1/35 Tiger I Early Production

Post by aur0ra145 »

Howdy all!

I'm late to start this GB; but, I think I'll be able to finish. I'm going to be building the 1/35 Tamiya Tiger I Early Production. I'm going with the Ost front version and sporting a beautiful winter camo. This is the third tracked vehicle I will have attempted and I'm excited to get started. As for aftermarket; I did purchase an Aber metal barrel and Tamiya PE grills for the model.

I'm listening to Tigers in the Mud: The Combat Career of German Panzer Commander by Otto Carius. It's an excellent audio book about eastern front Tigers and how they were employed. While it's not a tactical book it does give you a very good idea of how positional warfare worked on the ost front.

I haven't decided if I'm going to go with MIchael Wittman's S04 yet or not. I'm leaning towards it; however, I don't know how to tackle the barrel stripes.

I have gotten some work done on this model, I was just late on getting the thread up. Here's how the progress is going so far. pretty steady. Hopefully I can get to priming and paint next week.

Image

Emily is my gf and likes when I send her update pics of my builds. Then she usually draws a picture of the subject and I get to display them together. Yes, I'm already planning to put a ring on it.

Top gets put on

Image

PE grills on; had to cut them a bit because I put on the hinges before applying grills. Also, I screwed up where the hand holds on the engine deck go. I may try to scratch build those.

Image

Barrel and turret on.

Image

Smoke launchers assembled; these were a pain to get together.

Image

Smoke launcher applied to turret; notice how the launcher is canted incorrectly. I didn't catch it till much later. I think I'm going to try my hand at light battle damage.

Image

Muzzlebreak applied and the tiny bit of PE was placed in there with the help of the wonderful Ultimate placer pencil.

Image

Mostly together; need side skirts and tools.

More to come later! :thumb2:

Looking good mate.

Wow that metal barrel and muzzle break looks beautiful. Its amazing how much they add to the kit (which is going really well, by the way) :th:
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Thanks Stokesy44, I'm having fun with this one! I don't think I can ever make another tank model without getting an aftermarket barrel. It's just soooo nice.

Anywho, got the priming and base coat finished. These tanks originally were produced in the factory in field gray; but, around 1943 they started coming from the factory in Dunkelgelb RAL7028 (dark yellow.) So that's exactly what I've done. Once this dries I'm going to apply chipping with the red primer color that the factory used, RAL8012.

From what I've read, the field units themselves were given buckets of pigment that were then applied by maintenance personnel in the field for camoflauge. So, you got a lot of weird patterns and nothing was a standard. As this is a winter camo GB; I'm going to use a white or very very light gray color over the Dunkelgelb. I'm going to go with the venerable "hair spry" method for this.

Setup getting ready for primer. I think it took longer to put all those roadwheels on sticks than the actual spraying took.

Image

The stuff was primed in Ultimate Black. Great stuff; looks good, goes on well.

Image

The overall Dunkelgelb was painted with Vallejo Model Air 71.025 RAL7028 Dunkelgelb Dark Yellow. That's a mouth full; but, that's what it says on the bottle.

Got a bit more finished. Did the tools and chipped a bit. Now I'm waiting for everything to dry for a bit; then onto hairspray!

Got a bit done during the live show tonight! Actually got all the tracks and bits attached to the turret without losing any pieces or cursing aloud; truly my most impressive modelling feat thus far. Also got all the tools and such attached. Waiting for it all to dry then hairspray.

Looking really good Mick. Are those spare track links and clasps from the Tamiya kit? The detail looks beautiful and I don't remember them from when I built this kit (years ago, mind you).

White washed. Used XF-2 Flat White.

Some chipping done. I can't decided if I'm going to respray and chip a second time OR, apply filters.

Image

Anyhow; it's a good progress, I'm quite excited to keep working on this over the weekend.

Howdy all!

This is only my third armor model and I'm enjoying the heck out of it. I'm afraid of how much my stash will expand if I start building a lot of armor.

Between my last post and this one, my turret had gotten stuck from I guess the hairspray. So forcing it to turn I snapped off right headlight for my model. Sucked. However, Just like the smoke launcher things; chalk it up to battle damage and keep it rolling. Behold, I found the headlight, downstairs, in another room. Miracles do happen! I guess it got lodged in my boot or something.

So here I got the wheels put on and painted. A 1/8" Deerfoot paintbrush is probably the best utensil imaginable for painting road wheels. I'm seriously impress with how easy it was. I got the tracks on. They're painted with a mix of Tamiya Nato Brown/Nato Black/Flat Red (50/40/10) and then dry brushed with Vallejo Metal Air Steel. I also super glued the tracks to the top of the road wheels to give the realistic sag you see in photos of Tiger I's.

I got some aquagloss on it tonight; so I'm just waiting for it to dry. Then we'll get the decals on!

Well, the Aquagloss finally dried and it's time for decals!

It started off pretty well. Got the hull thing on (forgot to wash away white where it went); but alas! It looks okay, if not believable at all.

Then it happened! I've always heard of people complaining about Tamiya decals; but, up until now I had never experienced any problems. Well, the first balkenkreuz I tried to put on basically disintegrated. Thankfully, I had like 6 others to try my luck with.

The turret decals went on alright; no huge issues, however I was much more careful with them. The barrel decals was.... interesting. It's mostly straight and mostly intact. But, it doesn't quite line up perfectly on the bottom. However, it doesn't look like it'll be that big of an issue. Weathering, etc., etc. should take care of most of it.

Coming along really well!

Always love it when someone manages to retrieve something back from the carpet monster - but downstairs in another room?!?! That's really impressive!

I know how you feel with the self-folding destruction decals - I think we've all been there at some stage.
Cheers, Neil

ALARM! ACHTUNG EIN (not quite sealed gloss coat)!

Well, I started to test some washes on the side of the tank. Then, EMERGENCY! The white coat started to come off. Evidently I didn't seal it well enough with the Aqua Gloss. Going to let it sit till tomorrow and recoat the bejesus out of it with some more Aqua Gloss. Not much damage was done, I caught it very quickly.

Also figured out that I need to add a few filters to soften the contrast between the Dunkelgelb undercoat and White wash. So, I guess a really light buff/white coat probably thinned to something like 95/5 thinner to paint. Maybe two coats of that? Then reapply the Aqua Gloss?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like you're on the right track with the filters. Don't forget to apply the filter over the kill stripes on the barrel too. It will dull them down just enough to make them look organic and aged.

Strange that the white started to flake off, aqua gloss on Tamiya acrylic is usually bullet proof. Maybe the hairspray technique did something, I don't know.

It looks pucker mate. :th:

Started adding some filters. Started with a very thinned XF-2, then a MM White Grey. I'll think about a medium gray next.

Got the filters on. Sprayed the following, everything was 5:95 mix of paint to thinner. All of it was sprayed with a Patriot 105 @ 25 psi.

In order:
XF-2 Flat White
Vallejo 70.951 White Grey
XF-53 Neutral Grey
XF-85 Rubber Black

Next will be Aqua gloss for it all. Oh and I remembered to paint the hull machine gun and retouched the tracks with Vallejo Metal Air Steel as they were faded pretty bad.

Took a few extra shots to show overall progress.

Got a Vallejo Light Grey wash on, then used Mig pigments for some streaking and such. MM Stains for rust stuff. Then Tamiya eyeliner past stuff for some snow. Followed by the Vallejo Enviroment Snow for the tracks and some crevices. I think that's all I used. I was very scatter brained when applying all the weathering stuff. I also used Testors Dullcote for the whole thing (minus the Vallejo Snow).

Reveal thread is up here viewtopic.php?f=583&t=21968

Thanks everyone for the nice words and suggestions! Couldn't have done it without ya'll!
