I don't think I knew anything about this until I saw your post, but then checking it out it seems they're going to distribute it internationally via Netflix so I may have seen it and dismissed it; like Lysus I don't feel like paying for yet another subscription service so I'll be waiting for it to appear on one of the services I'm already overpaying for or when it pops up on a disk of some sort.

Are you running windows XP. I have a machine near my bench that has only xp on it and I cant see any vids in this ISM website, but they play fine on my widows 7 machine upstairs. If you go to youtube directly it plays ok too with xp tho. I think most peeps here use windows 7 and up and Apple computers. I dont think phpBB (this Forum Software) made this website work on any old machines. Im surprised I can use XP at all to this day, but hey... my bucks go to kits and stuff now. I cant afford crap now.
Does this one work?

I'm running Windows 10 Tony and the second video runs fine
The first one comes up with "This video is not available" when I click play either in the embedded version or on YouTube.
Tis a mystery.

Re: Tomcat's Five Year Mission - USS Enterprise
So I've had a decent afternoon on the mission but it is bouncing from section to section a little... can't imagine why that would be...

Actually I'm still waiting on my replacement clear orange turning up for the Bussard collectors so it's not entirely down to the chief engineer, but I did want to move along with the build given I had a free afternoon to myself.
We start off by recovering a bit of ground that I experimented with when the LEDs first turned up - but hopefully this time with a little more logic involved

We're heading back to the saucer section - also called the primary hull...from memory alpha:
The primary hull, also known as the main section, saucer section or saucer module on some classes, was a major component of the overall hull structure of most Federation starships. The primary hull was generally located above and to the front of the secondary hull. On many Federation starships, including the Constitution-, Excelsior-, Miranda-, Nebula-, Akira-, Ambassador- and Galaxy-classes, the primary hull was usually referred to as the saucer section, because it had a roughly circular shape while the Intrepid-class starship has a diamond shaped primary hull saucer section and a Sovereign- class starship has an oval shaped primary hull saucer section, the Defiant-, Nova- and Prometheus- class starships had a triangle or a U-shaped primary hull saucer section and the Daedalus- and Olympic- class starships had a sphere shaped primary hull.
The primary hull typically contained most vital systems on board a starship, including the main bridge, computer core, captain's ready room, conference room, sickbay, science labs, Captain's quarters, crew quarters, transporter room, ten forward, mess hall, holodeck, corridor and other crew support systems. It does not generally house the warp drive or any major engineering systems, although in many cases it does contain its own impulse drive.
Ships capable of saucer separation were designed for this purpose in order to have the primary hull serve as a lifeboat for the crew in the event of catastrophic damage to the warp core or a loss of antimatter containment. It is for this reason the majority of crew comforts are nestled into the primary hull.
First up I noticed that although there is very little in the way of windows on the upper hull there are four large openings as well as the nav lights and bridge section

Fortunately these were lined up with window clusters within the lower surface so as long as I was careful in placing the LEDs the same light source should be able to light up the clusters as well as the larger opening on the upper surface

Pulling out my trusty Sharpie I then numbered where I planned to put an LED, this wasn't actually intended to necessarily be in order but as it turned out that sequence worked pretty well and this shot will help me when I've blacked out the interior!

Counting out the 14 LEDs I then threaded the string through the opening for the pylon from the engineering hull and taped them in place using masking tape. I'm planning on using insulating tape with a little CA when I come to do this for real unless anyone has any better suggestions?

Up on top the last LED on the string was poked up through and taped into the bridge section

Everything was dry fitted and a switch was thrown...

Looks good up top

Underneath

And around the edges

Ok with that done it was off to the paint shop for a layer of Ultimate black on the inside and then we'll run the same test again to see if it'll be ok with just the black or whether I'll need to add a white layer inside as well.
So... where to next...

How about the pylons...
A nacelle pylon was part of a starship or shuttlecraft's structure that supported the warp nacelles.
The nacelle pylon could be mounted on the primary or secondary hull, and housed the power transfer conduits, and turbolift shafts and/or jefferies tubes so the crew could gain access to the nacelle. The pylons' exterior could be mounted with various features such as emergency flush intakes and vents, sensor arrays, phaser arrays, deflector grids, transporter emitter, impulse engines and exterior pennants
Just the three parts here

There's a nice inviting gap at the top to take the wires from the LEDs

But nothing equivalent down the bottom end

So that was rectified with a pin vice and a drill bit of an appropriate size

And with a little tape to hold everything together we can see that the pylons section will work with the wiring running through - I don't need to worry about lighting in the pylons as the few windows in here are blacked out

With that done let's take a look at the base

The obvious issue here again is the lack of gaps in the base for the wiring so out with the pin vice to fix that - I've not decided where to exit the wiring from the side of the base as yet as the battery boxes are too bulky to fit underneath...

And once again with the base pylon assembled it's obvious that we'll need a wiring hole at the top end too

So there we go... everything's dry fitted at the moment so I'll tidy this up if necessary once it's been cemented together

Finally for this update we'll take a quick look at the secondary or engineering hull
On many Federation starships, the secondary hull (also known as the engineering hull, the engineering section, the stardrive section, or the battle section) is a major component of the overall hull structure. The secondary hull is generally located behind and below the primary hull.
The secondary hull is usually dedicated to engineering and support functions, especially in starships built after the mid-23rd century. It is the home of the warp drive, Main Engineering, and other engineering support systems. Separating these potentially dangerous systems from the majority of the crew, located in the primary hull, allows the secondary hull to be abandoned in the event of catastrophic damage to the warp core or a loss of antimatter containment.
The warp nacelles also make a direct connection to the secondary hull. Other areas typically found in the secondary hull include the shuttlebay, cargo bays, Crew quarters, corridor, transporter room and brig. The main deflector dish is usually located at the very front of the secondary hull, as are torpedo launchers.

First up I glued the interior bulkheads in place (yup actually glued something!)

Paired up the two halves of the hull and created the wiring run out of the bottom to match the one on the base

Then because I had several sub-sections all loitering on the bench I threw a quick dry assembly together to see how things were going

And that's all for this log entry

Next time around I'll take a look at the lighting plan for the engineering hull and hopefully be able to make more progress with the nacelles too.
Thanks for stopping by - live long and prosper!

Ive actually put my AMT Enterprise on the shelf. Your Revell model is built for LEDs. Anyone want a 20 year old AMT/ERTL - #6676 - 1:650 starship for a good price? Wow, its staring to look really nice Neil.

Actually it almost feels like they started out thinking they'd make it compatible for lighting and then changed their minds towards the end... hence the reason that some sections have cable runs but others don't (and in the case of the pylons they have the runs all the way down but no escape at the bottom.
In that case I think you better make sure your insurance is all paid up!

Re: Tomcat's Five Year Mission - USS Enterprise
But we've only just started - I've got five years of this yet!
However there has been some more progress... and as it turns out this will be my 1,000 post so I've decided to commemorate this momentous event with a special entry for the Captain's log - and here it is

Don't say I don't spoil you...
Incoming message from Amazon, Captain - the paint you ordered has arrived

Once the Tamiya transparent orange had been beamed aboard I sprayed the two clear parts for the Bussard collectors (the outer shell red, the inner one orange). This sprayed straight from the pot with no thinning

And then dry assembled the end of the nacelle with the LED installed - as you can see I'd already blasted the insides with Ultimate black primer to block any scatter or bleed

Closed it up and flicked the switch...

We are warp enabled! This is actually flickering but you'll have to take my word for that. The LED is a little on the bright side if viewed head on so I may try and do something to make that area a little more opaque if I can

I also had a go at wiring up the secondary hull in the same fashion as I had with the saucer section... it's... a bit of a mess...

But it looks like it's going to work - I do need to rearrange some of the LEDs to balance things out a bit but we have light

That's all for this update - thanks for stopping by... not sure what's going to happen next!
Cheers, Neil

Re: Tomcat's Five Year Mission - USS Enterprise
More steady progress on the mission and we find ourselves orbiting the planet "Weekend"

First up some more work on the primary hull - coated the whole thing in Ultimate black primer

Then applied Vallejo White-grey model air to the outside shell... this will be the primary colour for the finished ship

On the off-chance the lighting would work ok with the black interior I wired it all up again, but the scatter kill was too effective and the lighting was a little on the dull side

So I applied a liberal coating of Metal Color aluminium on the inside surfaces

and lit it all up again - much happier with this - I also dry fitted some of the clear pieces to see if they'd work without any sort of transparent white coating... still undecided.

Then back to the warp engines

I'm working on both nacelles in parallel, and first up I sealed up the tubes with some TET - there is some seam work to sort out but not too bad

And also time to break out the only AM parts I'm using for this build - the intercoolers, the kit part is above and the replacement part below. The replacement is much slimmer and has more detail - interestingly the replacement is listed as 1/650 instead of 1/600 but it's virtually the same length and the only adjustment required is to open up the locating holes slightly

Leaving aside the clear parts there is a relatively low part count, so I spent some time working on the smaller parts most of which make up furniture on the nacelles

These parts go onto the saucer section to make up the impulse drive - some tidying still required here

Then onto the nacelle parts - the radiator-looking things - painted with Tamiya metallic grey

The intercoolers with White-grey edges and pale blue-grey for the textured area

The aft nacelle caps, Tamiya metallic grey and white - looks like there's a couple of nicks on the white that'll need tidying up

And finally the towel rails (can't imagine what else they're for) in pale blue-grey

That's all for this update - next up more work in getting the nacelles in shape

Happy weekend folks!

Starting to look like a wessel. Lighting certainly looks to be a lot of trial and error.

Da! Fortunately we are using batteries on this one and not relying on noowclwaer energy!
The trial and error on the lighting is purely down to my pig-headedness in trying it out at every stage as it's my first attempt - if I'd followed the advice from Scott and Pourquoi I'd have gone straight to a reflective interior.

Wessel...
we would always yell that at people who couldn't parallel park or were in the way driving
"Park the freaking wessel already lady". "Mooove your wessel"
My kids swear like sailers btw
I had to do reflective inside AND black primer outside to block my LED light bleed through....actually it was mostly at the joint seams of the two sides where I couldn't get the BMF to overlap fully

Yeah - I'm a little concerned about the seams around the secondary hull in the same way. The saucer section should be ok as that closes up pretty tightly with some overlapping plastic.Twokidsnosleep wrote: ↑Thu Aug 10, 2017 8:26 pm I had to do reflective inside AND black primer outside to block my LED light bleed through....actually it was mostly at the joint seams of the two sides where I couldn't get the BMF to overlap fully

Re: Tomcat's Five Year Mission - USS Enterprise
I didn't get as much time working on this mission as I was hoping for last week, so just a quick update

First up everything was given a liberal coating of Ultimate black primer - at this stage I've redirected the wiring for the warp nacelles down the length of the tubes to try and keep them out of the way.

The inside surfaces of the secondary hull were painted in Air Colour Aluminium (same as the saucer section) and then the outer surfaces were given a couple of coats of modelair white-grey, before a layer of Alclad Aqua Gloss

And then a four hour decal session on Sunday resulted in this - the decals on the last kit I built were as thick and unworkable as anything I've encountered to date, and I'm happy to say these were a complete contrast and a pleasure to work with

Work is continuing on the warp nacelles but they're not as advanced as I would have liked, but hopefully they'll be ready for the next update

Thanks for looking!

Looking good mate, looks better than the studio prop
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Re: Tomcat's Five Year Mission - USS Enterprise
Well first report for this log entry is the seemingly obligatory set-back for this year's sci-fi SiG. It's not on the scale of TET-gate but something went bump in the night

One of the warp nacelles took a tumble off the bench and split down the seams; not a huge problem, just frustrating. But it also took this with it and battered it across something which chipped the surface and decals...

So there's some recovery work needed there - think I'll just try and sort it with a paint brush... we'll see...
Anyway - after much howling and colourful Klingon swearing I set about tidying up the busted nacelle and painted up the required details using Vallejo white and pale blue-grey

Glossed it up and threw some decals at them too...

And then added some of the furniture - I've left the metallic-painted parts off until after the matt coat goes down

So the nacelles now need a gloss coat or two prior to doing the panel lines and then a final matt coat - so that's all from engineering this week.

But back up in the saucer section the gloss coat was applied and a grey clay wash added - always nervous at this point...

And after the wash was removed - it's a little uneven so I'll need to rework some areas, and it's also a little darker than I was expecting so need to figure out how to lighten it. That being said these washes tend to lighten up a little with an application of a varnish coat so I think I'll do some experimenting on some offcuts of plastic.

That's it for this update - I've got a couple of days to myself this weekend so hopefully will keep things moving along in more or less the right direction.

Re: Tomcat's Five Year Mission - USS Enterprise
Aye Aye Kepten - all ahead full!

So to continue the theme of this build of bouncing around from section to section I started off this weekend by sorting out the base - there's method to this madness as I'll have to thread the LED string through here prior to installing into the secondary hull. I've expanded the hole to take the various wires, primed with Ultimate black and then after some masking I used a Tamiya rattle can Gold left over from last year's dalek build

I did some more mucking about with the panel lines on the primary hull but they're still too dark for my liking...

... so more thinking required on this one

Ok onto the secondary hull... some wise guy in product development decided we needed to cram 90g (just over 3oz) in here

Using wheel weights would be far too bulky, so while I was out and about I popped into my local tackle shop and picked up this...

It's 100g (3.5oz) and just about fits behind the nacelle pylons without interfering too much with the windows and luckily most of the windows in this area are blacked out.
So... the outside of the hull sections were lined using the same grey-wash as I'm using on the saucer section but I'm happier with the weight of the lines for these panels (and on the nacelles - more of that later) and then coated in AK Interactive Ultra Matter

And then the windows were added to the inside - popped into place and then secured using copious amounts of Humbrol clear fix applied with a cocktail stick

Precision engineering at it's finest - the only tricky part was one clear section which needed to be fitted behind one of the bulkheads - luckily there was just enough room to squeeze it in.
So - onto the nacelles Mr Scott

As with the secondary hull the panel lines were grey-washed and then a coat of ultra-matte was added

The rest of the furniture was added, the metallic sections painted with Tamiya metallic-grey and the outer shells for the Bussard collectors added (again using clear fix)

And then because it's been weeks since I lit anything up...

There's a little bit of tidying to do but that's the nacelles just about finished
So hopefully this week I can get the pylons sorted and then light up the secondary hull - there's going to be a challenge there in sorting the seams out but definitely starting to come together now

Thanks for looking!
Cheers, Neil
