Need help with pin washing panels lines

Post by jmatt »

Perhaps you guys can help me as I attempt to pin wash panel lines. This is only my second build and I'm worried I'm doing something wrong here.

First, I watched dozens of videos about washes and pin washes. Then I laid down three good coats of future, multiple thin coats in all three applications.

When I went to pin wash with a thin oil wash and Turpenoid, it didn't exactly wick down the panel lines so I kind of had to do it manually. I let it dry for 20 minutes, then took a mildly damp paper towel and tried to rub off the excess. It worked, but there's still a residue on the flat surfaces. Should it look like this? Will that disappear with general washes and/or dull cote when I finish? Just rub harder?

I tried mildy moistening a paper towel with the turpenoid, but that just pulled it out of the panel lines too.

I started with the bottom so as not to experiment on the upper half of the craft. If the top half comes out like this, I think I'm gonna be very unhappy. Please, all advice is welcome.

That right side bottom looks fine, the left side needs a damn good rubbing with a q tip and some solvent IMHO.
But, it really comes down to how much you want it weathered.

The amount of panel line you leave behind depends on a few factors:
*The colour of the mix and its viscosity
*The components in the mix...oils are best but take longer to dry
*the surface texture of the model....gloss gives less retention, matt will give more retention of the line colour
*How long you leave it on to let it dry and set
*How much you wipe off and how hard and if you use solvents while wiping say to remove stain on the actual panel

I do exactly the same as you with the future coats, though sometimes skip Future if I am really muddying up a build and want it to stay like say on a X-Wing. I try to apply and wick right into the line or seam and am super chicken about leaving it on to dry too long so usually take it off quickly. There is a bit of a learning curve, feel and comfort level gained by experience, knowing your paints and knowing your stains and how much you want.
I can count dozens of guys on here , myself included, who did just as you have, freaked out they wrecked the model with too much weathering but just need to wipe more or selectively use solvent to remove what they don't want.
Case in point my good friend John I would read about his great recovery
http://www.intscalemodeller.com/viewtop ... 8&start=40
I would keep going with what you are doing, maybe being careful top side to focus the panel line stain just into the lines and try to get it wicking to avoid the panels themselves.
Hope that was a bit helpful, I would be encouraged by where you already are if this is your first few builds
:cheers2:

Alright, I got this.

Smaller brush. Don't be sloppy, just hit the lines. Do it in sections. Rub it down minutes after applying.

Yeah, it was scotts calming and wise words that stopped what turned out to be a decent looking build turning into landfill ! It's never as bad as it first seems :thumb1:

It definitely helped. I enjoyed seeing your build thread. The finished kit looks great!

Like you, I don't mind showing my mistakes (and there's no shortage of them). The input from the board is what's helping me learn how to do this.

Thank you, i appreciate the kind comments :thumb1:

Although i"m a life long modeler it was allways car's and bikes. The phantom was only my 2nd or 3rd aircraft build as an adult and the weathering was totally new to me, but i agree, posting these mistakes can only help us improve.

I'm struggling to post a link to the next aircraft i did after the phantom with my phone but i do think it was a better finish than the phantom :thumb1:

This is a great pre mixed product for engines and such. They have oil and fuel stains as well.

Can you do an enamel wash over acrylic? I don't know much about such things.
