Les it does test you at times and some of it is pretty pointless in my view as you can't/wont be able to see it once the kit is fully assembled. I have found like most things in life the more I do the easier it's becoming and hopefully the better I get.

I will be much more selective in future with what PE I buy as it's not cheap.

Here's yesterdays up date :th:
Image
Image
Starboard side fuselage panel now in place
Image
Port side fuselage panel and dry fitted bombardier area
Image
Dry fitted cockpit

Still quite a bit of fitting out to do some (instrument panels) can't be fitted until painting has taken place.

More tomorrow :th:

Today's up date :th:
It don't look like much but building and placing the throttle and other stick controls took hours
Image
Image
The one's in the bombardiers compartment where a real test :bash:
Image
As was building the forward hatch, it's got strengthening indents this proved a real problem when trying to put the radius in it as the strengthening indent did their job. Which made it impossible to get the correct radius without creases forming on the outside surface, for real this would be pressed indents/radius simultaneously, not come out too bad though :th:
Image
Image
The hinges were real trick too 180* bend back, then twist and a 90* bend back
Image
Moving in to the radio/ball turret areas now :th:

Thanks guys much appreciated :cheers2:

There really is a lot I'm almost half way I'd say, sadly much of it will either not been seen or very hard to see. I think going froward I'll be far more selective with what PE I'm going to use as it's, very time consuming and if you not going to see it what's the point plus it's expensive.......very this lot cost almost double what the kit cost

But I am enjoying it and it's really honing my skills, which is only a good thing as some of my planned builds require high levels of detail which will be seen :th:

I just hope I can get this finished within the time line of the SIG as I'm away with work for another 2 weeks end of July. Once I've got the PE all in I can then paint, that will allow the last bits of PE to got on, then I can close the fuselage and move on with the outside, wings and yet more PE

5.0 Cal empty case bins, I'm not even sure I'll fit these. I can't find wartime pictures of the Nine O nine or any late 43 B17 with them probably one of those seems like a good idea but don't work in practice.

Ooh, when I saw there was an update on Nine O Nine I thought, yeah, crackin!

That PE work looks beautiful under paint. The Bombay is a thing of beauty and I love the look of the waist positions and the radio room.

Looking at the bombardier's station it always amazes me these guys went into combat with nothing between them and the flak and the fighters save for some Perspex - or in the other positions, an aluminium skin so thin a child could push a screw driver through it.:

Beautiful work Kev - thanks for my fix today!

On another note, be on the lookout for 'The Mighty Eighth', the new TV production by the team that did Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Its in pre production at the moment so I think it will be a while before we see it but IT IS coming. :pop:

Thank mate, I rushed things a little so the paint is a little silk rather than matt but I've got a fair bit still to do and a quick blow over with some matt clear will sort that. There's just so much to do with the interior PE it's so time consuming  and unlike armour, bikes, cars etc it's all stop start with the airbrush, this being my first plane in over 30yrs I've got to learn the tricks :  but I'm really enjoying it :th:

I'm planning another a good few hours at the bench this weekend and over the next week, hopefully I'll bring this one in on time ;) :th:

Updates to last nights work :th:
The areas just below the top turret are where the oxygen racks where the AF cylinders I have don't fit there's not enough room top to bottom and they were to close for the double rack. The cylinders come with their own mounts so these marks won't bee seen.
Image
Image
Last bit's of PE for the waist gunners positions is now on, ammo boxes, link tracks to fit, guns and windows to fit now.
Image
Image
Chair removed fitted my mistake as the radio position has it's own PE, bracket for small shelf above radio ops position refitted, it fell off. One very small PE part from right hand side top is currently with the carpet monster :pistols: thus far the only bit it's had, hopefully I'll find it!
Image
Cockpit is now complete, the seat linings were too long and had to be cut down.
Image
Image
Image
Chin mount remote PE fitted and last PE for the bomb sight.
Image
Image
Working on the ball and top turrets as I type, hopefully finishing them today or tomorrow with the fuselage closed up :th:

Monday and today's up date.

I'm almost at the point of closing her up, it's now apparent most of the internal PE will not be visible at all :wtf: I knew quite a bit wouldn't be but it's worse than I'd thought made worse by the very poor quality clear plastic, even after a dip in Gunzy! Oh well it's been a good learning exercise and one which most certainly help me with my future planned builds, so not a waste, but not worth the expense certainly not in this scale.

This is also my first go at wood grain and I've still got to finish the the ammo box.
Image
and I got the PE back from the carpet monster :th:
Image
Image
Image
The PE kit contains ammo track and link for the nose, upper midships and wist guns, but these are extremely fragile and will be almost impossible to see. I'm yet to make up my mind as to whether I fit them.

Yes mate with oils, took a bit of trial and error to select the right brush, colour and ratio of the oil/thinner.

This weekends update.

Time is really not on my side now, I think it's fair to say I'm not going to make it and I'm going to have to fall out of formation skipper

I will keep building and updating until it's finished.
I've now started on the wings :th: these have proved to be a real pain :pistols: :wall: mostly fit and moulding issues Revell is living up to what I remember all though years ago and why I avoided them :pistols: :pistols: The PE isn't helping either

You are going to have so much photo etch in there you won't need nose weight!

Shame it's a tail sitter :th:

But joking aside, I wouldn't recommend these BigEd kits on 1/72 aircraft. Or any of the internal PE not unless you have an intention of using vision panels. I'd say 90% of the internal PE on this build wont be seen, add that to the very poor Revell clear plastic on this kit and that goes up about 95% and this stuff isn't cheap

I wouldn't really recommend this kit either some of the moulding and fit is very poor. As I said earlier, I now remember why as a kid I avoided Revell, no wonder they're struggling, there's just so much out there that's better and better by a long way for not a lot more.

It seems to me revel is a company that mostly rides on the coat tails of others. So I guess eventually the standards will rise.

Last couple days bench time, she's now ready to close up :th:
Image
Here some of the external fit issues not as bad as some but should be better in my opinion. I also had to remove the side nose guns as they are too big and at the wrong angles, they should be pointing forward but are at right angles to their mountings, they are so not to scale the front one goes right over the bombardiers seat :wtf:
Image
The worst fit area was the upper fuselage.
Image
The door and inner bulkhead are out of alignment, this I should really have picked up on and is showing my lack of aircraft modelling experience  That said there must be scale issues with the kit to get outside/inside features wrong I'd have though.
Image
Wings and fuselage are now assembled :th: The wings were just as bad fit around the engine nacelles. The port side waist gunners position window fell in :wtf:  not sure what i can do about that as there's no way to refit it without access from the rear of it. There's no way to mount the gun without the window either, looks like there was but the parts for this aren't in the kit  little bit of scratch building looming :th:

More stunning work on all that PE Kev - and great perseverance in knocking Revell's sloppiness into shape.

Hope you get that waist window & gun position sorted somehow too.

Really looking forward to seeing this under paint now.
Cheers, Neil

Some I'm sure is down to my lack of experience with aircraft but it's really not the best. Just a shame I'm not going to make the bomber build deadline work just hammered me :wall: :wall: but I will get it finished. :th:
