Bomber GB/SIG 1/72 Fairey Battle VC Icon Airfix.

Post by Novasquad23 »

This is an ancient Airfix kit that has been repackaged by them in a four aircraft set called VC Icons. Each of the aircraft presented in this kit have the markings of aircraft where crew members were awarded the Victoria Cross for valour. Due to the lateness of my entering the bomber build, I'm choosing the Fairey Battle as it:
A) is smaller than a medium or heavy bomber, hence less sanding and filling,
B) contains no complex sub-assemblies, I'll jazz up the cockpit with a few scratch built details but that's about it,
C) the paint scheme is bog standard RAF black, earth brown and dark green ( no metallic parts to fiddle about with) that I can brush paint (I'm still working up to the airbrush).
Which mean I can build it in the remaining time available.
It's also going to be an OOB build. Other than a couple of cockpit details, its going to be just as Airfix intended.

I'm building this kit mainly to participate in the bomber build. The Fairey Battle isn't likely to be a popular subject as it was a disaster in combat. It lacks the glamour factor of more highly esteemed bombers like the Lancaster or B-17. But it does have bomb bay doors, albeit in the wings, and thus qualifies for the GB. My first choice was the Yak-6 primarily because they were built in furniture factories (what other bomber can claim that) but unfortunately it carried its minuscule weapons load (5 x 50kg) on external racks.

The Fairey Battle was a single engined monoplane designed as a replacement for the Hawker Hind/Hart light bombers in RAF service. At the time of its introduction to the RAF it was faster than the existing biplane fighters that were then still common. The Battle could carry 1000lb of bombs in internal bomb bays located in the inner wing, with an additional 500lbs able to be carried on external racks under the mid wings. It's defensive armament consisted of a Vickers .303 machine gun in the starboard wing and a Vickers K .303 machine gun with a flexible mount covering the rear of the aircraft.

The Battle was already obsolete by the time hostilities broke out in September 1939. Compared to the newly introduced monoplane fighters it was facing (Me-109E) it was distinctly underpowered, lacked any armour plate or self sealing fuel tanks and had a woeful defensive armament. The lack of armour left the aircraft vulnerable to flak.

The Battle was a mainstay of Bomber Command during 1939 and 1940. During the Phoney War period before the invasion of the Low Countries and France in May 1940, Fairey Battles participated in leaflet raids over cities in the Ruhr from bases in France. Once the German invasion began, so did the slaughter of Battle crews. They were used in vain attempts to halt oncoming columns of the Wehrmacht and were consistently downed by German fighters and flak. The Battle was withdrawn from France and tasked with bombing the invasion fleet that was concentrating to invade Britain after the fall of France in June 1940.

The Battle was then relegated to secondary, non combat duties such as a trainer and target tug. Many Commonwealth pilots and bombardiers were trained using the Battle. Some aircraft remained in service in these roles until the 1950's

Photos of the box art, sprues etc will be posted tomorrow along with a build update. I left the Yak-6 to one side and worked on the Battle and the Yak-7/9 this weekend.

Anyway, enough waffle.

I look forward to seeing how you get on. I built this kit before but didn't get as far as painting it before it got destroyed in a house move!

Apologies for the lack of updates. I've lost a week of building time due to reaching the top of the surgery waiting list for my legs. Anyway here are the sprue shots I meant to post last Monday [when I was in reality travelling to Melbourne]. I need to get cracking.

Wings and tail planes attached, filler added (surprisingly little for a kit of this vintage). Now there's the sanding, plenty of sanding (some sizeable mis-alignment issues), but the plastic is fairly soft so it should go smoothly.

Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Thanks people. There's about 10 days to go and I hit a major snag. The bomb bay doors and bombs were an atrocious fit. I almost called it quits last night as a result. The rest of this ancient kit went together without too many hassles, just continuous mis-alignments along ALL the seams. Nothing a weeks worth of sanding hasn't fixed. But no, im not quitting, i simply had to get savage with the sanding to get the doors and bombs sitting somewhat correctly (and I'm not 100% happy with the results). But she is now primed and ready for painting. The amount of filler isn't as much as the photo "shows" given the masking tape trick. I was actually surprised at how few gaps there were that needed it. The iPad takes better pix during the day so there should be a photo or two tomorrow. I've really enjoyed this no-frills build though funnily enough and the deadline has been a major motivator. I look forward to seeing other people's builds that will put my meagre efforts to shame.

What Alex said!

That's a phenomenal amount of work in a short space of time - looking forward to seeing it all in paint.

Apologies for the lack of updates, I've been unwell. This is how the Battle is at the moment. I've gone for wheels-up as the simplest option mainly because it lacked the locating points to make it work, and the deadline is looming. There is a major "disaster" with the centre canopy, Airfix in its wisdom has placed two ejector pin marks on the inside centreline of it. :pistols: :pistols: :pistols: I'll just have to paint it up as is. Such is my humble effort for this build.
Thanks for your kind comments guys. :cheers2: I'll do better next time.

Well, the Battle is as finished as its going to be. That dastardly carpet monster ate the Vickers K machine gun and then decided on eating one of the wing landing light transparencies. I wasn't a happy camper at that point. :pistols: Losing the wing transparency has basically wrecked the build. That said, I decalled the thing and took some bad photos (pain = shakes). I'll retake the pix tomorrow (pain levels permitting) for the show and tell.

Congrats to all who managed to complete their builds. The standard of modelling I've seen in this SIG have been outstanding, seriously. I'm glad I'm not having to judge the best as it seems an impossible task. :cheers2:

I've enjoyed participating in the build and am definitely in for the Great War build. I'll be starting early this time. Doing an old Airfix kit for the bomber SIG reminded me of my appreciation for kits that are not burdened with complex sub-assemblies. I'm really happiest with a decent cockpit and wheel wells. Engines, gun bays, service panels etc just bog me down.

As for the build of the Battle, I rued not having dry-fitted the bombs until the last minute, ditto the transparencies. The major boo-boo was not checking the transparencies when i began the build as they were sealed in their own bag. i figured if i didnt open the bag i could lose them (how well did that ONE work out. I also under-estimated the lack of locating points within the undercarriage. I painted it by hand and I really need to get on top of using an airbrush as well.

Well here's to the WWI build.

You did extremely well for such a short period
Start your WWI build early and you will be laughing
Thanks for participating, try and finish off if the parts turn up :thumb2:
