EGGDoubleU-190

Post by DJGDownunder »

So, I've decided to throw my hat in the ring, even though I tend to take forever to finish my builds due to "Life" issues, and the inevitable "Squirrel Syndrome" which sees me with six builds currently on the go at the moment.
I did actually finish a Toon Panzer III last week, so I reckon I'm a fair chance of completing.
My effort will be the Hasegawa Focke-Wulf Fw190A Egg Plane, which is apparently the 11th one they released, or the "TH11" if you read it off the box.
I have never entered a SIG or group build before, so I'll apologise in advance if I screw up, no doubt I'll be informed fairly promptly if I go off the rails. I have read the rules and it all seems pretty straight forward.

Image

There's 2 sprues, plus the canopy sprue and two decal options. At this point I'm thinking of going OOB... but I guess we'll see how that pans out.

Image

Here's a close up of the main bit - it looks like I'm in for a bit of seam work..... but then us Aussies are developing a bit of a reputation for being good with sandpaper, so that shouldn't be an issue...... (Apologies for the Cricket reference, to all the non-sport watching types). :)

My favourite ww2 aircraft, will it be out the box or will you tamper with it?

So I guess the answer to Pourquoi61's question is, "I'll probably tamper with it", but only a little bit.
First job on the bench, was to try and correct some of the shortfalls, (not that we would expect these cheap little kits to be perfect).

Kit has raised panel lines... yuk, and a solid rudder moulded to one half of the fuselage, which resulted in a couple of really obvious sink marks on both sides of the rudder. And given the joint with the rudder you effectively end up with a raised panel line on one side and a recessed one on the other side.
So I've addressed this a bit. (I'm still a bit of a learner with the engraving tool, but practice makes perfect... hopefully).

Image

Next trick was the "out of round" engine intake, raised panel line around the cowl and the ugly, un-flat front face of the cowl.

Image

Next, engrave the panel lines on the wings and tailplanes, and then onto the cockpit..... its more of a seat really. Perhaps we'll call it a "blank canvas" instead.

A little more progress.
Engraved panel lines on one wing.
And I had to do something with the MG nubs in the wings...... they weren't cartoony/eggie enough.

Now for the other one......

A little more progress.
Finished upgrading all the MGs, then, owing to the cockpit being a little sparse, I made up some Cartoonishly oversized seatbelts, to hopefully fit in with the general eggplane theme.

I'll button up the fuselage with the canopy next and move towards gluing on all the appendages that will "technically" make it an aeroplane.

I slapped the flying surfaces on, and whilst I didn't feel the need to do too much in the way of wing root work, the starboard side wing-root was considerable longer than the port one, which fitted perfectly.

Image

So I got into it with a file and some sanding sticks

Image

Not perfect, but close enough for an eggplane......
Now time for some primer.

Hello all,
A little more progress, - with the canopy glued on, it was time to colour the internal frame with German Grey.

Image

Primer time, and given that I had a white nose band followed by a yellow cowl and rudder, I went for a white primer.
This was my first time using Ultimate primer, and I have to say that I am very impressed with how easy it was to spray, and how well it went down.

Image

I know that I really only needed to mask the white nose band before painting all the yellow, but it may make the rest of the painting a little easier.

Image

I'm very happy with how even the yellow went down too. Another first for me, I used some recently acquired Tamiya X-20A thinner with their XF-3 Yellow. I had previously used water to thin Tamiya paints, and the results were mostly alright for gloss and semi-gloss paints, but not so good with flats. I'll chalk that one up to experience.

Image

That's all for now, next up will be the RLM 76 light blue for the lower surfaces.

Very nice.

Given the shape of the real thing I can hardly tell the difference here! :th:
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Yeah, these little things are great little Mojo boosters.
I’ve just ordered a Meng Scharnhorst egg ship kit...... it’ll be too late for this SIG, but I have my hands full with the Fockegg already anyway.

Hello fellow eggers,
Lower surfaces airbrushed with Tamiya XF-23 Light Blue. (RLM76)

Image

I then sprayed the upper surfaces with Tamiya XF-54 Dark Sea Grey (RLM75 Grey Violet)... unfortunately I seem to have forgotten to take a photo of that.
Lastly the darker camo is Tamiya XF-50 Field Blue (RLM Grey Green).

Image

After the "always a pleasure" unmasking, we have the result below.

Image

I have a few little touch-ups to do, due to my less than perfect masking effort, and then it will be time for some clear gloss.

just a quick update.

I got some Alclad Aqua Gloss on it and have now completed the decals. (I managed to incorporate a few errors with the markings, but nothing i shouldn't be able to work around).

Getting close now, just some detail painting, weathering, undercarriage and stores.
